It ain't right...

Post by Renegade Ram »

When I first saw this on the schedule I did a double take for sure. My initial reaction was much like some of yours, this game definitely doesn't benefit the Boys HS team in that IF they were to lose...they would be a laughing stock as some have suggested and IF they win...they've beaten females albiet World Class Olympians they are still girls. If your the Boys coaches how do you approach this. Do you play it hard to win or do you lay back not to injure any female all-stars and not compromise your country's chance at Olympic Gold. I also agree with goldy313 on the distance between the sexes as of yet in this sport. It is still greater than most think. Remember the BEST Women's hockey player in the world had a tough time making an Italian Elite league team and I'm unsure if she even lasted a full season. The girls may skate well and have great hands but I'm unsure if 5'4" - 5'11" females can stand up to 5'7" - 6'2" males that can play the game. Just the reach & strength difference in close quarters makes a huge difference. This is not even with actual grinding and body contact. I've seen WCHA female players play in Boys HS 4 on 4 leagues and they are usually in lower echelon of players just with Regular Joe HS players. I'm afraid this may have looked good on the surface to some people I'd have to disagree. Unless of course, this is when Gigi gets her try-out, then the whole thing makes perfect sense.

good idea

Post by warroadsalt »

I like the idea and i dont think either team deserves to be shamed at all by loosing, they are bridging a gap. so many of the comments about this subject sound so negative and ignorant. i bet it will be a fun game and it will sell out the warroad gardens, or whereever it might be played.

I think this is looked at as a challenge for the Women's team. I know this past summer the WhiteCaps (professional womens team) was at the International Cup scouting teams to play. That would be 90 and 91 age teams. I believe they expressed interest in playing the winning team in the 91 age group. The players are the same size as the women so it seems like it would be a good match up for them.

Warroadsalt I disagree completely with this game. This isn't a gap that should be bridged. Why doesn't the Professional Women's Football team from Minnesota play someone like Wayzata then - same theory - the women would get their butts kicked. While driving last night I brought this game up to my wife who is a WHS faculty member. She hadn't looked at the schedule that closely and they haven't started to hype it here yet. Anyway her first reaction was the same as mine; she felt this game shouldn't be played. It doesn't do anything for the prestige of the Warrior program, if they lose it could possibly hurt their confidence for the second half of the season. Think of the banners in EGF & TRF and especially Roseau (in fact those guys are having a field day with this already) - You guys got beat by girls HA, HA, HA...or You meanies beat up on girls. I understand that USA Hockey may be trying to rachet up the competition for the girls. But at who's expense? I also had a talk with a player I asked him how he will approach the game - he wasn't thrilled having to play it because if they are told to lay back how far do you back off. Lastly, elliot70 the bet is on...how about a twelver of frosty's at Main Street West after this one - Warroad wins this one going away IF they're not told to lay down.

No Bridge to Gap

Post by Puckguy »

I am not convinced that this has anything to do with USA Hockey, other than it presents an opportunity to continue a relationship established with Warroad, through Cal Marvin. No doubt the man did some great things on the hockey scene. Not many communities in the country have regularly hosted Olympic, National and International teams. But that was then ... With Cal gone, the NHL representing the USA on the international level, and the Lakers gone, the dynamics have changed.

Why not bring another, equally situated, team to Warroad to carry on the tradition. Might be a great draw for USA/Canada matchup. But to put an elite international team against a high school team seems to make it a lose/lose situation.

I took in some of the preliminary World games in Mpls. a few years ago. Other than Canada and the USA, the games were PeeWee level at best. Elite women vs. Elite Women (Canada v. USA) is fun to watch. Elite HS vs. Elite HS (Moorhead v. Warroad '05) is fun to watch. Why bridge a gap that doesn't need to be? The games are different!

Renegade - say hi to Mrs. Renegade.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Elliott, I know this may belong in the Section 8 thread but I had to chuckle when I saw your Section Final prediction. TRF & DL....I'll GIVE you the larger box of Frosty's if that's how it plays out, NO reciprecation(sp) needed if either doesn't appear as that is about the boldest prediction I've seen about Section 8 in recent years. Only you are getting those kind of odds. I am all for the Girls competing to become the best and do well in International competition. However, this game just has a flavor of "YUK"!
Is it felt the high school boys can tone down their game? Why couldn't the girls take on any of a number of minor hockey teams, giving them even better competition? Or is it they don't want to blemish their record? Or is it you could not put a "leash" on the minor leagues, yet expect the high school team to do so.
It is not fair to the Warriors to have to "hold back", when they too are trying to become the best at their game.

