Something ex-coaches @ Monti did not quite understand!!!

Stripes,

Never played Monticello so I cant personally speak about the program. What was wrong with the coach? Have they had problems with other coaches or just this one?

stripes hit it right on the head. alot of things happened on and off (mostly off) the ice that got the coach in hot water. unfortunate for denardo but there are consequences for the things that happened. he had this program headed in the right direction. (even though there record didnt reflect it this year but the feeder program as gotten better) it should be interesting who they hire. monticello is still a basketball town even with the new arena so i'm not sure its a job that is worth taking. hockey as always taken a back seat in town. just my 2 cents

Starshockey-

Any names out there being considered for the coaching vacancy up there?

I am also in a community where hockey isn't the strongest sport. Known for football out here. We actually aren't a hockey town or a basketball town.

i havent heard of any names. i know the jv coach from this year also works in the school and took the varsity golf job so he would prolly be the top canidate at this point if he would want it. they will prolly look for someone that is in the school that would want to take the job unlike denardo who didnt work for the school district. should be interesting

Are the majority of this year's bantams sticking around or will kids leave, like the Torrel kid did?

torrel left after his junior year. he's got a younger brother that will be a ninth grader next year and is prolly moving up to varsity. i havent heard of any bantams leaving. they have a good group moving up that did pretty well this year at the bantam A level.

Heard of two assistants in Section 8AA that may be intrigued by the opportunity. 8)

Torrel kid? Someone left early from Monticello. Wow. No dedication to the program, huh? Kida that leave early have no idea what they are doing to themselves unless they have taken care of business at the high school level.

Assistants from 8AA...Roseau Assistant and Moorhead Assistant...Not sure any other teams have qualifications for the job.

We actually thought we had a good program out here. Sad enough we had a chance of going to state this year and couldn't capitalize on our opportunities.

Nothing known at this point. The word is that the coach was told by Tech administration to separate himself from the effort by a small group of Tech parents to bring down SCYHA and form their own youth hockey association. He was also told by the Tech administration to remove the name St. Cloud Tech from the proposed new association, but that hasn't been done yet--refer to sctyha.com for evidence. The Tech effort, though, is going absolutely nowhere. Pretty arrogant group if you ask me.

I don't get the arrogant part. From what I've heard, the Tech effort is to get a feeder program in line with their high school program. Not exactly a novel idea, with most of the programs in the State being community-based. It appears that the coach wants to be active in building his program from the grassroots. Again, what a surprising concept. It appears the only school that would have difficulty with this idea is Cathedral, and they are free to enroll students from wherever anyway. Too bad the Administration felt the need to get involved. St. Cloud Tech needs to do something to rejuvenate that program. 8)

Not sure what qualifications you would expect, but with the program's consistent struggles I would guess others also are qualified. I would think a good, young coach willing to get really involved in the community might be the best alternative. That said, even such a coach is going to need 3-5 years to make his mark on the program. 8)

Looks like Tech is free to enroll students from wherever as well. The self-annoited president of the soon-to-be failed St. Cloud Tech Youth Hockey Association had his kid transfer to Tech from the north side (Apollo) for school and hockey.

Two things: 1) It's clear that the Cathedral kids would suffer as the kids who live on the south side would have to play under Tech's banner, and they are going to put anyone from Cathedral under the bus.

2) They (Tech group) are willing to destroy the rest of St. Cloud's hockey program for their own little corner of the world.

Tech has controlled the program for several years, until the association ran Donovan out of the presidency and she lost thepower that was wielded with Hommerding. That is the reason this split is being proposed. It's a sad day for St. Cloud youth hockey regardless of the outcome, as wounds will be opened that will take a long time to heal.

Thanks for the updates!! Been chasing hockey around and haven't been watching as close as usual.

That is exactly what I was thinking, B&G.

SCTYHA has their own website that has a Q & A. One BIG question that goes unanswered on their site stems directly from what B&G just said.

Why wasn't this done in the past several years* when Colleen Donovan was the president?

*I don't know exactly how long Donovan was president (it sure feels great to say was). She was President in 99-00, I believe. So, in the eight plus years she was president, there were not a mention on this SCTYHA. As soon as she's out, it's uproar in the south.

Smells fishy to me.

Yourr kidding me the split will strenght St.Cloud Hockey and all 3 programs.

No one cares how good or how many State Tournaments a Bantam team gets to, you should be worried about more kids playing the sport, short term gain is not the answer, every program that has youth teams that represent HS's make hockey stronger and more kids opportunities.

St.Cloud has struggled at the HS level in AA for years and years because of the being short sided. Wake up two youth programs more kids, more athletes how can anyone lose.

Good for Hommerding for stepping up instead of stepping away.

Nope... I've lived with the program for YEARS, and this split will pretty much destroy hockey for this town. Tech might stay OK, but the girls will fall away, and the costs will climb to the point where few will be able to afford to play. You can mark my words, if this split happens hockey in St. Cloud will suffer across the board. Hommerding is so short sighted that he doesn't care about the rest of the players. SAD.

I'm hoping that someone will use their heads on this and kill the proposal, but it's not in my hands so if Hommerding wants to destroy hockey in St. Cloud, we'll all remember him for it down the road.

must be St.Cloud Cath. parent or coach thus Blue and Gold.

No Chad isn't he is concerned as all should be about all kids not just Cath, Apollo or Tech.

Again don't be short sighted more kids, more parents, more money.

It is sad you can't see long term gain, again that is what happens when to close to situation.

Look at Osseo, Maple Grove more players and two good programs. Anoka, Champlin, and Andover. Coon Rapids, Blaine all have own youth programs same district.

Moundsveiw and Irondale.

Wake up we need more kids playing this game. Expand the game.

And i know in those 20 years he's had some very good youth talent he's sqandered. He quit having anything to do with the youth when his kid was done. Something that plagues other communities as well. Coaches getting involved just to make sure their kid plays. I've heard the hockey program is in a world of hurt down there. Has anyone else heard that?

And just where are "more kids" coming from? Take a look at the SCYHA site and read the reports. The numbers are down, and expected to continue in that trend. The costs are going up, and it's proven that the support dollars are not going to be doubled to support two associations.

If there were kids just waiting to play, and if splitting this association would give more kids a chance, I would be the first to back it. I think it's a great idea, that is 10 years too late and would now kill the opportunity for more kids that it will create.

Look, if the Tech folks want to kill hockey for everyone but their group, knock themselves out. I've left the association to those who care more than I do. The past president and the Tech coach created SCTHA association within SCYHA, but were booted out when it became clear that their only agenda was to one school.

If you can find me "more kids", then this is a great thing. If kids have to quit playing, then this is a terrible, close-minded plan set about by a few misquided people who can't see beyond their noses.

Oh, and in the minutes of a meeting with SCYHA and Chad, he stated that all he cared about was Tech, nothing more.

Take a little time to research, don't just blindly follow Chad/Colleen into the deep chasm.. http://www.stcloudhockey.com

Right on, B & G.

Also, a formal independent survey of SCYHA households was recently completed about the proposed split being brought forward by the small Tech parent group, and an astounding 56% of households responded with 93% voting against a split. See www.stcloudhockey.com for survey results.

Surprising? Not at all. Afterall, SCYHA is about the kids, not Tech H.S. Hockey.

A high school coach has 3-4 years to work with players. If there's enough raw player talent, a good coach should be able to mold a successful team in that period of time.
