I agree about the officiating. It was odd, and yes the Framington coach was beside himself over that non-checking from behind call. I was down on the glass looking right down the boards and I can't believe they missed that one.

I have watched Yaggy for a couple of years now. My son plays goal so I watch the goalies in the region like a hawk. I think Yaggy has some of the best skills I've seen, but he was terrible in the first period. But he got over it and played up to his ability the rest of the game and kept Farmington from making a run. Go figure.

If Farmington had a power play they could have taken that game over in the second period. Yet they screwed around in their own end and Mayo gets a short-handed goal.

Mayo is good, but they need to tighten up a lot. Mayo is big, strong, has some awesome forwards, and if Yaggy keeps his head in the game, they have a shot at state.

you both made great observations of the game. a few things i noticed though is that farmington can really contend this year. they proved it holding mayo to 4 shots in the second period and than completely dominating the 3rd period with nothing to show for it. i thought when they did get their chances they made it easy on yaggy just shooting it right into his stomach a number of times. i dont know if you noticed but farmington had 3 players not play in the first period and two of them appeared to be their better players in the 2nd and 3rd. 3, 18 and 6 i believe didnt touch the ice in the first. i dont know what that was all about

sorry just adding on to my other post. haha i agree with both of you about the refs too. the farmington coach was indeed beside himself after that hit from behind but i heard a lot of that was because a farmington jv got kicked out for a less severe hit from behind during the jv game. and farmington needs to find a goalie. when you only face 4 shots in a period (2nd period) you should stop them all, not half of them.

Sure he gave up two on four, but both were pretty good shots. One blew through his blocker and the other was a wicked low shot by Thauwald, who has a big-time shot.

He made some good saves in the first period when Mayo dominated. He wasn't great, but not horrible either.

yeah i suppose. i had heard that thauwold talked up quite a bit but i thought alexander was a much better player. both have great shots though. i thought farmington controlled most of the game after that first period though, it will be interesting to see them come section time because they proved last night they can skate with mayo just fine

Every year people say Farmington is a team to watch and they could make a run at this section. Well they havent and after the loss to Mayo (who Ive been told isnt that great this year) I dont see them making alot of noise again this year. If they win this section it would be a huge surprise to me.

If you haven't noticed my posts I'm a farmington guy... my brother is #18 and those three got benched because they skipped Choir practice on saturday morning. they told the teacher they had an afternoon game which she believed until another student said they didnt have a game until night. Sad reason but discipline had to be handed down. OK back to the game here's a few things I noticed:
1. Mayo kids don't miss when they're wide open in the slot, Farmington shot it right into the mid section
2. Farmington's power play had been extremely solid (already matching last years PP goal total) up until this game. They couldn't even get out of their own end and when they did with a 5 on 3, one kid circled the net or held onto the puck the entire time. Move the puck
3. Farmington proved they can skate with Mayo, defensive lapses really hurt them, especially the shorty, took the wind right out of their sails.
4. Mayo was extremely soft defensively. So many odd man rushes and nothing to show for them...
These 4 things can be meaningless or useful however you want to digest them. Simply put these things mean nothing, what matters is the scoreboard and the scoreboard showed a 6-2 win for Mayo. Mayo capitalized on chanes, Farmington did not. I'd like to see these two teams play again come section time.

PS: on the check from behind call, a Farmington JV kid (varsity floater) was kicked out for a check from behind. The refs apparently went into the locker rooms before the varsity warm up to stress that there will be zero tolerance for any hits from behind. That is why the Farmington coach went balistic.

I thought Farmington outplayed Mayo much of the game but 2 things hurt them: 1) They missed the net way too much, some of that can be attributed to Yaggy playing well but you still can't score if you miss the net and the Tigers probably sent more shots wide than they did on net. 2) Their inabilty to get the puck in deep. When they did the only way for Mayo to break the pressure was to ice it or for Yaggy to freeze it, too many time Farmington let Mayo off the hook by only getting the puck half way into the zone.

