Apollo has been playing great hockey leading up to the playoffs, playing both Little Falls (5-3 loss) and Sartell (4-2) loss just prior to playoffs, after tonight this should prove that the Eagles are a team to watch out for, 6A is gonna be great!

A few weeks back I posted the note "has anyone else noticed that Sartell is starting to play really good hockey?". They got scoring from all three lines last night. Shut out Northern lakes and played penalty free hockey. If they can keep that up, take care of business against Willmar Saturday and pressure the heck out of Willmar's D and goalie they will come out on top. As we can all see from last night's upsets...Defense and goaltending will win you games in playoffs...Always been like that and always will. Keys at this time of the year are special teams and defense. The MAC will be absolutely packed this weekend which really makes a fun atmosphere for these kids and fans. Godd luck to all. Only one gets to skate at the X but all the kids will carry the semis and finals in their memories the rest of their lives! Love this time of yr!

Apollo had a historical upset last night, congrats.
Another note:
Last night marked the first time that Fergus Falls has not made it to the class A section semi-finals. Before their double overtime loss to Alexandria in the quarter finals, Fergus Falls has won at least one game in the section tournement every year since at least 1995-96 which was their first season in class A. Somehow the Otters secured the #4 seed, if they had not, it also would've been that long since they didn't host their quarter final game. Man how this section has grown up.
It was also the final Varsity game at the West Ottertail County Fairgrounds Ice Arena.

Results from Saturday nights semi-final games...
Alexandria defeats Apollo 4-0 to end the Cinderella story, I was pulling for Apollo to make it to state to really make their story something special.
Willmar upsets Sartell 3-2.
Neither the 1 or 2 seed make it to the final, its kind of nice to see some new teams make a run at the final and get a chance to make it so state, shows some parity in 6A.
Updated bracket....

Was at the Sartell-Willmar game. I have never seen the MAC that packed! That Willmar goalie sure is something special. Without him coming to Willmar as a foreign exchange student we'd be looking at a Sartell-Alex final again because he is the reason Willmar is moving on. Made a couple unbelievable saves, mixed with a shaky performance early from Sartell's goalie, led to the Willmar victory. I'm guessing Willmar will be representing this section at the state tourney. Goodluck to them in the finals!

The Willmar goalie is from Finland I believe, he looked very comfortable in nets also and wasn't at all rattled by the chance they had to advance to the finals.

Bardown I would have to agree with you, they looked great last night and IMO should make it to the X.

Would have loved to see the eagles continue their story. Just didnt have the fight they did against Little Falls. Congrats to Willmar and Alex on making it to the final. It was a fun season in 6a.

I agree with you Deuce, a lot of people would have liked to see Apollo make it to the section final cause anything can happen there.

Section Final is tonight at the Mac at 7pm. Its a battle of the Cardinals with a trip to state on the line, should be a great game, my prediction is 4-1 Willmar.

It was a great game wit some good flow to it, I thought Alex controlled play better than Willmar but Willmar definitely had chances. Alex came ready to play and had more in the tank where as Willmar looked tired towards the end when Alex really started to take control. Great game in general though.

A team with a losing record representing 6a. Probably doesn't happen very often. Good luck Alex!

They may have a losing record but they are 3-0 in the playoffs and thats really all that matters right??!!
No way would I have bet on our Cards making it to the X this year again but here they go. All you can do is win the games put in front of you and they did that.
Now lets hope that the student section can 'act like they've been there before' at the X. We lost worse in the stands than we did on the ice to Mahtomedi last year! lol

Alex was the most consistent team in the playoffs. They hit their streak at the ride time and got some very solid goal tending in the playoffs which carried them a long way. Its definitely something else to see a 5 seed in the state tourny.

Does Alexandria still have the fella that slipped

on the Blue line on introductions last year?
If so,
DO A POWER SLID THIS YEAR for fun?

Yes they still have him. He is #22 and is also an assistant captain.

Hopefully he can stay on his feet this time. I bet the poor guy didn't realize people would remember it a year later. And I hope the score of their game on Wednesday isn't more embarassing than the fall.

It made ESPN as a Not Top 10 play. so he can tell his wife and kids years down the road that he was on ESPN for a moment.
