So it looks like no HS hockey... but it isnt career ending so he will still be a gopher.

Is that correct?

I heard he was moving to some where in Nevada for a few months? Is this correct? If so, that would be crazy!

I agree it would be a very difficult decision. Either way he will recover and thats the important thing anyways.

How did the Edina football team do anyways?
They won 49-6 over MPLS Southwest.

Zach's a great athlete, and a great person, here's to hoping for a speedy recovery and a successful career in hockey, or whatever he chooses to do.

And for the Nevada thing, I go to Edina, play on the football team, know Zach fairly well, and have absolutely know idea what you're talking about?

What an unfortunate development. I was looking forward to watching this group from Edina this year, even if they are from Edina. :D

It'll be interesting to see what sort of implications this has on hockey this season. Edina still obviously has plenty of talent, but 2AA just got a bit closer, as did the top of the preseason rankings. It could have a huge impact on the course of this season, and one could now reasonably argue that the AA field is wide open.
I don't know about that, I still see Edina as clearly having the top talent level in Minnesota.
I'd agree with that...and certainly, a line with Everson and Lee on it is still the best in the state. Combined with Edina's quality on defense and program depth, they're still probably number one on paper. But it took an OT win to get out of the section last year, and AHA and Jefferson are right there should Edina falter even a bit.

Prior to the injury, the only people disputing Edina's presence at the top were a couple of Hill-Murray partisans. That's probably going to change now.

ACL tear

If I'm not mistaken, Qyntel Woods tore his ACL in HS and didn't have it repaired and played basketball throughout. Maybe it was a minor tear, but ACL's aren't life-threatening. Hopefully he recovers to 100%. Quickly is even better for his sake.

I was specifying a member of his family was aware of this. You may want to reach in a bit deeper.

I wasn't saying that you were incorrect, I was just saying that I had not heard that this was the case. I'll ask him tomorrow if you really want me to "reach in a bit deeper."

You are either mistaken or it was a very minor tear. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a grade 1 tear (complete tear) takes months upon months to heal correctly. Usually, an athlete will not be back to 100% until 12-15 months after a grade 1 tear. Even a grade 2 tear (partial) usually takes more than 6 months to heal properly.

I agree. Tiger has been out for 6 months and recently said on ESPN he isn't even close to being completely healed. It wasn't even a question when Ryan Stoa went down in the second game last year. Anytime you hear ACL, you just cringe.

Hopefully he recovers completely, the Gophs could really use this guy next year.

I heard elsewhere that the injury happened late in the game, with Edina up big. Anyone know?

Read in the Star that the injury occured on the opening kickoff.

Zach - everyone involved with hockey and football wishes you a very speedy recovery. We've all had the pleasure of watching you lead your football and hockey teams (even if we weren't all rooting for Edina) both on and off the field/ice. You can be a strong emotional support to your team as you rehabilitate your knee. Modern medicine has made great strides and you will overcome this injury. You're an amazing athlete and a stand up guy. You have a wonderful supportive family and a town that admires and respects you. You will get through this - keep your chin up and we all look forward to watching you play again soon.

Komada, I'm sure you are right about it being a minor tear. He, like Zach, injured it playing football (didn't realize that until I just looked it up). He also missed a season of basketball, but that wasn't until later. He played his senior year of HS and led his team to the state championship.

===

Sat out 1999-2000 season at Moberly JC as a medical redshirt after left knee surgery.

Injury to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in left knee occurred when he was playing football for his high school team in 1999.

Postponed knee surgery and played his senior season of basketball with a brace on his knee.

Averaged 23 points and led Carver High School to the 1999 Tennessee state championship.

Southwest kicked off to open the game, and Zach got hurt on an Edina kickoff, so it wasn't the opening kickoff. I believe was halfway through the first quarter, Edina's second kickoff of the game. 13-0 score.

All I know about Zach Budish, I've learned from my third grade daughter.

Last year, she was hanging around a rink and Zach Budish walked by. She yelled "hi" to him and he actually stopped and chatted with her for a few seconds. She has not stopped talking about Budish since that day. She found a picture of him in the Strib and put it on her wall next to her pictures of puppies and kittens. When she skates, she says "do my crossovers look like Zach's?" She also said she wanted to learn to check, just like Zach (which might be tough, because she weighs about 50 pounds).

Anway, Zach, if you're reading this....get well soon. There are a lot of people who have you in their thoughts and prayers (especially one third grader from the suburbs). :)

Amen to that.

Perhaps everything will go so well that Zach will yet have a chance to step on the ice with his teammates late in the season. This will be my prayer.

Any further word on the Nevada thing? That seemed to come out of left field - but who knows?!

Lily, this is the kind of kid Zach Budish is. He is a wonderful young man and this bump in the road is something that will make him even stronger. I'm proud to have coached Zach, he is person of great character as well as being a fantastic athlete.

From what I have heard, Gopher coach Lucia was in contact with Budish shortly after the injury and informed him that he would have to play Juniors for a year now, instead of stepping in with the Gophers right away next year.

Highly unlikely. Lucia had Garrett Smaagaard come directly from HS after an ACL injury during his senior year of football.

Same thing with Mike Hoeffel. He messed up his ACL playing hockey half way through his senior year in February of 2007 and he was on campus the next fall.

I doubt Lucia will treat Budish any differently.
