C-Dad...I wasn't aware of that. Is that true? For how long have they been doing that? Do mites only play cross-ice? How is the model set up?

There were A teams in the B bracket at Fargo?

Unless it was a typo, the Minot team that lost in the B final was an A team.

You can't make a decision like creating a 2nd A team on the fly during tryouts. There are just too many implications. Qualified coaches need to be identified, tournaments need to be entered, district scheduling and so on. Those decisions and other similiar decisions need to made long before tryouts ever start. If Edina were to create a 2nd A team, my assumption would be they would announce that sometime in the summer.

But again while beating teams 8-0 on a consistent basis may be distasteful to you, don't assume it's distasteful to our friends in green and white. I doubt this is even a casual conversation in the Edina asociaition.

I'm pretty sure they didn't feel bad about beating tonka in the finals. The game winning goal was scored one minute into the game.

It has really varied but here's what they do this year: Termites (pre-K and K) play cross ice only, 3 concurrent games at a time. Mite 1 (first grade) play half ice games and studio rink games (at Hat Trick in SLP). 2's and 3's play a mix of full sheet and studio rink games.

My kid was a mite 5-7 years ago (right before they started Termites in Edina) and we did a mix back then. Often it was cross ice for indoors and full ice on outdoor rinks. Still can't figure out why anyone would object to mites playing cross-ice, more puck touches for more players, more congestion for the top players to learn to stick handle, still enough room for the top players to excel.

They have great results that's for sure. USAH should use them as the model. So should FL.

The model to follow is the Minnesota Made model, almost all of the Edina squirts As have been and currently being developed at the Made. Not cross ice games at an association practise. Maybe USAH or FL should adopt the model at Minnesota Made, What do u think about oldie.

What happened last year then? Funny but as I understand it that team had a lot of MM kids too but they were only average.

OG85 I wish it were true but Edina's mite program is not necessariy something to be emulated. Yes we have numbers, but there are some legit reasons we lose a lot of kids to Choice. It has gotten better though and at least now I think there are people who are trying to do something about it.

I'd say 10 - 15% of second and third year Mites. Almost nobody in Squirts, who wants to play in a house league at Squirts?

The problem is that group tend to be the more "serious" hockey people which pulls away some good coaching talent. They are also usually some of the better kids so the perception of MM being better for development is a little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy in my mind. I'm not convinced those kids wouldn't be just as good if they had stayed in the Association for Mites.

Some metro associations have 30-40 teams. Mite programs initially put as many as 6 mite teams on the ice at once, cross ice with the pads along the blue lines. Then they realized that they could not only give their mite teams more ice by sharing but then also realized the development can be better too. More touches, small area, quicker skating, stopping and starting, quicker decisions and quicker shots. More sweat, more fun and more smiles.

30 to 40 mite team ? FL is doing something very wrong.

Total teams in the association that all need to share the ice. In some instances that may be why Mite ice was whittled down to once a week because they didn't have the ice to offer the Mites.

One of the secrets to Edina's success is the amount of time these kids spend practicing both on and off the ice. Through the months of Nov.-Jan., the Edina Squirt A team had a total of about 11 days off--these 11 days included Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas day. They were on the ice sometimes twice a day, and many of their practices were well over 1 hour and followed by dryland. This is both time-consuming and very expensive. Most associations don't have that kind of ice available for only one team, and many families simply couldn't afford it. Combine the deep pockets with the deep pool of players to choose from, and I don't see many associations being able to compete with them.

That makes sense.

So how many players on the current Edina super SQA team did play at MM? Understand better players might wants to find more challenges somewhere else, if most or all the SQA players played at MM, does it show to the younger kids that MM is the only way.
