There is a nice article on the MIAC website about his brother Cory, a formed Spud himself who was runner-up in the '05 tournament. Though the article is about his brother, the part about family gives you an idea of the type of adversity they talked about in the presentation of the award. It is a well deserved award for Trent!

Congrats to Trent but Nick Leddy should have won this award. He outworked every player in this tournament and anyone that saw him play all three games knows that. If anyone thinks Herb Brooks wouldn't pick Nick Leddy to be on his team out of anyone else in the tournament needs to open their eyes. Leddy deserves this award.
The award isn't for basically the top player in the tournament.
I know that but not only was Leddy the top player in the tournament, he busted his butt harder than anyone else to win the State Title, and he deserves this award. Sure, Johnson played a great game against Edina, but Eden Prairie wouldn't be anywhere close to the championship if they didn't have Leddy working as hard as he does.

This award is not for the best player in the tournament. It is much deeper than that.
Leddy will get his Mr. Hockey, which he deserves.

This is one situation where I am embarrassed to be from Edina.
I believe that is what they call classless.
Andrew Ford should have won for EP. The kid had a great weekend and helped his team win the tournament.

I don't think they wanted to put two sophomores from the same team on the all tourney team. He deseved it, shutout in the championship, but they were never gonna give it to him with Rau making it.

He should get it if he deserves it and he deserved it. Did the goalie that won it win state? Nope

That is extremely arrogant to say Leddy deserves that award because he was the best player is extremely foolish. Big deal if he was the top talent in the tournament, that isn't what this is about. If you actually took the time to understand what Trent went through, and how he gives it all every single time he steps on the ice. I didn't see the every single EP game but I would be willing to bed Nick Leddy did not give it his all, all of the time. He was one of the most talented players in the entire state and there were games where he could coast and still be the best player on the ice. Trent wasn't blessed with that talent; he kind of has stone hands and his shot is average. What he was blessed with was a great work ethic and a huge heart. Althought I believe that there were multiple players deserving of this award that sacrifice everything for their team, including Leddy, I believe they got the right guy. And no, it is not because I am a biased Spuds fan; I actually bashed them and gave them hardly a chance against Edina. I am just an outsider that has a soft spot for players like Trent.

That's probably the worst post I have ever saw, and I hope Leddy would be embarassed by it. From the first game against Edina, #14 was always in there fighting. I noticed him and I don't know much about hockey. He never let up on his backchecks and it paid off for him in the Edina game. Throughout the tournament he was a hard worker and always in there fighting. Just look at the size difference between him and leddy and you know Trent must have a big heart. He just kept on coming. Congrats to him, and as a Mom, I know his Mom couldn't be prouder from where she is watching.

From a post in another thread
Each coach of a team in the tournament nominates a player from their team that they think deserves the award. Then a little essay is written about the player and the Brooks Foundation and Brooks family chooses who they think best represents what Herb Brooks stood for. It has nothing to do with the media. The All-Tournament team is chosen by the media and they have to turn in their ballots by the end of the first period of the championship game.

The all-tournament team is not picked by the media. I have always been under the impression that coaches from throughout the state who's teams are not in the tournament are invited to be apart of the committee who watches all of the games and picks the players who stood out and are deserving of the award. I know that is how it's done with other sports. Clearly the coaches will have better knowledge than the media.

They made multiple announcements during the game last night asking the coaches from Edina, Cretin, and Blaine to come to a certain place to help decide the all-tournament teams. Not sure who else is involved, though.
I also don't think the non-appearance of the Edina and Cretin players is in any way "classless." They have lives beyond hockey, you know, and I'd understand why some of them might want to move on at this point. They had no real interest in the outcome of the title game and did not know they'd end up getting awards.

First of all I'm not taking anything away from Trent Johnson, he played great and will represent this award well. My point is, not that Leddy is the best player on the ice (I know how the award works), just that he outworked and outhustled every player he came up against in every game this tournament and I never saw him let up and let someone else take the puck and I never saw him not put another player to the ice in order to win a one on one battle. In the Benilde game in the section semifinals he never missed a shift despite being at about 70% with a major leg contusion. Also, I don't see why Leddy would be embarrased by my previous post. I'm complementing him on his extraordinary effort for ths entire season. And the point you made about giving the award to Johnson because he is shorter than Leddy is just about the worst argument I have ever heard. If being a little guy is what the award is about than they should stop giving it out. I have made my point and I think Leddy should have recieved the award. Again, I am taking nothing away from Trent Johnson, he is a great player and will represent the award well.

The All-Tournament Team
is indeed selected by the media. I know this for a fact as I was a member of the media once and was given the opportunity to vote.

Interesting I suppose I should take your word for it then.

I wonder why they do not run it the same way as other sports. Thanks wbmd.

All Tourney team....wasn't very well picked. Andrew Ford gets a shutout and doesn't make the team? Nick Heimer win consolation.....gives up four goals total....only two against Breck. Mean while the Warroad goalie gives up bad goals in every game and gets the nod.

I also question why the Warroad goalie is on the all-tournament team.

That is one reason the All-Tournament Teams weren't selected for a period of time starting in the late '60's or early '70's. There were too many disagreements over who should have made the team and who shouldn't have.

I do wonder how the AA Tournaments top scorer was left off, Anders Lee with 9pts, but the Hornets did lose.....

Maybe the reason Everson and Baker didn't show up to the awards ceremony is because they thought Anders Lee was the clear choice for being the top scorer.
