Virginia is not a top 20 team and Breck is otherwise same feelings as you

Thanks for getting the party started, y’all.

Finally we had some meaningful games between some of the highly ranked teams. Some of them lived up to the hype and help separate the wheat from the chef, while a few most certainly did not. The top of the rankings remain relatively stable, while the lower portion remains a revolving door. We continue to have a number of games postponed or canceled due to Covid, though one team notably returned from its hiatus.

Enjoy and stay safe, everyone.

1. Hermantown (8-0-0) [LW 1]
W 12-0 vs Virginia, W 6-1 vs Brainerd
The Hawks bombed yet another 7A team, and that section has already boiled down to a two horse race. Brainerd put up a fight for two periods, but Hermantown blew open the game in the final stanza. In the Plante watch, the sophomore added eight points and is now atop the state leaderboard with 33. Finally we hit the meat of the schedule, with the much anticipated East matchup, which took a global pandemic to finally come to fruition, and the first of two tussles with Rapids.
Next: Tue @ Duluth East, Thu vs Grand Rapids

2. Gentry Academy (6-0-0) [LW 2]
W 10-2 @ Holy Angels, W 8-1 @ Little Falls
The Stars continue to shine, and dismantled two of the better foes on their schedule in opposing fashions. Holy Angels was down 4-0 barely three minutes in, while Little Falls hung around for the first half of their contest before Gentry's talent overwhelmed them. I was hoping for some closer contests to better evaluate this team, but it wasn't to be. I was disappointed in their lack of discipline against LF, but the Flyers couldn't capitalize. The coming week features a section showdown and a trip to Blake, the most challenging regular season opponent.
Next: Tue vs Johnson, Sat @ Blake

3. Warroad (4-1-2) [LW 3]
L 2-3 vs EGF, T 2-2 vs GF Central
I tend to focus on body of work over individual game results; thus, the Warriors stay ahead of EGF despite the Green Wave victory. Warroad squeezed out ties against Central and Moorhead, both of whom defeated EGF. Still, the margin is razor thin, and Warroad has been trending in the wrong direction since the big Roseau win. Scoring has been way down, with only five goals in the last three contests. The Warriors catch a brief breather before facing the other Grand Forks power.
Next: Tue @ LotW, Fri @ GF Red River

4. East Grand Forks (3-5-0) [LW 5]
W 3-2 @ Warroad, L 1-2 (OT) vs Moorhead
The Green Wave experienced a roller coaster ride of a week. They erased a two-goal deficit to defeat their 8A rival, then surrendered a late game-tying tally to the Spuds, who took advantage of the new life early in the extra session. This team just feels like less than the sum of its parts: The top line has been good, but not dominant, and secondary scoring has been nearly nonexistent; goaltending has improved, but still is below average. EGF finally gets a relatively soft game before (hopefully) facing Roseau, who is experiencing Covid concerns.
Next: Tue @ TRF, Sat vs Roseau

5. Mahtomedi (4-3-0) [LW 4]
L 2-5 @ H-M, W 4-0 @ Breck
The Zephyrs kicked off the week in an uncharacteristic first period track meet with the Pioneers, which did not end well. Mahtomedi rebounded with a workmanlike win over Breck, tacking on an empty-netter for the final margin. Secondary scoring is a constant concern, with three players in double digits and no one else above five points. Mahtomedi continues their tour of 2A with surprisingly strong Orono and enigmatic Delano.
Next: Thu @ Orono, Sat vs Delano

6. Duluth Denfeld (1-0-1) [LW 8]
W 15-0 @ North Shore
The Hunters lit up North Shore Saturday, apparently taking out their frustrations after being sidelined for over three weeks. Statistics are essentially meaningless in a blowout like this, but four Hunters registered six points each, with Kade Shea netting a hat trick. Denfeld has a mild test against a down Cloquet squad before the heart of the schedule kicks in next week.
Next: Tue @ Cloquet, Thu @ Duluth Marshall

7. Orono (5-1-0) [LW 10]
W 8-5 @ Waconia, W 3-0 vs Hutchinson
A newcomer to the rankings last week, the Spartans proved they belong with wins in divergent fashions. Waconia was a wild affair, with the Spartans unable to pull away until late, while Hutch was a tight checking goaltending dual. I'm not sure they are the 7th best team in the state, but no one else really earned the spot. While Orono lacks prolific scorers, they make up for it with impressive depth and goalie play. Sophomore Brock Peyton has two shutouts in his first four starts (he had the night off against Waconia). Orono has a challenging week ahead with two ranked foes, including the team two spots above them in the rankings.
Next: Tue vs LDC, Thu vs Mahtomedi

