Ness should and will win Mr. Hockey. He is officially a senior, and he's the only player in the state with the so-called "X factor." What I mean is this: if a guy from Alabama or something who'd never watched a hockey game in his life were to come watch Aaron Ness play, that guy would immediately recognize Ness as the best player on the ice. Ness is one of the very few players I've ever watched for whom this can be said. The kid is incredible and I hope he does well at the next level (and of course at the state tourney).

I was thinking of the Olimb comparison also. Help me out, was Olimb primarily a defenseman in HS and forward in college?

I said the best HS player I've seen in 20 years, not overall player. Him and Langenbrunner both left as Jr's. Crowley and Spehar played senior seasons. If we compare up to Jr Year Crowley doesn't matchup with Ness in my mind. I've seen alotta great HS players but Ness has really impressed me over the last 2 years.

I think by Sat night you might agree. Or I might be hitting the Ness Kool-Aid alittle too hard.

Ness is outstanding, and that is understating it. Just got home from the X, my 35th year attending a Thursday at State. Ness has a hockey sense that even Crowley didn't have, his passes were on every stick tonight, his lateral movement is the quickest I've seen, but I will say that he is not as fast (straight ahead speed) as Gleason from Edina who also looked great tonight.
Ness is better than Martin, better than Ballard, better than Leopold, but and a big but, he is small like Crowley, which may hurt him down the road as it did Mr. Crowley...

100% agree, Gleason's first goal was the second best of the day. However, second to Ness. Watching this kid was a treat, I didn't get to her old Lou talking him up, but believe everyone at the rink was talking about him just as much. I haven't been around long enough to crown him the best ever, but definatly the best i've gotten to see.

can he put up over 100 points in his first two seasons at UM like crowley did? crowley even played in the world juniors then so he probably missed some point night games.
He is certainly in the position to do it. The gophers don't have much for offensive d other than fairchild but ness will be their go to guy on the pp and able to rack up assists.
100 points is quite a big number though.

It's sounds like the Patrick White thread from last year just a different name. Ness is great, but can he get it done at the next level.

My vote is for Ness over Crowley. Both of these players have/had unbelieveable vision but Ness is more offensively explosive. I agree with what someone stated earlier, better than Ballard, better than Martin, etc. I played against Martin in HS and Ballard while he was at Omaha. I thought Ballard was the best player I ever played against but I think Ness is even better. I truly believe he will have a very good career in the NHL despite his size. Print that!

Nice Freshman season, no comparison, not even close between Ness & White... In fact Ness was better than White last year as a Sophmore

To me the most impressive thing about Ness is the fact that he doesn't have to make highlight moves to wow you. The kid just flat out knows how to move the puck. The speed is impressive but a lot of kids have speed but this kid just sees the ice so well. It will be interesting to see how he makes the leap to the WCHA.

Patrick White was good last year. Ness was the best player last year.

I cant believe how many quality 90 birth year defense this state has produced!! Ness is good but there are a few that are just as good and many not too far behind him. Ness should get Mr. Hockey mainly because the way voting takes place...Gardiner is awesome...Gleason is awesome....student (89) is awesome.....man see all great defense, what a tough choice.

Not sure you're getting my point. I've never been anti-Ness. Not grumpy at all. I was actually quite proud of how GR played against Roseau. This year and last. Hey, when a team beats you, they beat you. No need for sour grapes over that. But I suppose this year's 1-0 Rams win had nothing to do with the fact that GR played well in Roseau's barn. Was probably only 1-0 because Roseau was off. Anyway, watching the game on tv, not every Ness pass was tape to tape, he didn't play the perfect game. He makes great hockey plays, but nothing I've seen him do(while still great)has made me believe he's better than the ones you mentioned. Crowley was a better skater and both Martin and Leopold were better defenseman. I also wouldn't crown him hands down Mr. Hockey either. He'll probably win the award, and if so, congratulations, but I feel there's others more deserving. I wish him the best, and as stated in one of the other 1000 threads about Ness, as a Northern Minnesotan and Minnesota Hockey fan in general, I hope he makes good.

The future tends to write the past. If Ness makes a splash @ the U everyone will say, Remember 2007 or 2008 watching Ness play. If its a bust it'll be, Ness just another of the many outstanding HS players. Ness is probably one of the greatest D-men that Roseau has ever produced, period, in my mind. I don't need to know the rest of his career to make that statement.

I would agree with Mr. BO Jangles. Aaron Ness is a very gifted player, but I for one don't think College hockey will any kind of push over for him. He's a fabulous skater, but struggles to contain his man in the corners. He got beat out of the corner at least twice last night that I saw, and this is only MN High Schoool hockey. There are are a whole lot of big strong forwards in College hockey that will give Aaron more than he can handle..

Agree........I thought P. White was the best player I had seen in a few years at the HS level. Ness blew me away last night, he's the best I have seen in a long time. If the Rams get on the power play early, you are down 1-0. Ness is sick quarterbacking the PP.

My only concern with Ness (and it is a mild concern) is that he is a little small when projecting him to the next levels.......Any comments regarding his size???

I remember that we Roseau fans were a little concerned about Neal being too small for the next level. He ended up having a pretty fair career after high school.