How about ACHA Men?

Post by Renegade Ram »

How about the college CLUB teams from Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Northern State, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, Kent State, Robert Morris you get the idea. The ACHA I believe it is. The one USA Hockey magazine writes about that gives guys & gals a chance to keep playing the best game on earth. A "serious" recreational league as you would. A game with a top ranked team may be closer than an well-practiced HS team and would give it a more "collegiate" feel. It would have a better feel in that if the guys won it could be said they were a "college" team and if the girls won the guys would be going for frosty's to laugh about it. They could tell their grandkids they played a US Olympic team. It's all about perception. crosscheck has best described this game so far...I agree; YUK!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... m>Renegade Ram at: 10/26/05 5:12 pm

You guys forget that most of the women on the U.S. team were the best players on their boys' high school teams when they were that age. I think its going to be a lot closer than you think.

Really? Which ones played Minnesota Boy's HS Hockey from 10th through 12th grade and were the top player on their HS team. You can't name one because none have. That may be the greatest NEWBIE post ever. Judges! Let's go further than that....Last season Warroad Boys won the lowly Class A tourney and Ms. Minnesota Hockey played for the Warrior Girl's; I GUARANTEE she wouldn't have made the Varsity. In fact, I think she would have had a tough time lasting the season on the JV without major injury. The gal is playing well for the Lady Gophs but really Women's Hockey a mediocre boys team would whip any WCHA team.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... m>Renegade Ram at: 10/26/05 5:48 pm

Game time

Post by jbuth31 »

The thing is, we aren't talking about the Warriors playing a WCHA team, they are playing the national team. Many of these girls train with mens teams during the off season. Wendell skates with her boyfriend and his buddies and I can guarantee you that all of those guys are better players than most on this board (unless of course you play pro). Angela Ruggerio is bigger than most of the high school boys and she will definately hold her own. She played last winter in a game in the CHL and she played regular shifts. Would she be able to do it an entire season? Maybe, maybe not. Don't discount these women just because they are females. These girls have grown up playing the game just like you have, just in a different facet. I may not post much but it doesn't mean I don't read this board on a regular basis.

Who was that?

Post by Renegade Ram »

I didn't see any names of women on the National team that played Minnesota Boy's HS hockey grades 10th thru 12th and were the best players on their respective Varsity team. Make a statement, then back it up. Don't try wiggle out and name one larger sized women's player from the roster and expect us to shiver. I haven't seen any of the big posters from the girl's side of the board weigh in on this and claim this will be a close game. Their smarter than that.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... m>Renegade Ram at: 10/26/05 6:15 pm

Most of the team isn't from MN. Of those that are, they are young enough to be able to have the option to play on a girl's high school team. Naturally they opted for that opportunity. The girls who played HS (triple AAA if you will) are from the coastal states. I'm sure if they were from MN they would have played on a girls' hs team. I just think it is ridiculous the people are taking such offense to an exhibition game. The results don't mean anything, its just a chance for a very good team to play another very good team. You don't hear people squaking when the U-17 national team is taking on a college team made up of 22 year olds. Its just a chance to gain some experience and play some new competition. I've seen Warroad play numerous times and I've seen the US team play. It should be an interesting competition. Are you a current Roseau player? I've probably seen you play too. I'm not a rook, I watch a lot of hockey and I understand what goes into the game and what it takes to be competitive. I tell you what, when January rolls around, you should hop in your car and make the trip to Warroad and at least check it out, hell... I'll pay for the tank of gas.

And I quote: "You don't hear people squaking when the U-17 national team is taking on a college team made up of 22 year olds." That his young MEN against young MEN. A COMPLETELY different scenario altogther. I have seen one of those U-18 vs the Gophs games at Mariucci it was a joke something like 8 - 1 or 3 for the Gophs and got really chippy late. The National team resorted to hack and chop because they couldn't keep up physically or speedwise. Would never go to see one again.