8. Little Falls (5-1-1) [LW 6]
L 1-8 vs Gentry, W 3-2 @ Mound
Other teams' roller coaster weeks were just a kiddie version compared to the Flyers' experience. Little Falls rebounded from the Thursday night thrashing with a nice victory over Mound Westonka, which became a little too adventurous near the end. At this point I think it is safe to throw scores against Gentry out of the window, as their speed and physicality make teams look silly. The upcoming schedule is light, both in quantity and quality, and I imagine the Flyers will be happy to take advantage of a down Cathedral crew.
Next: Tue @ SCC

9. Fergus Falls (5-1-0) [LW 10]
W 5-4 (OT) vs St. Cloud
The Otters' offense continued to shred opponents, this time rallying them to a victory over a St. Cloud team that comfortably handled 6A compatriots Alex and Sartell. Given the Cardinals' recent flop, and the fact that Fergus' loss to them was the teams' opener, I'm giving FF the bump ahead of Alex. Isaac Johnson was the hero Thursday, potting the tying and winning goals. The Otters should coast through the next three games leading up to the rematch with Alexandria.
Next: Thu @ Willmar, Fri vs Detroit Lakes

10. Alexandria (4-2-1) [LW 7]
W 8-0 @ Willmar, L 3-5 vs Bemidji
Coming off of the Little Falls tie, Alex started the week soaring against their Cardinal brethren, but were cut to pieces by a middling Lumberjack crew. Bemidji put the Cards in an early hole from which they couldn't recover. Alexandria faces more AA competition this week, most notably a St. Cloud team who shut them out a few weeks ago.
Next: Tue @ St. Cloud, Thu @ Brainerd

11. Sartell-St. Stephen (2-3-0) [LW 11]
Idle
The last of our four-team 6A grouping, the Sabres have been sidelined in Covid protocol since their Jan. 26 meeting with Sauk Rapids. As of now, they are scheduled to travel to Bemidji Thursday, but we won’t hold our breath as to whether that goes off as planned.
Next: Thu @ Bemidji

12. Mankato East (6-1-0) [LW 15]
W 9-3 @ Rochester JM, W 4-0 vs Mankato West
The Cougars mauled both of their adversaries and are rounding into form as the team whom most expected to be a formidable force in southern MN. East has a prolific scorer in Liffrig, a dominant defensive pairing with Schreiber and Borchardt, and sophomore Riley Burnett has taken the reins in goal. By dispatching rival West, they have jumped into the driver's seat of 1A, and can further cement that status with a win over Dodge County this coming weekend.
Next: Tue vs Faribault, Sat vs Dodge County

13. Hutchinson (3-2-1) [LW 12]
T 3-3 vs LDC, L 0-3 @ Orono
The Tigers fought their rival to a draw Tuesday night in a hard-hitting contest that featured a wild stretch of scoring in the third. They were unable to solve Orono goaltender Peyton, but the Spartans needed an empty-netter to ice the game. The road ahead looks manageable prior to a nasty stretch of games.
Next: Tue @ Willmar, Fri @ New Prague

14. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (4-1-2) [LW 13]
T 3-3 @ Hutch, L 1-7 vs Delano
I am willing to give the Dragons a mulligan for the Delano loss. They were facing a motivated, talented team on the heels of a rivalry game in which they scrapped back from a late two-goal deficit to forge a tie. Besides, there isn't a plethora of worthy challengers kicking down the door to take this spot from LDC. There's only one game on the slate, but it's a doozy against red-hot Orono.
Next: Tue @ Orono

15. Dodge County (4-1-1) [LW 20]
W 6-4 vs Simley, W 9-1 vs Luverne
It was the Brody Lamb show this past week, as the vaunted junior racked up five goals and nine points in two rather easy wins for the Wildcats. Dodge County has now won four straight since the Maple Grove drubbing. This is likely the most important week of the Wildcats' regular season, with a somewhat spry Albert Lea crew on deck, followed by the much anticipated showdown with section favorite East.
Next: Tue vs Albert Lea, Sat @ Mankato East

16. Mankato West (6-1-0) [LW 16]
L 0-4 @ Mankato East, W 6-2 vs Red Wing
The Scarlet were whitewashed in their crosstown showdown, but took out their frustrations against lowly Red Wing. That leaves them treading water for now. We'll see how West comports themselves against the Big Nine's two best AA teams before making any sweeping judgments.
Next: Tue @ Owatonna, Fri vs Northfield

