Unless they do away with sectional qualifiers that will never happen.
If you want a state tournament, its as good as it can get and better than ever.

If you want a state championship playoff system, it needs some work.

We can complain about Section 1 but remember a lot of people cried foul when Lakeville was dropped in there and that section should be left for the "real" southern MN teams. Think about if that had carried the day.

For a state tournamnet, its pretty good.

To make things better, 1AA needs a few private schools added to the mix....

Much like the college football situation our high school hockey playoff format is flawed if the desire is to place the 8 best teams in the tourney. Not that long ago Moorhead and Elk River would lock horns in section play (these two teams were perennial powers) while SSP was a regular at the tourney. Yes, from a competetive standpoint I think we'd all love to see all the best teams make it, unfortunately the MSHSL is not going to allow this to happen. Heck, if things keep going the way they are now we might just see a private tournament. While I woudn't be a big fan, the level of hockey would be exceptional.

hockeymin, you may have a point that maybe another southern metro team should be put in there but you just made the point too that sections are up and down. What good would it be to put AV in the section this year? none, because they are brutal this year and woudn't of done anything anyways...what good will it be to put rosemount in there after this year? none, because Rosemount will return it there old true form soon and be a losing team.... All I'm saying is that yes this section is down right now but give it a year or two to build back up...and Lakeville South is not a joke, I have been watching them play all year... This is a completely different team than what started the year. They are 11-2-1 in there last 14 games. They have beat Rosemount, tied Jefferson, took EP to overtime, tied eastview, was leading burnsville after 2 periods and then lost it on some bad penalties... they are a very physical, defensive style team with a great goalie and there offence has started clicking the 2nd half of the season averaging 4-5 goals a game....and yes, if they draw a edina or roseau in the first round of state they probably will lose, just like every other team in the state, but I garuntee you they will give them a game...if they draw anyone else I believe they have a great chance to pull off the upset...so quit whining about the section and, in the words of TO, get your popcorn ready

I like to see a team from each area of the state. I'm sure northerners don't like Anoka or Elk River representing section 7, and southerners probably dont like Lakeville representing section 1.

If you are going to put a city school like Lakeville into an outstate section, why not put Burnsville or Rosemount down there too? Where exactly is the line drawn?

Hey Neutron I'm thinking Centennial/Roseau Quarter Final.
Mostly Ironheads, but a few flannel brains have chimed in. If Centennial gets by Blaine, I'm hoping Quarters. We want to be "The One!"
A match up with a quality team such as Centennial in the Quarter Finals,
Semi-Final against Hill-Murray, Finals against Edina or BSM.
Thats the only way Roseau would get any respect from the "bored".

Hell they won it last year and all you hear is so and so lost so they had a cupcake schedule in the State Tournament. (they did beat the #1 ranked team int the state to get there)

Of course this is all hypothetical, but IT CAN HAPPEN :)

Good luck to all, well except Edina.

south will most likely win and i could see them pulling an upset or at least make it a really close game

north could put together a win though becuase they are playing with a chip on their shoulder

but south is a decent team, yes there are better teams that are not gonna be in the tourny, but theres nothing we can do about it! so we should drop this topic and wish the best to the winner of section 1aa

I have no problem with them doing sections geographically and have less of a problem with Lakeville making it to the tourney. Can you imagine how ripe for scandal back door deals and politics would be involved any other way? Can you imagine this "bored" alone how much bickering about ranking the top teams and dividing in 8 sections would be?
I'm glad they beat Rosemount. Cloquet won't beat anoka....the only thing I can say is that a team with 11 losses doesn't deserve to be there.
Really? What about a team with 10 loses because I believe thats how many Burnsville had last year.

As for your point about Lakeville being better than someone...they aren't very good and will get drilled in the quarters. If they draw Edina or Roseau it will be embarrassing.

Oh, for sure. They will lose like 12-0 because they won't have a chance.
There is absolutely no way that LS can play with most teams in the state. I mean everybody can beat Rosemount 6-3. And everybody can beat EP in OT like LN did right? Oh, who is going to state that went to double-OT against EP?

Someone did a score comparison. Tonka beat LS 6-0. Roseau beat Hibbing 6-0....Mayo beat Hibbing 6-1; therefore, Mayo must be better than Duluth Marshall, within a goal of Roseau, which means LS is 3 goals better than Roseau since LS just beat Mayo 4-0 right?

