I'm not sure either must be a strange animal or something.... No but for real Mora and Farmington?! They have a combined record of 82-117 since the 05 season and ZERO state tournament appearances.

The wind would be an issue though, in addition the weather near Lake Superior is unpredictable at times. It is a great idea though; sort of a Mystery Alaska feeling to it.

A couple years ago, when Lake Superior was frozen practically solid with no snow on it, an East youth team (Bantam A?) had a scrimmage on the lake. There was a great picture in the DNT; I just went looking for it but couldn't find it. Love the idea.

I thought I read somewhere someone suggesting having the game in the canal next to the lift bridge. Fans could line the walls (although I'm not sure that would be enough room for the crowd it would draw). Maybe it'd be easier to have it in the harbor behind the DECC?

Another excellent idea. They could get some bleachers up on the Canal Park side of the canal, so that might be feasible, and they could have standing room on the lift bridge.

The harbor would probably be most practical...it freezes much more solidly than the open lake. There are entire winters during which it would never be safe to hold a hockey game on the open lake.

I dont think the canal would work. Too many currents at play for it to freeze solidly. Plus worse case scenario, someone falling through the ice, at least in the harbor you would have a chance at surviving. In the canal as soon as you fell in you would have no chance, the currents are too strong.
Also Karl, Jack Rendulich took those pictures of the Bantam A team, I would imagine they are still on his website.

The ultimate venue would be to have the nhl winter classic at TCF stadium (if we get it). You go with TCF because hockey on baseball fields has poor seating / viewing angles. TCF would be right on top of the action, right in the middle.

Then you have the HS hockey day right before / after the NHL game and make it one large production. You could even throw in a WCHA game.

I'm just waiting for that day... then I can die with no bucket list!!!

Are the teams being picked on who's been to state the most and has had the best record since 2005? It's Hockey Day Minnesota and small towns are a part of that, as well. Even the ones not named Warroad and Roseau. I don't know why the opponent was Farmington, but Mora has two lighted outdoor rinks, decent locker room space, and believe it or not the ice is better than most indoor rinks. An ice path could be made from the indoor rink to outdoor for the players to skate on. It's a much Better idea when you really think about it

I'm pretty sure the first "hockey day" was in Baudette on Baudette Bay. Yes it was cold, the teams swithed sides midway through the second period.
I like hockey day, the idea is great. I would like them to keep with the idea of bringing it to places around the state, not necassarily the power schools. I also would like if maybe more programs around the state picked up on it. Most if not all programs started skating outside, play a game that day on your old outdoor rink if it still stands, or some other classy place, make this truley a state wide deal....

Mora fits that.. Different area than before, old outdoor rink that's still functional, and not a traditional power. even though, I too agree that it won't happen

I think it is time for Grand Rapids to host Hockey Day. One of the greatest hockey towns in the state and has a community that would hold nothing back to make this event something extraordinary. I think a Rapids vs Edina Hockey Day main event would be outstanding. Either way, the Rapids team will be one of the top teams in the state next year and would draw a great amount of attention. Other teams fun to match up against Rapids would be Hibbing, Cloquet, Duluth East, Bemidji, Warroad, Roseau or Eden Prairie.

I have a hunch the metro is next in line for a Hockey Day. There's only been one so far, and it was following two northern ones. After this year, there will have been two more northern ones. I think it'll be metro next year, probably somewhere west since the east side had it last.

Maybe something like Minnetonka vs. Eden Prairie on Lake Minnetonka, or something coinciding with the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships on Lake Calhoun. More likely a north vs. metro game at a metro's football stadium or something.

Just guessing.

I like the Lake Minnetonka idea at Maynards - it is where they play the North American Pond Hockey deal (the red-headed stepchild of the Lake Nokomis pond tourney :D )

However, when I've been to that area of Maynards in Excelsior, it seems like parking would be a real issue. Same thing if you were to host it on Prior Lake. The metro lakes are so developed - large parking lots, or numerous parking lots, are just not in abundance.

It will be interesting where it ends up.

Island Lake just north of Duluth would be the perfect place to play. Plenty of space for people to watch, great hard frozen ice etc. I think the Hockey Day should always feature a North-South game. Two metro teams would alienate the northern part of the state, as would northern-northern (itd be good hockey tho :D )

How about Hill vs. WBL on White Bear Lake? Since they can't beat Hill at Aldrich, the Coliseum or in their own shed, it's gotta be worth a shot. Then we could hear clever remarks about it being a home game for half of the green squad.

The next hockey day should be on Pleasant lake outside of Eveleth mn . This is where the flim Pond hockey was flimed. Eveleth vs Virginia and Hibbing vs i falls. You can ice fish as a bonus.

OK, they had two in a row on Baudette Bay. Then in Phalen Park, then Hermantown, now Moorhead. All great places, great to do this thing. I wouldn't mind seeing it in the tc area as long as it is in a neat place. All programs have a unique history, traditions etc... showcase them.

quite alot of hockey history there, not a bad idea, eveleth hasnt been as good as years ago but that shouldnt be a reason not to hold it
