I also want the: "we got the spirit yes we do we got the spirit- how bout you" chant banned- implys that the other school has no spirit, which I think is disrespectful:)
Seriously- I'm all for cleaning up stuff thats really in-appropriate, but its gotten a bit silly.

It has gotten silly. Players block that stuff out. Some feed off that type of taunting. I think it makes for a fun atmosphere.

Wow. I can't believe how far "political correctness" has gone. Some chants I have heard is unclassy, but "Sieve" is part of the game. Will these school administrators be happy when the kids sit in the stands like a golf game and give the golf clap only when appropriate. Maybe the A.D. could borrow one of the "quiet" signs from golf. Give me a break.

Every year before Hibbing goes to section playoffs, we get a huge talk at school about how we cant chant inappropriate things at the games. If someone gets caught starting an inappropriate chant they get escorted out of the arena and sometimes get detention at school. But the thing is, most of the chants they consider inappropriate arent even that bad to begin with! The game is played on the ice, but the support comes from the stands, and the schools are taking away the students right to support their team!

Players definitely block it out, not sure about goalies. Contributes to an awesome atmosphere, but I can understand why the AD did what he did.

At least they don't make a facebook group trying to fire their AD like Hibbing did last year. And yes, the kid that made the group did get suspended.

wow how about you calm down it's a hockey game for crying out loud and he was PREVENTING CHANTING and not just sieveing. as you can imagine everyone was mad that he was there and was controlling us outside of school. IT'S A HOCKEY GAME, NOT A TEA PARTY.

Are you saying your from Edina and you don't want "(EDIN)Attention" . Maybe you should wrap your head around the idea that the Atheletic Director is in charge of atheletic events for your school. What you chant is a direct reflection on him and your school. So don't be too surprised that he took action.

The "sieve" chant is way overused anyways. Historically it is used for goalies who let in weak goals, but many fan sections think it works even when its a really good goal. However it should not be banned.

As a goalie, the "sieve" chant had no impact on me mentally. In fact, many times, it helped get my head in the right place to prove them all wrong and shut down the other team. It's ineffective unless the goalie has no mental wall and takes things way too personally.

I agree GoldFishDude, the reading the paper bit never gets old. I especially like it when the moms and grandparents play along too.

He has the right to control you guys, its a school sponsored event, if you don't like it, don't go.

so all of you are saying that since he is in charge of the team that is playing he should have the right to tell the people who are watching the game what they can and cant say. nobody in this country should have the right to say that (especially if they only chanted sieve). If you disagree then god help you. What if obama told us all that we cant say bad things about other countries just because he thinks it poorly reflects our country? IT IS A PERSONS RIGHT TO THINK AND SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT AS LONG AS IT DOESNT CREATE A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT, AND CHANTING SIEVE AT A HOCKEY GAME JUST WONT DO THAT.

#1. It takes away from your accomplishment. Can you only score on a bad goalie? Would a good goalie have saved that shot? When I scored (which wasn't all that often), I liked to think it was something that I did rather than what the goalie did.

#2. Sometimes a team (team a) will totally dominate another team (team b), but the score will be tied late in the game. When Team A scores to take the lead, the crowd will start chanting "sieve" when the only reason Team B is in the game is because of the goalie. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I don't know, maybe I'm totally overthinking this, but those are my thoughts.

YES!!!! my schools administration told us what cannot chant, and if we did, we would be SUSPENDED for 5 days. Do you actually think that you can do whatever you want at a school sponsored event?

Yes you go to his school, you show up to his event and you follow his rules. And of course he is going to prevent chanting if you have nothing but bad things to say. Chanting bad things does create a hostile environment. Your ignorance to these things is troubling.

the "sieve" chant isn't an offensive chant (it is over used) but imo it makes the goalie wanna prove them wrong and not have to hear it again, at least thats what it did for me, and it is rediculous what some AD's think they can do, this didn't happen at a hockey game but 40 students at my school got suspended from athletic events because of a little incident at a girls volleyball game , causing our high school team to play the first two games of the year missing 75% of our varsity roster

It is a harmless chant, let the kids have some fun, I dont think I have ever seen a goalie who was called a sieve go skating off the rink crying because of the chant...your a joke, you ryno and the AD need to take a chill pill....

It is hard for me to play this part on this topic. This year alone my fellow students and I have been pulled away from the student section, been called down to the office and have had long chats with administrators about chants. We were the ones starting those shaughnessy (spelling) at the first wb hill game and we learned from that. We had positive signs, negative signs, flags and horns taken away last night at the stilly game, along with chants stopped. I hate the restrictions just as much as the next student. Its just the fact that he doesn't realize who is running the show? I mean come on, throwingtrash at your AD? Seriously?

it's definately not banned at duluth east. we did it every time tonight. but i agree that it shouldn't be used when a good goal is scored.

Bet ya that 80% or more of the HS Goalies do not really hear the chant anyways. The over emotional goalies more often than not are filtered out before HS Varisty.