Oh, one last thing. Hill Murray is going to crush Century. It won't even be close. It will be like 8-3. Oh wait, Century won, Hill went 2 and out; Century gave Roseau a game; Roseau beat GR 5-0, and Century beat Burnsville in OT for 3rd place in state - and yes, that nasty Burnsville team that had the nerve to lose 10-11 games while playing a Lake conference schedule.

Yeah and AHA is going to cruise to state. Or maybe Burnsville will beat them.

I havnt seen to much "crying" on here. More of a stating the facts kind of things. Like the fact that alot of teams in the State could walk through that section. No need to have the panties in a bundle. Many times those teams are good. Its just that this year they are a little down.

Things are cyclical, always will be. Lets keep our fingers off the resectioning. At the State Tournament, we need to have a team from the NW, we need to have a team from the NE/north metro, and we need to have a representative from the South/south metro. Stop complaining and enjoy what we have, and that is the best High School Tournament in the nation! Better than Texas Football, and better than Indiana Basketball, right here, Minnesota High School Hockey!
DmanDad1980, You hit the nail on the head on this one. Exactly why MSHSL should leave it alone and quit manipulating the process. She's a darn great tournament!!

i think there is a simple way to solve this... just have the 1A SECTION WINNER REPLACE THE 1AA... they will probably have a better chance anyway/ :?

There will be a parade in one community when the draw is complete. The Lakeville entrant has no chance with Edina and Roseau and will be a big 'dog to a different seeded team.

Rather than argue about it I'm content to watch it Thursday.

Sometimes a team with losses is playing well at the end of the season. It is hard to say that's the case here because the section didn't have any Top 10 or Top 20 teams. At one point I think South was 4-9-2 and then the schedule eased. Winning streak? Yes.

Best of luck to them in St. Paul.

O-Town, do you mind explaining to me about South's schedule being eased? By my calculations they have gone 10-4-2 in their last 16 including a big win over a section favorite (according to your odds) in Rosemount a tie to Jefferson and the losses to EP twice, EV, and Burns with all those games being tight. From what I heard, the south/burns game was tight so then I guess you could say that with South playing well they could hang with Edina. South needs to be given more credit. And why did no one complain when a middle of the road Lake team in Burnsville made it to the tournament when teams better than them went home. This is why we love the game and the state tournament. Leave the made to order tournament to the Schwans cup, God knows they put an all star class together.

Being that Lakeville South beat Rosemount 2 weeks ago, and has a better resume than Cloquet....

Is it fair if one of those teams make it?

Big deal they are slightly over 500 and beat a Rosemount team that just lost 8-2 in their section final. Face it, this is a weak section.

Do you need me to explain how to use toilet paper too? Sheesh, I thought some things were obvious.

In mid-January Lakeville South was 4-9-2.

They had faced:
  • 2 Top 10 teams (lost both by six goals)
4 teams between 11-20 by PS2 rank (0-3-1 with a tie in the first Eastview tilt)
    3 teams between 21-25 (0-2-1)
That's 0-7-2 making them 4-2-0 in their other six games against teams ranked from 58-117.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

The rest of the way Lakeville South has faced:
  • just one team from the Top 10 (lost to B'ville 6-3)
two teams between 11-40 (lost to E.P. and beat Rosemount, their only win all season against a team with a PS2 rank better than 43)

I wish Lakeville South well. Do you really need more detail on how their 'turnaround' was enabled by a skewed schedule where they faced most of their tough opponents before January 15th?

This team gets rocked if they face Roseau or Edina first game.

Lakeville South played a much tougher schedule than his altar boys at BSM but he still goes on and on about how great they are. South would have an impressive record playing that schedule too. No team still playing AA hockey played such a cupcake schedule....he doesn't bring that up though.

O-Town - you are right, they have no chance and they will lose 11-0 to Roseau. The shots will be 61-8 and we will all be disappointed.

If they play Edina, the shots will be 48-16 and they will lose 8-1.

If they play BSM, the shots will be 41-19 and they will lose 6-2.

If they play Hill, the shots will be 37-20 and they will lose 5-1.

I wonder why they will even bother to show up.

P.S. This is the exact same post from last year. Century had beaten nobody, except for the very same Rosemount team, so why did Century even bother showing up eh?

P.P.S. Oh yeah, the PS2. Almost as reliable as the BCS, ESPN NFL Live predictions of the Super Bowl, Vegas odds makers, and some Clown down in FLA who is not even in the state to watch the games.

Thanks for sharing. I am glad all of your favorites have won their respective sections.
