I wouldn't say their is hatred in this rivalry but definitely some unfriendly competition. Especially East and Cloquet.
If this would have been asked a week ago, I would definately have said East/Cloquet. But after a very classy move by East on Wednesday, I am not sure how strong this rivarly will be in the upcoming years. Some East hockey players/students came to the cloquet hockey sendoff and wished the team good luck at state. Granted a rivarly never dies out completely, this could take some heat off the fire.

I think it was more recent actually...I should get to one of those games. As for rivalries, I don't know about ferocity but StC Tech and Apollo is well attended. I've heard big stories from Virginia-Eveleth as well

Its the most classy and best rival in the state
I agree with 97. I was in Warroad 5-6 years ago and was blown away. There were easily 1,000 people there for the start of the JV game.
They introduced Roseau's varsity and the there was a very polite golf clap from the locals. I thought they'd be throwing batteries at the Rams. A contingent was there from the Minnesota Wild, including Roseau's Neal Broten; and they cheered for all of them. I heard him say later in a local bar, that he was afraid he was going get booed. The game was a physical, well played tie game.
I've reffed high school games for years and this was, by far, the best display of sportsmanship I've ever seen in a hockey rink.
Makes the brats you'll see tonight at the X seem even a little more immature and spoiled.
Go Rams

That shows sportsmanship. There is nothing wrong with sportsmanship in a rivalry, especially off the ice. This took nothing out of the fire. If anything- it gives East more of a chip on their shoulder to bring the heat next year.

This isn't the only classy thing happening in this rivalry. On Monday, about 50 East kids (including me and several hockey players) went to a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in Cloquet for a kid there who needed a liver transplant. We were treated with the utmost class, and my food was served by the Cloquet fan some may remember from the front row of their student section.
Just because we're nice to each other doesn't take a thing away from the rivalry. There will still be several thousand people screaming across the ice at each other when they meet next year. I think the incident in the DECC parking lot earlier this year prompted both schools to crack down a bit...fans at the section playoff game might have noticed the lack of racist/class-based slurs that are generally used all game long. That didn't stop it from being the most intense game between these two since 2005, which is saying something considering the games East and Cloquet have played over the last 2 years. I doubt this rivalry will ever go away.

1. Warroad/Roseau
2. WBL/HM
3. STA/CDH
Warroad/Roseau is by far the top rivalry in hockey. WBL/HM is next in the metro. St Thomas hasn't always been good at hockey, but the rivalry has been going on for longer than 100 years and with both teams being good now they have to start selling tickets way in advance and sell out when they play.
I agree, only I would make #3. St.Cloud Tech/Cathedral and STA/CDH #2.

Warroad vs. Roseau is the obvious choice.
WB vs. Hill is probably the best metro rivalry but seeing that Hill is more of an area then a town, this rivalry doesn't count in this topic. WB vs. Roseville's another good one though

Always fun to watch in sections.
The two teams rarely play in high school, but Edina-WB is always a heated game in Bantam and PeeWee tourneys.

Farm animals on the ice? Give me a break. I bet the quality of hockey was un-matched. Stick to football and leave the hockey playing up to the big kids.
