John Casey was the difference.

Always enjoyed watching teams coming down from the Iron Range. The 1987 Greenway team was a special one - they lost in the state semis to a very talented Bloomington Kennedy team whose only loss of the year was to Greenway.

Ken Gernander and Kris Miller on the Greenway team and Joe Decker and Jason Miller on the Kennedy squad as I recall. Yes, that team from Coleraine was great.

Some painful memories are hard to forget. 10 division 1 players on that team.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Roseau in the 70's when they had the Broten-Broten-Erickson line. If I recall (this is a tad before my time) but their only loss was in the state semi's to Edina.

2001-2002 Rochester Lourdes come to mind also. I think they were something like 25-0-1 until losing to Red Wing at State.

1998 Red Wing is another.

Agreed for those programs, Moorhead has 6 state runner-ups (correct me if I am wrong), and White Bear Lake (not to be confused with WB Mariner) has not won a State quarterfinal game yet..

They're 0 for something, but I am unsure it's 31. That number seems too high.

I figured you just threw out a number; however, I wanted to be sure before I made a comment about it!

I seriously thought that the 04-05 team was going to break that trend. I was at the game and all I saw were break the curse t-shirts, bracelets, and very confident (some cocky) WB fans. WB had a great team, played great but not in the end of the game, and it didn't help DE had a goalie that was standing on his head.

It's almost like the Cubs winning a World Series; however, they just havn't gotten past the first round. I hope to see trend end, personally.

It has to be this year cuz white bear as no great players coming up anytime soon but I doubt it will happen

I would throw the 1988 Armstrong Falcons in there. 18 seniors, ranked #1 most of the year but fell short to Edina in the section finals 2-1. Bruces best chance for a state title.

That's a nice one. I still remember being at that Thursday night game at Met Center. Edina got two in the 1st and held on for dear life to a furious 3rd period push by Armstrong. Edina was the #4 seed in '88 and ended up winning the whole thing. Shows you what can happen in February & March when a team starts to click.

A few others:
-1986 Edina: Quite a few D-I players on that one, highly ranked all year, upset by Damian Rhodes & Richfield in the VI semis.
-1995 Jefferson: So much talent, but had no goaltending. Still remember when East was up 1-0 on them and Josh DeWolf took it the length of the ice, completely removed Cade Ledingham's jock, and his backhand hit the post with the wide open net. My buddy instantly said when that happened, "It ain't Jefferson's night." The wheels came off shotly after in the 4-0 loss.
-2000 Eden Prairie: The consensus #2 after Elk River all season long. Got shocked by Edina in 4 OT's. Often called the "Seasons' Over" game after the EP students started chanting "Season's Over" in the last minute only to give up the tying goal with under 5 seconds left. Ironic that the consensus #1 & #2 teams all season long didn't even make it out of sections. Shows anything can happen come one & done time.

This one is probably to old for most to remember.
The 1978 St. Paul Johnson Governors, the #1 seed in the section with a future Harvard goalie in nets and a senior laden team lost 2-1 in OT in the section final to a South St. Paul team that was under .500
Painful youth memory.

91-92 WBL Bears, led by Brian Bonin.......Lost in the quaters of the sectiona 3AA playoffs to the lowly Mounds View team. That Bears team had a ton of talent, especially top end.

Probably one of the best teams I have seen in high school hockey; they had amazing puck movement. (I'm talking ER here)

Both 1988 Armstrong and Warroad teams lost to the same Edina club in the post-season that year.

They ordered an upset special... twice!
