That was at the 99 championship game I saw.

I would be curious to see what kind of team the Wings and the Stars would field if they had a tryout process which selected the best kids from these two teams along with the other top end talent they have overlooked. At all age levels. I would suspect that could be a team to rival the Blades and Machine any day.

I agree. Neither team holds tryouts at all of the levels. If you haven't solidified a spot on those teams early on you are hard pressed to find opportunities to help your kid develop over the summer outside of driving them long distances to find a team that has tryouts. It's a shame for kids on the outside looking in.

Sounds like they believe in developing their kids. Also sounds like an opportunity for another team, so those kids can be inside.

The LSS already do. I wish I would had persued the LSS right away. I had my son on the Wings. That program was a joke. They cut my kid because he was to small? The LSS have a small team but focus on team play. They have minimal practice time but really push team play. They have the summer hockey model. Your picked to play for them and you are not cut. You are part of the Stars family and the kids grow together. They teach more than hockey, they are building better people. Our Bulldog team is trying to do the same. There are many more teams up north now and you can find a place for your child to play. Fact is the best players up north want to be Stars first. They do get the pick of the kids they want and the ones that fit the team game. Oh they do miss out a coaches kid here and there but overall they are on top. Bulldogs are pushing to be a team that has the Rep of the Stars not the wings.

Two problems here...

1.LSS calls ewe, not the other way around.

2.Both of these programs cut parents much more frequently than kids.

So if I understand you correctly..???? the Stars and the Wings choose their players based upon the status of their parents????

No not at all...they both select players in your traditional fashions...tryouts & recomendations etc...

99% of the time once a player is on the team they are there to stay...both teams promote loyalty and family values...almost to a fault. Both teams would likey improve the w/l over time by having open tryouts every year, but thats not what they are about.

Ewer biggest risk of getting CUT is if you have a nut job parent.

No, Coach will just tell your kids teammates to let him know at school.

You were let go and now your crying in your spilt milk. Get over it and get a life. You coached the bulldogs and had a full roster, then when you played the Wings team you were cut from you loaded up a bunch of pickups and sat your regular bulldog kids. Get a life loser.

Yep....both LSS and the Wings have very good/well respected coaches at the various levels. The northlandhockeygroup has started a couple of new teams up North in the last year, so the landscape appears to be getting better as far as providing an opportunity for everyone who wants to play & improve over the summer.

I talked with my neighbors brother's second cousin's nephew who knows some kids on both teams and he said the Northern Wings beat the Bulldogs 6-1.

Just found this post and it is quite interesting to see the different perspectives.

I think the Wings and LSS have the two top programs in the North. The Storm, Bulldogs, etc are quite a bit weaker than these teams.

I can only speak for the 97 level, but I find it really sad that the Stars and Wings have only played each other twice over the years. The Wings have always played in the Stars tournament, but the Stars do not enter the Wings tournament. Seems like they are trying to avoid that match up. The Wings have won the Stars tournament and taken 2nd as well, so I think the nod has to go to the Wings at that level.

It would be really simple to settle with a 3 game series some weekend over the summer. Granted both programs draw players from outside the Duluth area, but both programs would likely enjoy and benefit from a series to wrap up the summer season.

Hopefully they get that chance before the core of the teams start going seperate directions.

I would assume you are talking about the 97 level only. The Stars are tops in the 99 level up North. The 99 Wings have a pretty good team but the Storm beat them 2-0 last year and the Bulldogs are definately a step below the Storm. The 2000 and 2001 Storm teams are looking pretty good as well so I wouldn't put them down in the level of the Bulldogs teams.

I will say that the 99 Wings team this year is better than the Wings team last year.

Yep...just referring to the 97 level.

At different age levels, the Wings, Stars and Storm have gotten the early jump on kids and made solid teams. With those three teams being established, I think the upstarts like the Bulldogs, Gulls, etc have a much more difficult task if their goal is putting together Invite level teams.

The nitch that they can provide is more of a development model where they could practice several days a week and build a base from people who are looknig for that over a more high end competitive model. No doubt the other programs have developed players, but because they draw from such a wide area, having a regular practice schedule is for all intensive purposes impossible.

As far as the 97 level goes, I still give the nod to the Wings. Until they play the Stars though, it is all just personal opinion. I hope they eventually cross paths again.
