Trebil Clarification

PAMESH,

Trebil was reprimanded for a Captains Practice violation. When the high school league could not make a recruiting charge stick - they plea bargained and fined him for "directing" captains practices; which was a joke because they probably could have fined every high school coach in the state for the same thing.

I believe he was guilty of recruiting in his first couple of years, but he sure as heck doesn't need to recruit anymore. Once you're established the players come.

Greg, certainly has something to do with these kid's development. I mean a player doesn't stop developing when he's 14!

I'm not anti-private school at all. (I found it bizzare when I read in a local Elk River paper a few years ago how the columnist hated private schools and their "recruiting" - lord knows the Elks have only played local talent over the years; he failed to make note of that.)

With all of that said, it would be nice to see the private schools put something back into youth hockey as they are a direct beneficiary of it. The Elk Rivers have had several Open Enrollment kids - but their lifeblood is still their youth program.

I'd like to see Colleges do the same thing for the high schools, but don't hold your breath on that one as we don't exactly have stellar leadership at the University of Minnesota on that front. Herb Brooks would be ashamed of Lucia's lack of leadership in this area.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >Bart82 at: 12/11/05 10:26 pm

We offer the flu shot every year..we need to get a private school phobia vaccine developed.

Or at least we need some organized thought on the subject.

Bart82, how can you post somethig like " it would be nice to see the private schools put something back into youth hockey as they are the direct beneficiary of it"

What do you think the public schools put into youth hockey? Nothing. Zero. Nada.

There isnt a dime devoted to youth hockey in any public school districts budget. Oh, sure the high school coach shows up from time to time to recruit kids for the local public school.... but thats about it.

In fact, private schools in some areas(STA,SPA, Blake, Breck) provide a rink that is used by the youth programs. How many metro public school districts have built a rink used by youth hockey ?

The entity that ought to putting something back into hockey is the MSHSL that makes over a millon bucks on the state tournament.

Youth programs arent funded nor staffed by the local school district. They are private enitites staffed and funded by their members.

The public schools then come along and steal players form our private programs and pay nothing for it even though their facilities and programs are paid for out of the public trough.

Disgusting.

I'm assuming you've got your tongue in your cheek, packerboy, but I'll respond anyway.

I know that Elk River, Centennial and Apple Valley all have rinks on the high school grounds. How much the high school contributes to their upkeep, etc. I don't know, but they are used by the youth programs. I have also heard that Roseville high school players help out at the practices for the younger kids.

Zamman, how can you say there's no parent pressure at Holy Angels when according to 'Blades of Glory' Trebil was punched out by an irate parent? It sounds to me like the parents at AHA can get just as worked up as anywhere else if their kids don't play. If the author of 'Blades of Glory' is a Saterdalen apologist, Sats might want to ask for a rewrite as it doesn't portray him in overly glowing terms. The book struck me as an honest effort to show Saterdalen as he really is, flaws and all. As I don't know any of the people in the book I can't say whether he succeeded but the book didn't come across as hagiography.

Oh thats great Chrisk, the Roseville players come out and skate with the kids.

I guess that means that all the kids in the privately funded and operated by volunteers Roseville youth program should go to Roseville High School.

If we send some CDH players over to skate with kids , should they go there? (some do)

The idea that the youth programs and the kids in them some how belong to the local high school is not reality. It is a fiction.

I honestly dont know what contribution those area's school districts make/made to those rinks. I do know that generaly speaking, school disctricts do not financially support youth hockey.

I had a little fun with my previous post... but not that much. The bottom line is that Holy Angels are the Assembled Angels, brought together through a combination of recruiting by Trebil and staff as well as the parents, and a desire by some players and their parents to go where the grass is greener, however that is measured in an individual's mind (better coaching, go to State, whatever). I say good for Holy Angels, people need to stop whining and teams need to just go out and beat them on the ice. But to say that AHA doesn't recruit is a classic form of denial - reminds me of Bill Clinton - "Depends on what the definition of recruiting is." The AHA "boosters" on this board aren't the only ones "close" to the program, believe me, I KNOW - get over yourselves, you're beginning to sound like cheap politicians denying the patentlty obvious.

Its no big deal, AHA recruits, duh!!!, and by fielding a team of Assembled Angels has about 3 or 4 legs up on the publics, and AHA should play a prep school schedule in a perfect world (which is not realistic, of course). But it should be a good thing for the publics in the long run, it should force them to work harder to keep their players through better coaching, programs, etc., and it should stimulate the players to work harder and train smarter to beat a Holy Angels.

