Best Goalie In State?

I know this is probably going to be shot down because of what team he plays for, there competition level, and his save %, but I honestly think that the goalie for Becker/Big lake is one of the best. Tonight he played incredible against Princeton. giving up 7 goals on 67 shots with the defense he had... amazing. Almost every shot was point blank and he wasn't letting anything by. The game was 3-0 going into the third with Princeton having 48 shots i think. It was the same way last year. He's a small kid, 5'8" but man can he move and play the angles.

i'd have to give it to lyon, didn't look like stilly's goalie fared to well against wbl last night, he's to big and slow

Cates is a good goalie if that's who you are referring to. He's not elite IMO like they are trying to make him out to be but he's damn solid. He probably had an off night.

I would take Andrew McDonough or Josh Erickson and a bunch of other guys over Cates.

alex lyon, the only goalie in the state to be on the nhl midterm rankings. he is the best goalie in the state

Agreed, of the goalies I have seen this year, Bitzer, Lindgren and Jeanetta top the list.

Here is my Top 10 Goalies this year with reasons why...

1.) Charlie Lindgren (Lakeville North)- Lindgren is a junior and has played power house schools andhe attends not the best high school hockey team but is able to help them pull of some big upset wins. He has really improved from last year. I wouldn't be suprised to see him in 5th or 6th round in the NHL draft as he is a '93.
2.) Alex Lyon (Lake of the Woods)- Lyon has played very well and seeing many shots each game but the shot qualities from the tough twin cities teams does not compare to the northern teams. He is a very good goalie and excellent technical wise. He has a bright future ahead of him.
3.) Jo Jo Jenneta (Duluth East)- Jenneta has been very good espacially in the Schwans cup and after losing future bulldog defenseman Andy Welenski. Jenneta has a very good style and is tough to beat down low.
4.) Michael Bitzer (Moorhead)- Bitzer has held his team in many games but has not been great all year. He could of pulled of the win vs Tonka and E.P. but didnt..he has brought his best in games vs Wayzata and if he did that every game then he would be in my top 3.
5.) Connor Girard (Edina)- Don't Let this .872 save % fool you. Girard led his team to the state tournement last year and is looking to do it again. Great Butterfly with very quick glove. I'm excited to see where he ends up after this year. My guess is somewhere out east after a year in the USHL. Hornets looking for a repeat state title this year.
6.) Andrew McIntyre (Wayzata)- Didn't start against rematch vs Moorhead Spuds and was a big mistake but he has had a solid year posting a .905 save % through 12 games. Im excited to see this battle between Lake Conference coming up this weekend. Didn't make the Eliete leauge but played well for the Minnesota Blades team. Its going to be a battle in the lake conference.
7.) Tim Shaunessy (Hill Murray)- Very Good movment and has come up big for the Pioneers leading them to the championship game in the Schwans gold division at the excel energy center over the holidays. Tim can steal any game and is very calm and a focused goalie. I think its no question that we will see the pioneers back at the excel in March.
8.) Andrew Ford (E.P.)- Ford is playing behind the state's Top defensive pair of Dan Molenaar and Nick Seeler. Ford has the potential to play past high school hockey and although he has a save % of .897 he has been solid for 2 years and he wants another state championship, watch out for this kid!
9.) Alex Glockner (Tonka)- Glockner has not been his best this year and entering the season he had the states leading save %. Easy to play behind 3 D1 recruits as a junior and then playing behing an unexpierence d core now must be though. Although he has a .875 save percent, Glockner seems to win most games he plays, he plays the puck with authority and controls the play. I wouldnt be suprised to see him and the skippers back at the excel if he can adjust his game a bit more.
10.) Ryan Coyne (Maple Grove)- Coyne has played very well after being in the Eliete leauge this year and he and the Crimson will be looking to be at the state tournement this year and compete with the states best. Coyne will have to turn it up again in the 2nd half of the season. We all know its not how you start the season..its how you end it. Maple Grove will be a tough team in the late season and Coyne will be tough to get by.

Honorable Mention- Bodhi Engum(Burnsville) Nick Malvin (Blaine) Blake Cates (Stillwater) Nick Lehr (Roseville)

Stumpf from Little Falls has led the state in save % for two or three weeks during the heart of the season (some time flip flopping between him and Jennetta) and ranks high in GAA. Held Hibbing to 1 goal despite Hibbing out shooting LF. Played well against Tech and Brainerd. Hibbing and Brainerd have some of the best lines and goal scorers in Class A. I know some will say others (AA teams) have toughter schedules, but I wonder if he should at least get an honorable mention......... Keep in mind he is only a sophomore........

i would say he's closer to 5'6". he's not one of the best in the state, but he's above average for sure and probably does get looked past because of the team he is on. He single-handedly keeps that team in games that they shouldn't be in

How can you put any goalie with a save pct. under .900 in the top 15? I guess if the team is ranked in the top 15. they must have a great goalie!!

He isnt playing the best teams in state though..if he is so good then why isnt he being considered into the Eliete Leauge? Or Participating in the Advanced Spring Festivals? He is good but not top 10 maybe he will be the best his senior year...not this year though.

Weird how on the hub they have 2 goalies listed under top prospects that have save % under .900%...its not all about save percent. Ford And Glockner both have potential to play D1 hockey. And im sure Bitzer is talking to the U of M but that would be a mistake to go there since they already have Wilcox.

I like the list and have seen several of the top 10 and agree. I have to wonder though about how some of them would do if the team they are skating for was not strong? I think that part of the evaluation has to be how much of their percentages are due to very good defensemen who are cutting off angles and greatly reducing the shots on goal vs the goalies who have pretty weak teams in front of them who are seeing a lot of shots and not getting much if any help with rebound control and etc. A goalie in the latter position might be a better goalie but since he is having to carry a team all the time his bad nights are flashing neon signs.

Just wondering.

LOW plays some good teams, but you have to look at the entire schedule. (Park Rapids, Bagley, Red Lake Falls, ect). Stumpf is only a sophomore and would not have been eligible for Elite league right? Seems like many of the outstate kids are two and three sport athletes. (Stumpf was the Little Falls keeper in soccer) If you look at Elite (West)and Advanced (Section 6) there is a clear preference for kids from the West Metro teams. West Metro kids have made teams even though they were not at the tryout.

A couple things about Bitzer,

started playing full time as a peewee,
moved up to high school instead of playing two years of bantams,
didn't lose as a freshman, 9-0
is a stud baseball player
nobody works harder and enjoys the position more than he does
He is raw and is athletic as you can get.

Good info. Moorhead moved a kid directly from PeeWees to high school varsity? Didn't anyone want to play goalie in Moorhead?

I'll back you on that. Did you see the game against Mora? I think everyone there will tell you that he single-handedly won that for them. Shots were like 42-15? Lots of great scoring chances too

I agree with this 100%. The best goalie around is the one who undergoes the constant stress of not having a steller defence in front of him who cut down the frequency of quality shots.
