About the time that Shattuck, St. Mary's and St. James schools merged in the 70s, they were given the umbrella name Bishop Whipple Schools, after the founder of the three schools. That name didn't last long.

Winona had hockey in the 1950's as referenced with the 1952 state tourney trip and had it through at least 1958. This I know because I asked my dad who graduated from winona High School in 1958 and said they had the sport then. So it was dropped after that at the public high school and added again until 1984-85 when Section 1 was 20 teams and WHS was the 21st team in the section.
