Because your top pitcher is often times also your best player, in JM's case if Spencer Brady pitches the first game he won't play in the field the second game. By pitching Hovick first they get Brady in both games.
Also you may think you can get by with a lesser pitcher and save your top guy for later. If you waste your top guy first in a blow out and the team you'll face next doesn't you could be in trouble.
I understand the win the first one thoery but this isn't a double elimination tournament so you need to be ready to win 3, not just the first one to keep you out of the long road back in the losers bracket.
JM is down 3-2 in the 7th, it's not due to JM's pitching, they're down because with bases loaded and no outs a kid (3rd hitter) grounds into a double play on a 2-0 pitch.

You have to win one before you can win 3.
If your second guy is that good , he will be fine in the semis in a few hours.
If you win the first game, do you save your #1 for Friday Night?
You would almost have to for the plan to be consistent.
Why does a player who pitches not play in the field the next game in high school ball?

I'm not saying you're wrong PB, some people look at it as you have to win 3 and given that you need 3 pitchers because you have to win 3 games in 2 days makes that a reasonable strategy. Winning the first but losing your top pitcher in the process might not be the best strategy especially if you think your second guy gives you a good chance of winning as well.
In JM's case Brady is their top pitcher and their top hitter, he falls off in the second game after pitching the first. Hovick pitched a good enough game to win but 3 errors and a bad fielding decision killed JM. Their second pitcher pitched well enough to win, and they'd have saved Brady for their game against Jefferson. Hovick was also 8-0 coming into the game.
I understand you have to win the first to win it all, but I can also see going in with the mindset of winning 3, not just the first one and then we'll see what happens.

Bloomington Jefferson and St. Michael-Albertville advance to the semis.
Grand Rapids 0, Chaska 0
Top 5th
Wood-58 pitches, 2 hits allowed
Hand-79 pitches, 3 hits allowed, three walks
Pitcher's duel. I am feeling like this game will be a 1-0 final.
No word on the other quarterfinal.

Id maybe go along with it if:
The guy I sent out there had pitched against them during the season OR MAYBE If I had very reliable info on the opposition and was convinced that my second guy could shut them down or keep it under 3.
But baseball being baseball, its still risky not going with your best.

Only the third Chaska hit of the game. Second of the game for Chaska.
