Burnsville 2-0 over EP. Well played game by both defensively. Goalies both played well and teams were evenly matched. EP Power play could have made a difference but looked a little frazzled.

Hopkins-4
New Prague-1

New Prague played the first period with 8 skaters, the second and third with 9 skaters. Hopkins is too a good a team to be beaten by a team missing too many players and they took it to the Trojans in the first period and jumped to a 3-1 lead. But the Royals drew too many penalties and played short handed for most of the second and third period. That forced the Royals to rely on their defense. It would be interesting to see these teams play when NP is fully manned.

Burnsville-2
Eden Prairie-0

This was a good game between two good teams. Eden Prairie had their chances and couldn’t quite get their stick on the puck when it mattered. Burnsville shifted their top players keeping one out on the ice until their top player drew a 2+10 penalty. With the Blaze player in the box and the score 1-0, the Eagles really put the pressure on the Burnsville goal but still couldn’t get the right bounce of the puck during the 10 minutes the Burnsville player was in the penalty box.

The officials goofed. The Blaze player was supposed to spend 12 minutes in the penalty box (unless there has been a rule change). His early return to the ice sparked a new Blaze surge in their play and they added a second goal late in the third to put the game away.

Wow, declining numbers in Apple Valley may have finally caught up. Only 2 bantam teams this year, 3 PeeWee and only 3 Squirt teams. Most top metro associations now have over 10 Squirt teams, 6-7 PeeWee teams and 4-5 bantam teams. they've done a good job of keeping their top players playing at a high level but eventually dwindling numbers take a bite out of past success.

Kennedy only has 2 PeeWee teams so congrats to Kennedy.

Eastview has been around long enough that at some point the school district thought another high school is needed, thus two associations were shortly formed.
Eastview is a growning community, not sure why they are not producing better results. AV is not growing and like many other older communities will need to find creative ways to find growth. I remember when Burnsville was nothing but developments, we didn't need to recruit players. Now we still benefit from the young community in Savage.

Perhaps AV and Eastview will someday merge together and form one association.

The string of nice days continued and on Thursday night, Rosemount traveled to Plymouth to play Wayzata at the PIC. Final score:

In a fast, well skated, physical game; Wayzata needed a late third period goal to beat the Irish breaking a 1-1 tie. The Trojans came out fast, but could not quite put the puck away until well into the second period. That goal took some wind out of the Irish. The Irish had managed to kill a number of penalties until a Wayzata forward blistered a high shot from the right face off circle past the goalie.

Perhaps it was the overcoming of being at the PIC, but shortly after that goal, the Irish turned the pressure around and for the rest of the game, the Trojans were backed up in their zone with only an occasional foray up the ice. Trojans penalties helped, but the Irish were the stronger team at the end of the game as they “de-pucked” the slicker Trojan forwards on their charges up the rink.

Back in the 2004-2005 season, the Irish put together a core of good players and made it to the regional tourney. But since then the association’s peewee A teams had struggled playing under .500. This year, the Association has brought another core of good players together and may have turned their program. In those years after the 04-05 season, the association had difficulty fielding competitive teams at all peewee levels because of a lack of numbers and being forced to rely on C-level play to develop players to sustain the peewee A program. This happens to associations that use a "rifle bullet" development approach. Personal politics entered into that scenario also.

This year maybe the year that Rosemount establishes itself at the peewee level as a strong D8 program. Their numbers at the peewee level are up. They will skate five peewee teams (including two B1 teams) this year. Their B1 teams are off to a good start. They have the advantage of a second sheet of year round ice. And with a successful peewee A team, they could draw even more numbers next year. It looks like they may have gotten away from the “rifle bullet” approach to player development where the association focuses solely on a good group of players and lose numbers. Time will tell.

But for now, the Irish look tough and D8 looks tougher as a league.

Great game to watch, game was 1-1 with 2:30 minutes remaining when Hopkins took a penalty. MG scored about a minute later on the PP for the game winner and added a open netter after that. Hopkins showed they are a contender this year in D3. Very physical game with numerous injuries. Great goaltending as well.
