Northfield= 23 shots on goal
Novas= 35 shots on goal
Power rankings are a poor indicator because they are based on historical performance and not the capability of the team.

Shot margin well in Mpls favor. What was the penalty count?
Past performance is the only indicator we have unfortunately when ranking or seeding teams. Maybe what Power Rankings show us is whether a team has played up to their ability historically? Or at least played up to what we perceive their ability to be. Teams that don't regularly play up to their ability or a certain standard probably shouldn't be ranked/rated high. Inconsistency isn't a good thing in this case but can make for some "upsets" I suppose.
If nothing else "Power Rankings" generate discussion I guess =) When I look at the QRF rankings they have a pretty good track record of predicting outcomes based on what their site cites statistically so I would say they have some value from that perspective...

In the JV tourney I heard Simley won vs. Northfield but not sure of the score...

Northfield- Nova penalties pretty even. Power rankings this early in the season are not good predictors (not enough data). Coaches are still switching lines and players to build the team they want to head into conference play with in January.

Sounds like the shot count wasn't skewed by large special teams disparity then - must have been a good game as was said above and sounds like NF goalie played well.
I hear it's Simley/Mpls tomorrow for Consolaiton Championship???
And agreed 100% on early season small data set computer rankings! There is similar discussion at: (see last paragraph)

Day 2 results
Mpls Novas 5 - Willmar 3
Simley 1 - New Prague 0
Northfield 4 - Austin 1
Albert Lea 5 - Tartan 3
great games to watch all day - nice work out there ladies!
Shootout champions were nearly swept by Tartan:
Tartan won the team shootout trophy
Kaitlyn Rolando won the best shootout goalie
Best shooter(s) were Andrea Heller (Tartan) and Kinga Gabrielson (Novas).
Sorry to say we (the volunteers) missed the tie with these two (only announced Andrea) Otherwise, we would have had a fun shootout between them to determine the true champ. So they will be co-champs this year.

AL vs NF CHAMPIONSHIP should be interesting after the odds were that NF was the favorite by far and that AL was the longshot to say the least!
Guess this points to another reason why power ratings are great but not always accurate =)
I hear #8 for Simley pulled off a nice move in the SO going upper shelf and the video will be up for all to see soon...

That was pretty cool.

She went to the well twice with that move, unfortunately she didn't score the second time. I think she caught the whole arena off guard the first time!

NFLD beat AL early in the year. The score would indicate that NFLD won convincingly, although those who were at the game know that NFLD got 2 goals in the final couple minutes to turn an otherwise close game into a 6-3 victory. That said, this will be a battle of perhaps the best 2 goalies in 1A. My guess is it will be a good, competitive game.
If nothing else the AL and NFLD girls demonstrated exquisite conga line skills last night after the shoot-out

She's 2 for 3 then the last couple years in the SO's as she pulled it off at Red Wing last year and it stunned everyone... Glad she pulled it off at least once at Austin as she had "no pressure" with me posting what I did on here! =)

Sounds like the Skills Comp was a lot of fun and this in addition to the parity and overall experience is why I thought this was a good event for Simley to return to this year after a 4-year leave...
As to NF/AL should be interesting to say the least and this is likely one of those games that the rankings, ratings, etc. mean nothing...

I know for the JV tournament Tartan took first being the only team to win 2 games out of the 2 days.
JV Tournament (unknown scores)
Day 1:
Mpls Novas vs. Northfield-->NOVAS WON.
Tartan vs. Simley-->TARTAN WON 1-0
New Prague vs. Austin-->NEW PRAGUE WON. 8-1
Day 2:
Northfield vs. Simley-->SIMLEY WON.
Tartan vs. Austin-->TARTAN WON. 13-0
New Prague vs. Mpls Novas--TIE. 1-1
being a Tartan fan i only know the scores for their games. and the New Prague games because they were Tartan's competition for the championship.

Northfield 2
Albert Lea 1
It was 1 to 1 until the final minute and Northfield put it in. It was a close game. I think they were saying the shots were pretty close. It was a fun game to watch.

Final Day's results:
New Prague 3 - Willmar 2
Consolation game:
Minneapolis Novas 5 - Simley 0
Third place game
Austin 6 - Tartan 3
this game was closer than the score indicates.
Have never seen a goal like Austin's fifth one. A penalty was pending on Austin...Tartan pulls their goalie, as they should, a Tartan pass gets by their defenders and goes nearly end to end into the empty Tartan net.
Championship game
Northfield 2 - Albert Lea 1
It was another day of competitive hockey - a lot of fun to watch!
Hope to see everyone again next year!

All Tournament Team - as selected by the local Austin media and the humble (but awesome) announcers.
F - #10 Marin Dvorak - Northfield
F - #15 Lauren Click - Albert Lea
F - #6 Catherine Wagner - Austin
D - #26 Katie Nelson - Albert Lea
D - #26 Mary Ulseth - Minneapolis
G - #29 Sam Stark - Northfield
Honorable Mention:
F - #3 Ashley Arhart - Austin
F - #20 Cecilia Hardacker - Minneapolis
F - #17 Chelsey Wierchem - Willmar
D - $4 Brooke Bartelt - New Prague
D - #7 Natalie Battis - Simley
G - #30 Kaitlyn Rolando - Tartan
Really really tough choices to make. There were a lot of strong skaters out there. But even tougher yet was the goalie group. A lot of outstanding goalie play - Sam and Kaitlyn stood out against a pretty high level of competition from some of the others. Nice work, ladies!

Is anybody else wondering why Albert Lea didn't call time out to re-group and then pull their goalie after they gave up that late goal? Or is it just me?