17. Tartan (4-3-1) [LW NR]
W 3-0 vs Hopkins, W 5-2 vs Eastview
The Titans return to the land of the ranked after comfortably dispatching two middling AA opponents. The Strecker twins have been leading the Titans' resurgence, contributing an identical 16 points. The losses have all been to difficult competition (Hastings, STA, and Gentry); speaking of which, a loaded Hill team is on deck.
Next: Tue vs H-M, Sat vs Chisago Lakes

18. Mound Westonka (3-3-2) [LW 17]
W 7-4 @ New Prague, L 2-3 vs Little Falls
Following a nice victory, the White Hawks fell to yet another ranked team. Mound Westonka has become the measuring stick for other teams, in part due to their schedule, which has been littered with ranked foes. They have a return date with a revived Delano team whom they defeated in the season opener in what seemed like a seismic upset at the time.
Next: Tue vs Delano , Sat @ North Branch

19. Delano (3-5-0) [LW NR]
L 3-4 @ Breck, W 7-1 @ LDC
The Tigers started the week with their fourth straight one-goal loss, and appeared to be dead and buried. Delano somehow rose from the grave and handed Litchfield a blowout loss in a complete, dominant performance. We will soon find out if the zombie Tigers really are back, as they now face their most challenging week of the regular season.
Next: Tue @ Mound, Sat @ Mahtomedi

20. St. Paul Johnson (2-2-0) [LW 14]
W 9-3 @ Minnehaha, L 1-4 vs Holy Angels
The Governors continue to tumble down the rankings after alternating blowout victories with baffling defeats. There is talent on the roster, and they did have a delayed start, which are the only real justifications for keeping Johnson around. The Govs now have the unenviable task of squaring off with Gentry, followed by a decent test against Minneapolis.
Next: Tue @ Gentry, Sat @ Minneapolis

Out: Armstrong/Cooper, Virginia

Others Considered: Monticello, Breck, Providence Academy, Minneapolis

Read the tweet again. It’s just the March game being moved up one day. Feb 9 and March 9 happen to both be Tuesdays :D

My main quibble with QRF is how it treats AA opponents essentially as automatically superior to their A counterparts. Mankato East is given a huge bump for beating up on the crummy Rochester teams, and SW Christian gets a boost for facing teams like Holy Angels and Hopkins, even if they loose. It just doesn’t work as well for rating Class A teams with mixed schedules.

Loren Nelson's Legacy Hockey Rankings (link)

These are obviously far superior to the clown show LPH rankings, though there are still a few nits to pick (Johnson at 12 and the 5A teams stand out). The number after the record is last week's rank.

1. Hermantown 8-0-0 1
2. Gentry Academy 6-0-0 4
3. Mahtomedi. 4-3-0 2
4. Warroad 4-1-2 3
5. East Grand Forks 3-5-0 5
6. Duluth Denfeld 1-0-1 6
7. Little Falls 5-1-1 7
8. Mankato East 6-1-0 10
9. Dodge County 4-1-1 11
10. Alexandria 4-2-1 8
11. Fergus Falls 5-1-0 16
12. St. Paul Johnson 2-2-0 9
13. Orono 5-1-0 14
14. Hutchinson 3-2-1 12
15. Delano 3-5-0 13
16. Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper 3-3-0 15
17. Breck 3-3-0 20
18. Monticello 4-2-1 17
19. Mound Westonka 3-3-2 18
20. Chisago Lakes 4-1-1 19

I'm going to say this right now, and I didn't think an entire thread needed to be created to say it. The Class A rankings feels like the right spot - If there is a state tournament, I can say with absolute certainty the winner will come out of either Section 4, 7, or 8. The other 5 sections are completely irrelevant when it comes to State matchups. Looking at the rankings, the top 6 teams are in one of those sections. And Gentry destroyed Little Falls, the team sitting at the 7 spot. Sure, you could say Little Falls might've played a bad game that day, but the competition in schedules doesn't even come close. Hermantown and Gentry are rolling through their schedules, Mahtomedi plays against AA schools regularly, and plays them tough, and the same could be said of Warroad and East Grand Forks. The distance between the top teams in Sections 4,7, and 8 and the other sections is just remarkable in my mind. Just thinking out loud!

You’re probably right, and that is one of the frustrating aspects of doing rankings this year - it’s pretty much a handful of dominant teams followed by quite a bit of mediocrity. Class A is usually top-heavy, but not to this extent. I have watched most Little Falls games this season, and they did not play poorly against Gentry. The Stars just wear down teams with their relentless speed, physicality, and depth. It’s a tough hill to climb against them, even for Mahtomedi I think.

The one team to keep an eye on outside of the top five is Delano. If the Tigers continue to play like they have recently, they have the talent to at least compete with the big boys.
