Alexandria? Where did Mitch go? He's done a great job with that program.

Armstrong Cooper has announced that Kevin Gray will coach the Co-op team next year. He has coached in both associations (youth and Cooper HS boys) and is an excellent hockey person.

Andy Shriver will be the new head coach for the Alexandria Cardinals.

Does anyone know anything about Duluth? Word has it they are looking for another coach again. Suspensions due to conduct? Rumors of lawsuits? A once proud program is going downhill fast. There's even discussion of a co-op between Proctor, Hermantown and Duluth. While the rest of the state sees girls hockey thriving, Duluth can't even field a team for one of their high schools? Wow. Maybe they should check out Grand Rapids and see how they do it.

It gets down to a couple of committed dads, grabbing some talented girls at young age (6-7 yrs old or so, 9 it's too late)....then grooming them before they choose basketball or soccer instead.

This is the Grand Rapids story and the story of many other good programs.

Orono spot is still open but closing soon, Albrecht is staying at Simley, she is erroneously listed as taking the Orono spot on hockey hub. But she confirmed that she is not.

Thanks for the info clutterbucket, I didn't think that sounded plausible.

New Cretin coaches: K. Wendell Pohl and J. Pohl. Skrypek will remain on staff. CDH families received a letter in the mail.

It seems there is ALOT of turn over with these teams. Is Coaching the St Paul United and St Paul Blades hard because of the feeder programs?

Coaching St. Paul United isn't difficult. Ted Cheesbrough had been the coach for at least 5 years (that I know of). It's a co-op, but they have a rink on one of the campuses. They take a trip to Europe every year. I don't think money is an issue with the program. I've never heard that the parents stick their noses where they don't belong. Why are you saying it's a difficult job?

Sarma Pone was the coach of the Blades for 3 years. She was only the 3rd coach in that team's 14-year history. She got an opportunity to move up to an asst. coaching position for a local university. That's a good thing.... Again, why are you saying this is a 'difficult' job?

There isn't one single 'feeder' program for either of these teams. United, like all private school programs, draws kids from all over the Twin Cities. The Blades are the co-op team for all the St. Paul public high schools.

In St. Paul there are girls' youth programs at Como (B teams only so far) and Highland/Central (very successful). The only 'problem' is that these two associations send kids to many different high schools, public and private. For instance, the group of freshmen last year who played their youth hockey at HC (and went to state in U12A in 2009) played for 6 different varsity programs last season.

I didn't say it was a difficult job, I incorrectly used captial letters asking why there is "alot" of turn over. I guess there isn't alot of a turnover.

So thank you for answering my question. It looks like a good opportunity for someone - either job.

There has been no discussion of a co-op between Proctor/Hermantown and Duluth. Duluth Marshall has dropped girls' hockey, so it's just Proctor/Hermantown now. That drops that program down to "A". Proctor/Hermantown does not have a numbers problem. Last year the programs had 31 Varsity/JV girls, a U12, and a U10 with 20 girls on it. That doesn't include the 10 -15 girls playing boys hockey in the 2 programs...

Hate to see any school drop girls hockey. It's a little surprising that Marshall decided to do this, as they've had such a strong tradition with their boy's program.

From today's Pioneer Press:
--Former Gophers hockey standout and NHL player John Pohl has been named girls hockey coach at Cretin-Derham Hall High School.

Jodi Loeblein-Lecker, activities director at the St. Paul private school, said Pohl would be the Raiders' head coach. Pohl's wife, Krissy Wendell, a former U.S. Olympian, will be one of his assistant coaches.

Noted high school boys coach and college men's coach Terry Skrypek also will return to the Raiders as an assistant coach.

"It is really exciting news for us,'' Loeblein-Lecker said. "We play in the most competitive conference in the state, and we are really excited to have this group of coaches.''

A parents meeting to meet Pohl and his coaching staff is planned for July 11. A letter to the parents of girls hockey players announcing the news was sent this week.

Pohl, 32, a business education teacher at Cretin-Derham Hall, led the Gophers to the 2002 national championship. A prolific scorer at Red Wing High School, he was selected Minnesota's Mr. Hockey in 1998. He played for four NHL teams during a professional playing career.

--Longtime St. Paul Academy/Visitation girls hockey coach Ted Cheesebrough stepped down to take an assistant coaching position with the Centennial boys program.

Cheesebrough was the head coach at SPA/Visitation for the past nine years. He is a 1992 graduate of Centennial and former junior player. He will assist newly appointed Ritch Menne, a former high school teammate.

"I couldn't pass up the opportunity,'' Cheesebrough said. "It's a chance to go to the big boys.''

Poor Jaime Grossman. It was rumored that a "Former women's Olympic hockey player" interviewed for the Eden Prairie job. Don't know if it was true, but some of the girls were getting excited about the possibility that Brook White, Winny Brodt or Krissy Wendell may be their new coach. When Jaime was introduced you could almost hear the collective mental "Who?"

My daughter informs me that Coach Grossman is "OK", and runs an "OK" practice (High praise. Really.) I find myself wishing EP had used the opportunity to make a statement and provide the girls with a female role model. Maybe that shows my age and nearly 30 years of title IX has female athletes forgetting about the "female" part and thinking of themselves as "athletes". No gender specific role model required.

Never was a chance to get one of the mentioned girls. They would only accept applications from people that had been head coaches. Jamie will do well.
