Yes, disabled kids are not welcome. See Star-Tribune Sunday section B.

I actually saw the story on tv last night. I almost puked! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil"> sorry things like that have a tendency to really set me off. Re: ouch
Its a sad story but ,if you know anything about Catholic schools, not a new one.

I went to Catholic schools. My kids go to Catholic schools. So, this is not a knock on them, just fact.

They dont have the facilities nor the personel to handle disabilities, physical or mental. They dont have the funding that the public schools do to develop those kinds of pograms.

Could they charge more for tuition and do a better job of fundraising to accomodate such needs? I dont know if the demand is there to make it worth while.

It has always been the case that if you have special needs, go to a public school that has the programs to accomodate those needs. It is not news that Catholic schools dont.

The facts that the article gives us are sketchy at best. I would think that the admission process could do a better job of recognizing these things. I also dont undrstand how the family wouldnt investigate the school to determine if it could accomodate their very unfortunate and special circumstances.

Re: ouch
The real question is....Why so much attention was paid to this by the TV and StarTrib?.......

Because Minnesota is a socialist state that abhors anything private. Why? Because private initiative threatens medocrity and their definition of fairness, which is nothing more than socialism.

I'm sure this won't be the end of this issue, especially when the hockey team wins another state championship this coming season.

Re: Ouch
Nick Coleman is a columnist, therefore he only tells one side of the story. It wasn't a news item, rather a column. Packerboy makes the other side quite clear, which Nick Coleman failed to mention any of. He has an agenda and uses the paper to make it. Should AHA have done a better job of screening the admission? Of course, but they erred there. Take them to task for that, not because their some elitist bunch or turn it into a voucher issue which Coleman is trying to do.

Re: ouch
I have now been able to read both pages of the article. It is really a pathetic piece of journalism.

Obviously, the school under estimated his needs and the parents over estimated the schools ability to handle the situation. Hopefully, something was learned by all and a more thorough job on both ends can be a goal of the future.

An article or column expressing that would be most appropriate.

But Colemen seems to be auditioning for 60 Minutes. It is such a piece of crap. "AHA doesnt care for people in wheelchairs" Right.

AHA people ought to take this hack and his left wing liberal newspaper to task.

I say bundle the last 5 posts and submit them as an article to the trib.. there was more insightfulness in those five posts than all of colmans "articles" this year!

Re: ouch
k so thats pretty bad that they rescended acceptence... but i go to aha... and we have 2 elevators... and it'd be pretty tough for a person in a wheel chair to get around the school... just thought id throw that in...

that article made it seem like aha has no respect for students with disabilities... i think its more of an issue of being able to provide a decent learning environment for a kid... and if u cant.. its good to acknowledge it

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ck2345>got puck 2345 at: 6/21/05 6:15 pm

ouch
I don't think I'd have a problem if they never accepted the kid, but they accepted him, then backed out on it. It sounds like they handled the whole situation poorly, without ever giving the kid a chance once they accepted him. I'm would think the parents would have transferred him out if they saw a problem once he was there.

AHA
I had to come out of retirement for the summer on this one. What a one-sided piece of crap by another liberal in this state (aka socialist). Holy Angels is not able to disclose all information about the issue; only a small sentence was given to their side of the story. And how does Coleman know what actually took place? How is he so quick to take the side of the family and take their word that they gave AHA all the information about their child's condition? One side is being portrayed here and Coleman's left minded brain is being shown (oh wait, that is just the star-tribune in general).
He portrays the image that Holy Angels is a nasty place run by nasty people, which is the furthest thing from the truth. The amount of service given back to the community by AHA students and leaders is second to none. I have never known any student, teacher, or leader at AHA to not look out for a students best interests. This is no different! This article is completly humorous, slanted, and poorly written. Liberals will do anything to knock the privitization of aspects of our society because mediocrity is thier aim for all.

My guess is that Lee or Mitch will move this thread to th e hockey cafe.

Re: AHA
Kodiak Chew, you guessed exactly right. I should have done that the minute I saw the thread pop up, knowing full well where it was destined to go. How else could it be? Just another polarizing issue, but I'm moving it because it has nothing to do with high school hockey.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Kodiak I totally agree with you. This is a totally unfair event that has tagged AHA with a "bad guy" rep from a one sided argument. AHA is three story building not able to accept disabled children, such as the kid in this example, AT this current time. However they have had kids in wheelchairs (due to injury) that have been able to maneuver around alright. But as I thought about it, this situation is different. In the event of an emergency, this child would not be able escape on his own because of his specific disabilty... putting someone else's life in danger. In the other cases (injuries), the kids would be able to get out on their own if the situation came up. Because AHA does not have public funding it is unfair to charge the other children with the cost of providing a full time staff member to watch this kid. However if the family provided it I think it would be alright to let him in..... I could go on forever.

Re: kodiakchew
If I am not mistaken, I am sure there are some schools in Minneapolis or St. Paul that can't accept handicapped kids and instead have them attend another school in the system. Please correct me if I am wrong
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

I go to AHA and i know some people who went to school with this kid at St. Johns. They said he couldnt even go to the bathroom by himself, and had to have teachers help him. There's also a lot of stuff AHA couldnt say due to "privacy laws" which means Colemans anti-catholic liberal mind got to fabricate a one sided story while AHA couldnt fight back. But I guess people can use this as another excuse to hate us .

Oh by the way, in the words of Michael Savage, LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER. Great book, I highly suggest you guys read it (liberal or conservative).

public schools and disabilities
ER, I dont know if thats right or not but it makes sense.

I know from personel experience that kids at Catholic grade schools will get on a bus to the closest public school in the middle of the day to attend classes for such things as speech impediment or other learning disabilities.

But please dont tell Coleman that,... he'll do an article on how Catholics dont like kids that stutter

goldy, garrison, the prairie home man, should have kicked coleman's ass when he had the chance...and not just on paper! coleman did not have a hidden agenda to go after aha because they won state...he is in fact an avid hockey dad and plays on a mens league in the metro.

NP, I hope you are not defending this guy.

His motivation is one thing and one thing only......sell newspapers.

If slanting a story to theme of " Hypocritical Catholic schools kick handicap kids" will sell a newspaper, he'll do it.

Its as simple as that.

packer, colemans comments are abysmal...and i would not consider defending this knucklehead. just thought that before we string him up by his skate-laces it should be brought out that he's a hockey guy...to what extent i don't pretend to know. my last point, being a hockey guy, does not preclude him from putting his liberal foot in his mouth...which is exactly what he did.
