Again Joe you show that you're the hardest working guy on the forum. Thank you!

And also thank you for never getting negative and keeping in mind that we are adults discussing kids playing a game. We all have to step back sometimes and remind ourselves that hockey is not life and death, eh? You always come in on the positive side of the discussion and you should be commended for that.

Melvin sorry for the confusion...yes I just listed school and actual section - probably would have others say no she isn't from secion 8 she is from sec 4.......

Morgan Johnson is a great story wasn't kept on the Section 4 team as there were a lot of very good forwards but like about 4 other forwards in Section 4 was assigned to other Sections that were short. Hats off to her in not getting down but rather going out and showing her best game to the evaluators in Phase II and getting a chance to show more in Phase III. It probably shows again that talent is recognized but sometimes it is in the eye of the evaluator and there can be differences in opinions and certainly players compete differently in a tryout like Phase I (skill and scrimmages) versus the game situations offered in Phase II.

Good luck to all - should be great hockey.

So Phase III started last night in Plymouth for the U16 and U17 with fast paced practices that were scored by evaluators - lots of flow drills and small games - pace was very good and there is a lot of hockey talent competing. It is interesting to walk from the U16 practices to the U17 - one year does make a ton of difference in regards to strength and speed!

There are 54 girls trying out at U17 they were told by their coaches 4 D out of 18 D and 5 F out of 30 trying out and 1 G out of 6 will be selected to National Camp at U17 this is down from last year when MN sent 5 D (+ 1 At Large D named later) and 8 F (+ 2 At Large F named later) and 1 G. This is a talented class, from this group 7 D, 12 F and 1 G went to National Camp last year at the U16.

Ben Smith from USA Hockey and the past Olympic Coach was at the Arena last night and was watching and scoring the practices in his ever present notebook - he was not a part of the MN Evaluation but he was taking notes.

Here is the schedule of games (no four hour rule in effect here so quick recovery will be required especially with the games on Rink A the large Olympic Sheet):

Saturday, April 18, 2009-Scrimmages
Red vs White 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM Rink C

Any one catch the final game today U16 - U17 Game?

I don't know if anyone has predictions at the U16 or U17 for who looked good - I thought play was very good but narrow range.

I only watched the White U16 this morning versus Blue U17 but thought Marvin, Sylvestor and Kuehl all looked very good as forwards.

I heard selection results could be out as soon as mid-week?

The last U16- U17 game the U17 won but the score did not define the game. For the most part I thought the U16 team looked like they dominated most of the game.

I would have to disagree about the last game. At the beginning, the game was pretty even. But, the 17's were stronger and only towards the end the 16's came on strong. The last 5 minutes of the game the 17's controlled the puck and the game. The 16's had one strong offensive line that seemed to play very well.

Whoa the same old comments for the same old group. The 16 Red totally dominated the tournament. You could take all but one line of forwards and D and call good to represent MN. At most one of the above should make the next level based on the Phases gone bye. It will be a tough decision for the evaluators to go "outside the box" and make the right decision on players. Attitude, Athletisism, Grades, Hockey Sense, Locker Room Presence, Coach Ability, and Size are the determining factors to make it to the next level - enough said...i love this sport - the "Greatest Game" of them all!!!!!!!!!

You have to take some parents for what the are, they moved there daughter to 3 different schools to find someplace where the sucking up will do the most good, they shamelessly push the same group of girls everywhere they go, whatever their kid is in is the best program ever, and no one except those from the chosen group will ever be good enough. When their kid graduates these pillers of the hockey communitty mysteriously dissapear. My daughter is going into 9th grade and was all set to go to Hill Murray until we spoke with the coach. I have never met someone who placed such High importance on sucking up as this clown and I can now see why Joe Hockey feels it's so necessary!!!!

From the College Board Thread:USA Hockey District Selections / National Camps 2009 http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?t=83950

It's my understanding that USAH has changed the U16 and U17 selection process for goalies this year. Historically, the districts have had a fixed number of slots (like F&D do) for goalies. This year the districts will send in their evaluations for goalies to USAH and they will choose the goalies based on some national rank criteria. Goalies will be notified in June when all district camps have concluded. U14 & U15 goalie selection will remain at the district level.

Does anyone have any other insight to this process?

Not sure if this was discussed this weekend at Phase III if so could be good for MN goalies!

I found the same info on USCHO thread and came here looking for clarification. Was there any info given to goalies/parents regarding this "delay" in Plymouth?

From a parent who had a goalie playing at Plymouth this weekend:

The goalies were told that the evaluators would 'recommend' as many as two goalies to USAH for the national camp. At that point it would be up to USAH to select one, two (maybe even none?) for the national camp -- out of the pool of goalies from the other districts.

So last year at U17 they took 5 D and 8 F and 1 D and 2 F were added At Large.

This year the number was announced at 4 D and 5 F for U17. When I asked a few people in the know they said this was to shift more "At Large" selections to USA Hockey and take some of the decision process out of the local Districts. In one way this may help the number of girls picked from MN but since MN doesn't send girls to the U14 Camp nor do MN girls get to compete in the National Tournaments (Shattuck represents MN at U16 and plays the MN Thoroughbreds to see who represents MN at Nationals) USA Hockey will know more and possible favor more heavily girls outside of MN. Time will tell?

Am I the only one who thinks this is not such a good idea?

How would USA Hockey personnel be better educated, aware, informed or more knowledgeable than any local district officials on the merits and abilities of players with potential for an at large selection?

The potential for hurting players in the Minnesota district is greater than the potential for helping them IMO.

I feel the local district personnel should make those judgements and selections...with USA Hockey staff then making their evaluations later on...down the line in the process.

There are a lot of things that I do not care for in the system, but unfortunately it does not seem much different than the MN people choosing who they are comfortable with.