Regarding public schools, remember that a city's schools are part of a city's governmental structure (i.e., taxes). Example: Any youth association playing in a city facility and receiving preordained ice slots, better rates, etc, like at Braemar or BIG, is reaping benefits from the city which is the school which is the community in people's minds. It also happens to be factually correct.

You're just way off, Packerboy, but reality is in the eye of the beholder. Fun debate at the least.

I think that most people on this board would be "up in arms" if a private school coach, or private school players went out and skated with, or held clinics for the local youth hockey organizations. It's my opinion, and I may be wrong (been wrong before), but I think a lot of you would be crying "foul" for "recruiting" if private schools were to expose their players and coaches to the local youth players in this way.

Packerboy, you need to learn how to better infer meaning from the written word. Never said a word about the publics spending more money - just doing better and working harder. Jeesh!

Money is not the real crux of the matter. Holy Angels can build a team through wholesale importing of players, recruited or not, in a relatively unrestricted manner when compared to the publics. That's the bottom line. Still, when I look back at last year's State, I think the key factor was that Trebil outcoached the opponents, so the big public hockey powers in general aren't that far away from AHA anyway - just need to do a better job.

Youth players almost always benefit directly from their city tax base and government, which ties directly to the schools (if you're not sure how that works, take a civics class). I don't think its necessarily that important, but it is a fact, and whether you want to deal with that fact after you wrote about it, Packerboy, is your business.

Yes I am indeed a a Holy Angel and damn proud of it with or without a state championship. Raised catholic and went to catholic school for 12 years, 4 of which was at AHA.

As far as the Trebil incident in the book. The facts are a little crossed. What I had heard, underline heard, was that there was a player who was brought up in the Jefferson system and followed, underline folllowed, Trebil to AHA. When he was a senior he was cut, because he was not good enough for the team. The parent went to Trebils place of business and swung at Trebil. I did not hear of any police.

Anytime you "recruiters" want to sit one on one with me and any member of any private school and want to discuss recruiting I will. Unproven and always will be. Not sure how the Trebil incident with Kranz (the name is common knowledge, printed in the book) fits into this. That was 100% on the parent, I know him and he has a history of being less than civil, to put it lightly. Zamman's recounting is basically correct. I believe the police just followed up with Trebil and Kranz after the fact as they should have been asked to.

Zamman, don't deflect with the paid supporter crap - its irrelevant, just like you being an alum is irrelevant. I don't need to sit down with you to discover what I already know about recruiting at AHA after having gone through it. That's how the program at AHA was built, deny it all you want, I don't care.

The point is that we're past that, and that Trebil doesn't have to personally recruit any longer is probably true, and like I said, the publics should now just concentrate on working harder and playing better to match them and retain their kids.

Lastly, just because you're Catholic doesn't mean you're righteous or holy, as we all know...

MediaGuide and Zamman...I've enjoyed most of your posts but you both need some clarification here.
1) Trebil is not God or anything close. The best coach is only as good as his ability to improve his weakest player. Doesn't take much to manipulate "cream" when you can get it. There are more deserving coaches and programs who's heart believes in and respects the kids he has to work with and consistently produces and improves his players. Trebil always had the cream at Jefferson from all the hard work of the lower level coaches and now at AHA the undying support of an administration who gives him carte blanc do what he needs to secure as many top players as he can get. Not much of a testimony of greatness in my book. Maybe ask the administration how much they spent to defend him?
2) Since you brought the name up Mediaguide, the book never told you that Trebil and Kranz's relationship and intolerance of each other goes way back to their high school days. How well do you know them? Both are competitive and neither are particularly civil when they believe they are right. The issue wasn't just his son who, by the way was supported by his own potential teamates as being good enough but felt pressured and manipulated by their own positions on the team. To this day those kids have mended friendships that were destroyed by a self important manipluator. Two sides to every story...or so they say.
3) FACT: Trebil and Kranz legally got mutual restraining orders...not because anyone believed it was 100% parent related. Just a couple of old turtles living in the past.
5) Trebil is no dummy...he recruited through his players. I watched as he put one Captain through hell with his manipulations and intimidation.
6) Lets get back to watching the passionate players do well this year no matter what team they are on and who is coaching them. Its not about the coaches, its about the players and there are plenty of them on a lot of teams this year.
7) Support your team but don't turn a blind eye to Godliness.
