Big Games and Your Predictions – Week 5

Last two of our five games to close out Tuesday evening:

Eden Prairie 4, Breck 0

After a scoreless first period Eden Prairie got on the board early in the second on a goal by Anna Johnson, and then put the game away with three more in the third. Lauren Boyle and Angie Heppelmann had multi-point games for the Eagles with two assists each. Alexa Dobchuk needed to make just 13 saves for the shutout, while at the other end Breck’s Jenna Brenneman stopped 47 of 51 shots to keep the score as close as it was.

Again, our panel did very well in picking the winner (31 of 33) but nobody predicted a shutout, let alone a 4-0 shutout.

Lakeville South 4, Achiever Academy 3

Unfortunately, game stats are not posted.

This is the one game tonight where our panel was pretty evenly split, with 18 of 33 predicting Lakeville South would come out on top…and unfortunately I was not in their camp...

(...oh well, I had my moment in the sun last week). Out of the 18 who did predict a Cougars win, there was just one - MIYY4U – who got the score right, and in so doing takes the early lead. Nice job, MIYY4U!

The score of the EP/Breck game was very nearly the 4 to 1 that many prognosticators predicted. In the second period Breck had a goal waved off for having too many players on the ice. To add insult to injury EP scored their first goal during the subsequent power play. Tough to recover from a big swing like that.

Another Tonka OT win. How many is that this year so far? They must like living dangerously or else still have a flair for the dramatic. On the negative side, they're being challenged much more this season and not winning as handily. On the positive side, they're still finding ways to win each game and they're developing the younger players who can hopefully help them during the playoffs. Plus, so much more balanced this season that any number of players might end up being the heroine in any given game.

Our first upset of the week:

Mounds View 3, Roseville 1

19th ranked Mounds View scored the first three goals of the game and went on to upend 11th-ranked Roseville 3-1 at the Roseville Skating Center. Mustang goals were scored by Emmy Michaelson, on a power play late in the 1st period, then by Sydney Brodt and Courtney Conlin at even strength in the 2nd. Maddie Schlossmacher finally got the Raiders on the board with just 3:20 left in the game.

Only 4 of 33 prognosticators believed Mounds View would win, with two of those four also predicting the 3-1 score. Congrats to mrleft and Knight7 on gaining two points on nearly the entire field!

Andover 0, Minnetonka 2

Presley Norby scored both of Minnetonka’s goals to lead the Skippers past the Huskies at the Pagel Activity Center. It was a 0-0 game until Norby scored her first goal with 4:13 left in the 2nd period. Hannah Ehresmann made 16 saves for the shutout while Andover’s Maddie Rooney’s 24 saves kept it close until the end.

With one exception everyone picked up a point, and there were two who added the bonus: FlyingWarrior and 36Guy! Great job in predicting Tonka’s low scoring, shutout victory.

Hopkins 5, Breck 1

Nina Rodgers led the way with a hat trick and two assists in Hopkins’ 5-1 win over the Breck Mustangs. Corbin Boyd had a four point night, with a goal and three assists, and Jillaine DeYoung scored the Royals’ other goal and added two assists. For the game Hopkins outshot Breck 37-21.

Another result where 32 of 33 added at least a point, but this time there were SIX with perfect scores! The lucky (?) ones were Nimrod, ERhockeydad, mnhockey3535, capitalpride, AAA Dad and Antagonist.

I’ll update the Leaderboard as soon as the Bloomington/Benilde game is posted.

In our final “Big Game” tonight it was:

Bloomington Jefferson/Kennedy 1, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 4

Kelly Pannek scored a pair of goals and assisted on BSM’s two others to lead her team to a 4-1 win over the Jaguars. Caitlin Reilly and Brittany Wheeler each had a goal and two assists while Kalli McCullen scored for Bloomington. For the game the Red Knights had a 44-18 shot advantage.

Yet another game when only one (parent?) thought the underdog team would spring the upset. And this time we set yet another record in the perfect score department with SEVEN! And FINALLY I can count myself as part of this prestigious group – YEAH!

