Yes but this was just another player to the long list that has left. And yes pucknutz some were destined to private schools, actually one. But during their sophomore year the kids had made up their mind to leave because of Welch. And even the one destined to leave , Welch had a major influence on him leaving.

So it sounds like the drinking from the same pitcher of koolaid theory has some legs? And we all know that it's the parents that make that koolaid don't we.

You too Gopher are missing the point. I guess it's a matter of interpetation. You see this issue as all about 1 benching. One spoiled kid.. If you read on lot's of this discussion goes much deeper than last night. I only know that at some point the coach has to take some responsibilty for the demise of his program. Kids are leaving, quiting whatever the reason , they will not play for coach Welch. I would agree with gopher 1234 The parties only beginning. Coach Welch should have got out when he had the chance. Watch the wheels fall off now..

Well, who is it that these little darlings wish to play for?
Jacque LeMaire?
If they cant handle a "tough" coach, good luck to them in life. Are Mommy and Daddy going to be able to help them when they get a job and their boss disciplines them?
Pathetic.
What happened to the people of Hastings? Did all of the parents leave town?

I couldn't agree with you more packerboy. Who do these kids want to play for?
If I don't like my boss am I going to go whine to somebody to get him fired. Suck it up and go play hockey. A little discipline never hurt anyone.
I not one to single out and rip high school players, but the way he played his first couple games back I wouldn't want him on my team (They'll be better off)
One last thing, you look at all the successful high school coaches this state has had and at some points in there careers they have or have had controversy surrounding there programs. These coaches didn't become great because there were nice guys. Hard Work, Discipline, Motivation, Attitude, and Respect is what these great coaches drove home day in and day out. If these kids don't learn that now they'll be lost in the real world.

It's the way he treats kids? Winning is the only thing that matters to him. The kids mean nothing to him unless they make look good and he knows it. The guy's coaching is so washed up that he has forgotten that he is supposed to be there for kids not for the W. Thats whats wrong with Welch.

Tuffy, why do you think all those kids left? Do you think the fact that the 6 kids left was a good idea or bad.
Welch loses another player

The team will do just fine without the kid. They were playing well without him and when he did come back, he didn't do ANYTHING that impressed me. He sees himself a better player than he is. SEE YA! The team will come through this just fine. Good riddance!

Is he supposed to be their buddy?
Even if you dont like his style, our precious witto darlings are going to be exposed to that kind of thing their whole lives. They better get used to it or they are in for a bumpy ride.
I dont know anybody who hasnt had a boss, foreman, supervisor, chief surgeon, head nurse, judge, whatever that they don't like. Tough. Learn to deal with it.

PB- as much as I don't care for the coach with the deep voice, I have to agree with you. He has a job to do and if the kids don't like it.......too bad!

And you know this how, did you play for him? You're a idoit if that is your point of view. Of course he cares about the kids, his entire staff is made up of his former players. Has he made some decision that I don't agree with, sure, but the fact of the matter is he is an outstanding coach. There is a reason why when this team started out 0-8 that in 7 of those game they were either up or down by 1 goal. He has forgotten more about hockey then you or I know.

My son had a coach for peewees that we both hated. The guy was as arrogant as the winter is long. My son will also tell you that the guy was the best coach he has had. By the look of the season Hastings is having I believe the current group of kids is learning that Coach Welch knows what he is talking about.

Pack enough with the baby talk. It's irritating. This issue doesn't effect me in any way and i assume it really doesn't matter to you. Correct? I think your missing the point though. As i said earlier. This issue seems to run far deeper than Welch benching 1 kid. Lot's of kids in the Hastings program have either Quit-Left or Played JR Gold and wouldn't even try out for varsity over the last 10 year's. No man should have that kind of power. Shame on the community and the spinless A.D.. I would agree to a point with Pucknutz maybe he's earned his right to quit when he's ready, but on the other hand what if he's so bull headed he waits till he's destroyed the whole program? Would you be ok with the State of Hockey down there if your children were playing?

Ooooh, poor witto ALSECORD, he is irritated.
Sorry, I couldnt resist.
But seriously AL, if kids in Hasting aren't playing for their school, because of a coach who has been to 6-7 state tournaments, are you sure its a problem with the coach?
What do you think the problem is? He is too tough?
He is trying t make them better players not be their buddy.

Per usual, packerboy knows "jack" about the circumstances of the issue, but offers us the authority opinion deal. Could there possibly be more to the issue or since Mr. Welch has been to the tourney a few times, we'll just look the other way. Brutal

I'm just trying to be diplomatic and open minded. Mrs. Secord will still have my slippers and newspaper ready when i get home no matter if Hastings wins or loses. Seriously, as an outsider looking in it's obvious they have some real problems down there. Far beyond 1 spoiled kids benching. I do not advocate any kid telling a coach how things are going to be done, so i'm not siding with the kid. But your dealing with teenagers. They won't play for, nor give the effort for a coach they don't like. Some how they need to figure it out. I don't see a real bright future for the Raiders as i don't see any Hastings teams in any of the Rankings. No different than pro sports you can't get rid of all the players. I would have to agree with something an earlier caller mentioned (not sure who) but me being an old St Paul Suburbanite Section 4 was by far the weakest section in the State back when SSP and HAstings (Welch's so called glory days) so i'm not sure i'd hang my hat on that for long..

Precisely my point - I don't know the specifics of the case so I will not make a judgement on the merits of Welch one way or the other. Did they teach you what discovery is "po witto Packooboy"?

Poor witto alliesecord.
first, off it does matter and effect me.
second, there hasn't been a lot of players opting out of the high school. there was the group of jrs and srs that got let go early as Russ made room for a group of sophmores to play varsity. hoping to keep them around but that didn't work so well. funny how it's the same group that would be srs now ain't it.
third, GAGA GOOGOO.

No you aren't being open minded at all you have wanted to scorch this guy since you started posting on here. This years group seems to have drank the koolaid the coach is serving as they have knocked off a couple of good teams and nobody is looking past them. they were playing better without that kid then with him so what does that say??? They may have made it out of a weak section but they didn't play the same teams at state and they had success. Look at that weak section and conference Roseau plays in. They were the best in the group they were put with. Could it have been they were just that good??

I dont know how you can say that Welchs golry days were when he was in a weak conference. He coached a tremendous team. They had 5 D1 players. Dan Welch, Jeffe Taffe, and Ben Tharp all went to Mnnesota. Adam Gerlach went to Mankato, and there goalie Matt Klein played at UMD. They were good, it didnt matter their conference, they had a 3 year run, of conslation, 2nd, and 3rd, at the state tourny. Russ was a tuff coach then and he is today, the kids just have to own up and play for him. Their squad isnt that bad this year.
