Watch out for Mayo the rest of the year. Weak effort put Albert Lea up 5-0 after 2 on saturday, but in the third period, Mayo came out pumped and dominated the period, holding Albert Lea to 3 or 4 shots. If Mayo can play that same way for 51 minutes, they will be a tough team to beat

...if, woulda, coulda, shoulda...yeah yeah DallasStars...we will believe it when we see it! Maybe you and your team should get your act together and work hard for an entire game huh?

Nodak Sioux you may end up right on this one. Mayo needs to find some urgency soon or they will end up in the cellar. They did show signs the first week against Red Wing and Champlin Park that they could compete pretty well. I went to the game against Albert Lea and Mayo didn't even show up to play. From the drop of the puck through the second period they played without any heart. Now in looking at JM and Albert Lea the talent level isn't that much of a difference it's simply who comes to play and works there but off. Mayo decided to do this in the 3rd period (and they controlled the entire period) but it was obviousley iway to late after giving up 5 goals in the first 2. Until Mayo can show they can play 3 periods it will be a long season. If they can find enough energy to play 3 periods they will compete fine in most big 9 games. But Saturday was a horrible display of hockey on the part of Mayo.

Big Nine

Does it really matter? Century will win the Big Nine and play one of the Lakeville schools to go to the AA State Tourney. Faribault will finish second in the Big Nine and go to State in Class A. The rest of the Big Nine is just OK with the exception of Austin which is just flat out bad.

So are we thinkin the bettle for the cellar in the Big 9 could be Mayo/Austin? are could mayo pick it up maybe after the holidays and get better?

No matter how bad Mayo is, they will not finish worst than Austin.

In the midst of all this talk of Faribault and Mayo, I would just like to add that Mankato East has shown tons of improvement this year and though they may not finish number one, i think theywill continue to have a strong season.

We will see how good east is when they meet Mayo this week.
Mayo is hungry and will win this one easy 5-1

Fair enough. However, i think if East puts out all of their effort, it will be closer than that. We'll see what happens

im calling east over mayo 2-1 in a close one.

and as far as Century taking the section and going to state there is still discussion as to who of the top 3 or 4 teams in the conference will take the title. Winona and Faribault are just as capable as Century is and it just comes down to who shows up night in and night out.

Just for some perspective:

Last year it was 8-1 Mayo.
For Mayo:
Goals by Weber (2) - Graduated
Buskey (2) - Graduated
Alexander (2) - Graduated
Goslee (1) - Graduated
Fischer (1) - Graduated

Assists by Weber (2) - Graduated
Whitney (2) - Graduated
Alexander (1) - Graduated
Nigbur, Powers, Flott & Heroff - Back

Goalie Yaggy - Graduated

Mankato: 8 of top 9 forwards, 2 defensemen, both goalies - Back
plus 1 Sr transfer who starts on D and 1 injured starter - Back.

Pretty close to the entire East team from last year plus 2 additions to replace those few who graduated. In 01 Mayo beat East @ Rochester 10-1. The following year East beat Mayo @ home 5-3. That Mayo team still had Scott Thauwald & Andy Roberts, better than anyone on their roster this year. Mayo will have their hands full @ East.

siouxhcky you're only saying that because your kid was bad for austin in all 3 of his sports so you transfered him to mayo where guess what, he'll still be bad, i've seen austin play this year and they are a changed team from the past couple years, will they be great probably not but they will be a challenge for some teams in the big 9

dontmesswiththebest you are completely way off on your assessment of Austin. Do you realize that they are 2-2 with playing relatively B hockey teams. And the games were actually close between fairmont and luverne. Dodge County was without drew wohlfiel and mundy who is playing for the ice hawks and they still could not beat them. Austin will not compete with any Big 9 team AT ALL!!!!!. They however will win a few more games due to playing a very weak schedule.

I don't see Mayo beating East, based on the scores so far. East just has a lot going at the forward position. As for Austin, they are obviously improved.

Black Ice - you and your Cougar buddies have a good team to cheer for - enjoy the season.

First of all, I have no kids. Second of all, I can't stand those kids. Lastly, if I ever lived in Austin I probably wouldn't let my kid play hockey, baseball or football to save the embarrassment.

It will be a battle for last place between Mayo, JM and Austin......right now I would lean toward Mayo after their game against JM but as the season go forth who knows....will find out the end of Feb.

woah what is the story behind the Century v. Owatonna game ? terrible defense on the Owatonna part or just a phenomenal game by Century?

my 2 cents so far for the big 9

- mayo is not the worst team in the big 9 sorry it's austin

- when east and mayo play, east will bring the firepower and the spartans will take a loss

- the early feb 4th game will determine the big9 champions

- and something for my scarlets, they will win their next three games (jm, new prague, mankato east) AND someone other than campbell will score goals

scarltethockey33 is correct, feb 4th century goes to faribault and that will be determine the big nine champs.

Mayo needs to get their selves together to beat East, and if they do, it might be a better season than people think

I don't think Century will beat Faribault because of the better depth on the Faribault roster, although i completely respect Century's first line and goalie.

What happened in that Century/Owatonna game, i thought Owatonna was better than that?