Heading into Saturday’s big final day, with eight games on the calendar, MIYY4U maintains a narrow one point lead with 12 points:

A big final conclusion to Week 5, with eight games played today. The results of six of the eight games are in so far:

Eden Prairie 4, Buffalo 0
Showing a balanced attack Eden Prairie got goals from four different players in their 4-0 win over Buffalo. Whitney Padgett was perfect in net, stopping all of the 16 shots Buffalo was able to get on goal.

A solid majority – 28 of 33 – picked the Eagles to win, but nobody predicted the 4-0 score.

Thief River Falls 1, North Wright County 0
Brandi Malwitz’s power play goal with 3:26 remaining was enough for the No. 1AA Thief River Falls Prowlers to get past North Wright County at Monticello’s Moose Sheritt Arena. Prowlers’ goalie Frances Marshall needed to stop all 14 Riverhawks’ shots to secure the shutout win.

There were no correct scores but 28 of 33 picked TRF to win and add a point each.

Edina 1, Minnetonka 2
Minnetonka’s Annelise Rice scored the game winning goal at 11:00 of the third period as the No. 1 ranked Minnetonka Skippers prevailed over the Edina Hornets in a marquee matchup as part of the Lake Conference Girls Hockey Showcase held at the Plymouth Ice Center. Emma Bigham got Minnetonka on the board in the second period, but Taylor Williamson evened the score on an unassisted goal for the Hornets early in the third. Sydney Baldwin recorded two assists for Minnetonka. Shots on goal slightly favored Edina at 21-18.

Our panel was pretty evenly divided, with 16 giving the edge to Minnetonka, 14 to Edina while 3 said it would end in a tie. Somewhat surprising, nobody got the score right.

Hopkins 0, Wayzata 1
Kaitlyn Klein scored the game’s only goal with just under five minutes to play as No. 3AA Wayzata edged No. 2AA Hopkins in the final game of the Lake Conference Girls Hockey Showcase. Sarah Stelter stopped all 20 Hopkins shots to earn the shutout.

According to our group Wayzata’s win was a slight upset, as the majority (19 vs. 13 plus one tie) thought Hopkins would win. And once again: a very low scoring game with no correct scores.

Red Wing 2, Blake 5
In a battle of the top two ranked teams in Class A, No. 2 Blake upended No. 1 Red Wing 5-2 on their home ice in Hopkins. The Bears’ Carly Bullock led the way with two goals and an assist, while Jordan Chancellor and Sara McClanahan each scored a goal and one assist. For the game Blake outshot the Wingers 39-27. The loss was the second straight for Red Wing after starting the season with a 7-0 record.

A big upset according to our panel. Only 7 of 33 picked the Bears to win, and once again nobody got the score right.

Achiever Academy 2, Dodge County 5
No info on the scoring as game stats are not yet available.
A solid majority got this one right, with 23 picking Dodge County to win on their home ice in Kasson.

Hope to put up the final standings for the week as soon as the results of the Bloomington/Lakeville North and Breck/Hill-Murray games are posted.

Question: Can someone please get a score right in one of these last two games? So far today we've had 198 predictions but not a single correct score!

Breck 1, Hill-Murray 2 (OT)
No. 7AA Hill-Murray needed overtime to defeat a determined Breck Mustangs team 2-1 at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood. After Breck defender Claire Mancheski tied the game at 1-1 with just 23 seconds remaining, it was Jessica Bonfe who provided the heroics for the Pioneers, scoring the overtime game winner just 33 seconds in. Bonfe also scored Hill-Murray's first goal, staking them to a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the 2nd period. Both goaltenders had very good games: Jenna Brenneman stopped 39 of 41 for Breck while Leah Patrick only allowed one goal in the 21 Breck shots that she faced.

32 of 33 had Hill-Murray winning, and FINALLY someone – but only one – got the score right: Misterright called the 2-1win for the Pioneers. On behalf of the entire group, we thank you, Misterright, for ending an embarrassing shutout streak for all concerned!

Still no score in for the Bloomington/Lakeville North game. Anyone know how this one ended?

Since nobody predicted the two teams would tie, the point totals as posted last night do not change. Congratulations goes to ERhockeydad, our "Prognosticator of the Week" for Week 5!

For the record, the average predicted score (CW) for this final reported game was Lakeville North 3, Bloomington Jefferson/Kennedy 2. CW finished the week with 12 points, with one correct score (BSM 4, Bloomington 1).
