Mason City Iowa 1

Mason City wins shootout 2-1. A great game between two skilled teams, the best game of the tournament.

Brainerd was beating JM 5-1 when I left in the third period.

I was at this game today and Meyers rebounded with a solid game. I think the shots were 36-34 in favor of Benide. Maple Grove isn't too bad though so watch for them as a sleeper team later in the year.

Been a Tater fan for 19 years & had never seen them on the losing end of running time - now I can sympathize with all the teams they've done that to (That smarts !).

All those Tater Haters will love it, tho !
Wayzata will come to Moorhead on the 9th of January.....I can only hope the spuds play better, or atleast score a goal!
And they also have to play Jefferson again, Roseau again, Minnetonka, Centennial and Hill-Murray . . . . . scary!

(Could be a loooong season for Tater Fans)

Well, you know what??? At least they put the effort in to schedule quality foes... I think alot of us realize there isn't a great deal of competition up there, as to why Duluth East also plays a tough schedule coming to the Cities teams.....

The unfortunate thing is that playing these teams leaves little room for error... A team like Moorhead could play flawless hockey, make four mistakes, and lose 4-0... A lot of pride up there....

Is this a surprise???

There just seems to be mixed responses on both teams..... So, with it officially being a tie, are these teams just evenly matched, or did one team play better than thought was capable??? I don't have enough info on either team.

The 6-0 loss concerns me for the Spuds as they just do not lose games by such a large margin very often. Goldfish is right with regards to potent offense of loaded up teams like Wayzata. Loaded in that they have the big numbers. Power play is key early on for most metro schools since they have genarally more senior and junior kids to choose from who know the system already. The smaller outstate programs like East, Moorhead, Roseau, Rapids usually get better the 2nd half of the season and these clubs have to rely on sophomore kids far more than the big metro programs have to. The coaches up north have to mold that puzzle for success much more than the big metro program have to due to numbers. I attribute the 6-0 margin more toward Spuds youth than anything else. They are not deep in Senior talent this year that is the trend (up and down years for depth) in the north but the good news is that most programs get better as season progress. We will just have to see how it plays out in rematch games.

Kind of agree, but kinda don't. Think you're putting too much emphasis on the numbers of students. You bunched Moorhead in with "smaller outstate programs". Here are the enrollment numbers for the four mentioned schools:
Duluth East 1306
Roseau 651
Moorhead 1650
Grand Rapids 1246

In contrast, some metro schools are:
Jefferson 1746
Wayzata 3073
Eden Prairie 3267
Hill-Murray 946

Moorhead has losing records with Duluth East (smaller) and Jefferson (larger) and winning records with Wayzata (larger) and Roseau (smaller).
Doesn't seem to indicate a correlation between school size and the success of programs. Also, the "up and down depth trends in the north" don't just happen to teams in the north - everyone gets 'em.