After this week I'd put them this way:
Lakeville North - nice win over EP, tough schedule
Owatonna - still unbeaten, 3-0 against 1AA teams.
Mayo - too inconsistant, too many penalties, have a big upside though
Lakeville South - Tough schedule, nice win over Century
Farmington - beat up the patsies but still lost by 4 to Mayo, in need of a quality win
Century - can't score, can't defend, can't win with that combination, injuries aren't helping hem though
Winona - some offense there, if their defense improves may make a run at Century
JM and Dodge County

Farmington and Century both missed chances to help themselves out a lot this past week, Owatonna and South didn't while Mayo split their games. None of the Rochester schools have much at defense; Century gives up a ton of shots and Mayo gives up odd man rushes by the bucket load (Farmington had a 4-0 during the 3rd period for petes sakes). Farmington and Mayo both seem to have some good offense

Owatonna and Farmington play Saturday in Farmington's last 1AA game and should be a really good one. Owatonna also plays West on tuesday in game that can almost give Owatonna the Big Nine with a win. In other key games Century is at AL on Tuesday, North is at Rosemount Saturday, and Farmington gets into Missota action with Red Wing on Thursday.

Are you really going to hand Owatonna the conference already? I realize it would be a great start and a 4 point win, but they still have games remaining against Mayo, Albert Lea, Century, and Faribault again (the other five teams most people think are the best in the conference) - way too many things could happen between now and then.
Also, don't overlook Winona - they played their sophmore goalie against Albert Lea and he made 50 saves; the Winhawks also have a line that can score against anyone. Way too early to hand the conference to the Huskies even if they get the 4 points against West.

Also, as far as Farmington dominating the game - a few things:
1) Mayo dominated the 1st period and had they scored a couple more it would have been ugly.
2) Both of Farmington goals were due to major Mayo mistakes on the blue line and in the goal
3) Mayo had to kill off tons of penalties - 8 called against them to Farmington's 2 and if you watched the game the chippy crap was much more even; the refs called strange things and missed blatant penalties
4) Yaggy is good and good goalies make it difficult to score by covering most of the net
5) Mayo is lazy at times in their own end giving up many shots and sometimes some golden chances.
6) Tom Alexander is the most under-rated player in the Big Nine and Section 1AA

Here's some advise...Don't put all your chips on the table. Not only did West get the 4 points, they shut your boys out.

I couldn't agree more. 5 more goals in Austin last night. Hopefully he keeps it up as the schedule gets a little tougher.

It's going to end up being owatonna and LN in the section championship unless LN and LS get the one and two seed which will make one sweet section championship

I would never count LS out with Hakan playing goalie. He has struggled lately but he is someone who can win a game for his team any night.

Farmington lost their last section game of the regular season to Owatonna 3-1 last night. Owatonna moves to 4-0 in 1AA games with the win. Owatonna still has Winona twice and home games with JM, Mayo, and Century as their remaining games against 1AA teams.

Does anyone know who Owatonna will be playing in their holiday tournament? On followthepuck it still has TBD. Thanks.

North had a hard fought tie tonight against century

thatmakes the lakeville teams vs 1aa as follows

North 0-0-1
South 1-0-0

with the North/South game tommorow, should be interesting

Good grief. Not even the Lakevilles can decide in this section. South just barely snuck by Century, and North ties. What is this section coming to?

North played horrible (Ive seen them play much better, see EP)
Century is horrible (they look worse every time I see them, they never have good puck control)

Owatonna looks good in this section but you cant count out LN, LS, or Mayo. I dont think Century has a shot at all, maybe they win one game but not the section.

Whoever comes out of 1AA will probably have Roseau waiting/hoping to draw them.

Winner of Section 1AA makes a historic run to the state championship, without giving up a single goal throughout the sectional and state playoffs.

even though owatonna has lost by 7 both times they have played a good team this year...

I believe they have had two poor outings. If u have one bad period in playoffs season over. But other than that 9-2 isn't bad.. Something to build on. I know Will and his staff need to make sure everyone is ready to play their game for 3 periods.

I wish them good luck and a home playoff game this year.

After that it gets down to 6 solid periods starting at the net and moving out.

Let's do that let's get Section 1 in the finals. We made good progress last season with Century. Let's do a little better. and I expect Class A to be very competitive at state this year whoever goes.
