Toss up here..AL is a tough team to beat in Feb/Mar...they prove this every year...but with MW speed, and PP they are going to throw out a tight game...I am going to go with MW in 2-1 OT. In my opinion the team with the fastest/ smartest neutral zone wins this game!!

I hate to see refs decide this game though, I havent seen great reffing in Mankato for a couple of weeks now, hopefully they will let the talent run the ice tonight and keep the whistles to a minimum.

Time will tell.

you mean like when there's a fight for the puck along the boards and the west players hook their stick up into the other player's groin or give him a crosscheck to the back as they're pushing off. is that the talent you want to see them let go? it's up to the players to clean it up. is there such a thing as an incidental trip?of course. noone wants to see a ton of those kind of calls,but west has some guys who are more concerned with getting even than winning. i predict that they'll get some of these retaliation penalties at some crucial times. maybe even tonight.

what a game, two very good teams. anyone else there? why were the AL coaches after the ref after the game? i did not see anything but was watching the puck go in the net. must have been something to set them off like they were. AL, better team than i gave them credit for. thought MW would win by 2 or 3.

what set off the AL coaches was the no call behind the play before leivermann scored the game winner. A west kid came and took out an AL forward who never was near the puck. But the interference call in OT was the weakest call I have seen all year. You just dont make a borderline call in OT!!!!!!!! or a borderline call with a few min left in regulation its an unwritten rule. But funny thing is Royce takes a weak checking from behind and the kid never hit the boards and royce is out for 10 min. But 18 from AL was smoked from behind in the boards head first and no call. Anyone have footage of that check from behind?

Just a couple thoughts on the game tonight:

1. Both of these teams are very good and it was a pretty well played, fast paced game tonight.

2. I was disgusted with the way that Mankato West disrespects the game. Prime example: Number 7 (Anderson) was 'hurt' and put on a pretty good show and got the trainer to help him to the door. Turns out the kid was in fact putting on a show as he turned around and was out on the next shift. I hated the fact that they constantly took shots on the AL goalie after the whistle.

3. There were a few calls, and 'no-calls' for that matter, that I questioned. I think that the checking from behind penalty called on Royce was not the correct call. Give him a cross check and I don't think anyone would've said a word. And then to turn around and not make the checking from behind call on the hit on Bowman? That was brutal. I also agree with Fubar that there was a blatant call that was missed on the last rush. I think the AL coaches definately have something to be mad about.


Overall, this was a good game between two very equally matched teams. This really screws up the section seedings and the Big 9 is now West's to lose.

you must of missed the AL kid punch West #27 in the head behind the play before he took that dumb interference penalty. It was a good call... i agree they could've called the west kid for a penalty in the corner before leivermann's goal, but it could go either way. Royce's checking from behind may've been weak, but it was from behind, maybe a boarding or something would've been better. The west hit from behind later on wasn't a penalty, the guy turned into it and didn't go head first into the boards. The game's emotions get the better of us sometimes and we feel the refs always screw over our team. This debate can go back and forth forever. Let's try to focus on the fact that this was a great hockey game, and just ads that much more fire come sections

Refs pretty much swallowed the whistle the whole third periond. Al got a pp opportunity with 2:48 to go in regulation. West got one in overtime. Lots of calls both ways that could have been made that weren't. These are two very evenly matched teams that got after it. I thought Al got the better of the first two periods but West really came on in the third. Both goalies played well as there were numerous odd rushes for both teams. Great crowd at ASA tonight and some pretty good hockey

freak. Pretty sure Anderson was not putting on a show. Talked to him afterward and he told me that he has never taken a stick harder to the "seeds" Guessing that you might have a little hard time skating after that

Tonights game was a real classic! I thought both teams played very well tonight. Goaltenders both played great. I liked the zebras calls tonight, I thought they called a good fair game. I really thought the linesman was funny because he looked just like Will Farrel? Anyway it will be a great section playoff this year. I feel the winner will represent 1A well. So what will the seeds be?

1.Lourdes
2.West
3.Albert Lea
4.Red Wind
5.New Prague

Ok. I was there and there were a lot of questionable calls. I agree with that. From what I saw the refs clearly blew that check from behind Bowman from AL took from that West kid. Also from what I saw that interference in OT that was called on AL should have been a no-call. I also think#7 for West should win an Academy Award/Oscar for Best Actor. #7 did one heck of an acting job on his injury. Or should I say the the lack their of injury. Now I will say that AL did have a few chances to take the lead and possibly pull-out the win in regulation. AL and West split the series. There will likely be a section meeting between AL and West. So I can't wait for a rematch!

I also thought that this was a well played game by both teams. The atmosphere in the arena was ridiculous. It had to be fun for the players. And for all of you that are ripping on #7, back off. How do you think it would feel getting two-handed in the nuts?

I don't know what it feels like honestly. But it still doesn't explain for why there was no whistle/penalty on the West kid that checked Bowman from behind. It also doesn't explain how that was interference in OT on AL. The refs kept the whistles in their pockets for most of the 3rd Period. And then all of a sudden they blow their whistles in OT on what should have been a no-call. Let them play. Both AL and West were playing for the Big 9 Championship. This was a huge game for both teams. The refs should not have made that call. Let the players decide the game on the ice like men.

First let me say I am not a fan of either team. I went to see a good high school hockey game and was not disappointed. I thought #8 for Albert Lea might have been the best player on a rink that had a lot of quality players on it.

Overall I thought the ref's tried to let the kid's decide the game. I would however disagree with the notion that the check from behind on 18 was a clean hit. It happened right in front of us and everyone around thought it should of been called (and suprised that it wasn't), regardless of the point in the game. That kind of hit is dangerous and should never be allowed. The ref was 10 feet away looking right at it.

It didn't decide the game however. Give West credit, they capitalized on their chance. Albert Lea had a chance to not even let it get into OT but didn't capitalize.

In the end I thought it was just a great high school game between 2 teams that there is very little difference. I think if they played 10 times it would end up even. Should be a great rematch in sections.

you are kidding right!! The Albert Lea players back was to him the whole time and he blatantly took a run at him. If you try to play it any other way you are only fooling yourself. That was one scary check from behind!

I thought the refs did a good job up until the royce debacle(from behind) then after that the reffing was so inconsistent its no wonder the AL coaches came unglued.

Everyone seems to ignore that AL did have the only PP of the 3rd period with a little more than 2 minutes left and didn't capitalize. Also, agree that how the ref did not call the CFB is beyond me.
Both teams could make argument for non calls throughout the end of the game. Kids did decide what was a great playoff type game with a great atmosphere in the arena.
The Rec Center is going to be rocking in couple of weeks.
