The deadline has passed, and thus the polls for Week 5 are now closed. There are some very close "vote totals" in certain games, and the outcome of these games will likely determine which of us do well, or not so well. The four most closely contested games, and their vote totals (W-L-T) are:

Tuesday, December 11th
Blaine vs. Anoka: 13-10-1
Orono vs. Mound-Westonka: 13-11

Saturday, December 15th
Eden Prairie vs. Wayzata: 12-11-1
Blake vs. Red Wing: 13-9-2

I'm going to try something new, just for the heck of it. Below is an “unofficial entry” that I am submitting for this week's contest, using the collective wisdom (average) of the predicted scores submitted by all active contestants this week. This entry will NOT be eligible for any prizes awarded to official winners, as it is for fun/curiosity purposes only! ;) I will refer to this entry as “Collective Wisdom” when updating the Leaderboard throughout the week. In this entry all scores, representing the average scores submitted by all of this week's contestants, are rounded to the nearest whole number:

#6A Orono 3, #7A Mound-Westonka 3 (tie)
#15AA Stillwater 2, #10AA Mounds View 3
#3A Thief River Falls 2, #1A Warroad 5

Thursday, December 13th
#4A Blake 3, #7AA Eden Prairie 4
#13AA Andover 1, #1AA Minnetonka 4
#19AA Eagan 3, #9AA Lakeville South 3 (tie)
#5A Breck 2, #2AA Benilde-St. Margaret’s 5

Friday, December 14th
#3AA Edina 4, #4AA Roseville 2

Saturday, December 15th

It is good that you placed at least the "wisdom" portion of this collective entry in quotes.

Scores and game recaps where available:

Blaine 4, Anoka 1
Anoka’s Katie Burkey scored the first goal of the game at 2:34 of the 1st, but Courtney Jensrud shut the door the rest of the way to lead Blaine to a 4-1 win. The Bengal’s Kiersten Falck scored the tying goal late in the 2nd period and Katie Swanstrom got the winner right after they dropped the puck to open the 3rd. Shots on goal between these two Northwest Suburban rivals were very even at 24-25.

Breck 5, St. Paul United 2
Kendall Williamson scored two goals to pace the Mustangs over St. Paul United.

Minnetonka 9, Eagan 1
Seven different players scored for the Skippers in an easy 9-1 win over Eagan. Amy Petersen and Laura Bowman had two goals apiece, and Draayer Diana notched five assists. In goal Tonka’s Hannah Ehresmann stopped 23 of 24 to hold the Wildcats to a single goal.

Orono 4, Mound-Westonka 2
The scoresheet was not available when this edition went to press. ;)

Mounds View 4, Stillwater 3
Likewise, the scoresheet for this game was also not available when this edition went to press.

Warroad 4, Thief River Falls 2
Sierra Hanowski scored two goals and Lisa Marvin added a goal and an assist in the Warriors 4-2 win over the Prowlers in Warroad. Shots on goal favored Warroad by a 36-23 margin.

In our contest there were lots of perfect scores this evening, including two by backspin and two by Rocketwrister:

In the Blaine/Anoka game, it was backspin and oag. Eleven others picked up a single point for picking Blaine to win.

backspin, Rocketwrister and Bighead got the bonus in the Breck/St. Paul United game. All but one (who had forecasted a tie) notched a single point for picking Breck to win.

Rocketwrister, Bison Buddy and Otter saw the 4-2 Orono win over Mound-Westonka coming. Eleven others picked Orono to win this one and got a point.

And Hieronymus got the lone bonus in the Warroad/TRF game.

There were no correct scores in the game between Eagan and Minnetonka, nor in the Stillwater/Mounds View tilt.

So, after our first night of game action this week, here’s the top of the Leaderboard:

1. backspin – 8

2. oag – 7

3. 36guy – 6
Knight7 – 6
Rocketwrister – 6
Bison Buddy – 6
sinbin – 6
capitalpride – 6
Bighead – 6

10. Eight tied with 5 :(

18. Seven tied at 4

And, for the record, “Collective Wisdom” also netted just 4. I might have to come up with a new name for next week! ;)

Game and contest recap of tonight:

Lakeville South 3, Eagan 2
Eagan took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period, but Lakeville South rallied to score three in the 3rd to win 3-2. Callen Naasz scored the winner, a short-handed tally, with just 0:56 remaining. Shots on goal were very even as both teams’ goalies made 18 saves.

In our contest 15 of 24 correctly predicted a Cougar win, and three also got the score right: 36Guy, sinbin and D16Dad.

Minnetonka 3, Andover 1
Amy Petersen, Laura Bowman and Diana Draayer scored for Tonka in their 3-1 win over Andover. Maddie Rooney made 45 saves for the Huskies to keep it close.

Everyone had the Skippers winning this one, but most thought the margin would be greater than it was. However two of our prognosticators – FlyingWarrior and ayhfan - foresaw the final score and get the bonus.

Eden Prairie 4, Blake 3
Angie Heppelmann scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Eagles past Blake. Dani Cameranesi scored two goals for the Bears to keep it close.

18 of 24 picked the Eagles to win, but only oag correctly predicted the 4-3 final score.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 4, Breck 1
This game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd Period, but the Red Knights scored three unanswered goals to win going away, 4-1. Brittany Wheeler scored the game winner to go along with her tying goal in the 2nd period. She also assisted on BSM’s third goal scored by Kelly Pannek. For the game the Red Knights outshot the Mustangs 31-15.

All 24 prognosticators had BSM winning, and there were 5 :!: who also got the 4-1 score correct.

Here is our Leaderboard through Thursday evening:

1. backspin – 12 (has picked the winners in all 10 games so far, with two correct scores)
sinbin – 12 (same as backspin - great job!)

3. 36Guy – 11 (a perfect 10 for 10 with one correct score).
oag – 11 (missed one game, but two correct scores keep him/her tied for third)

5. Bison Buddy – 10
capitalpride – 10
D16Dad – 10

8. Seven tied with 9

15. Eight tied with 8 :(

23. Two tied with 7

Just one game on tap tomorrow, but it’s a good one between traditional powers Roseville and Edina.

P.S. Our mythical "Collective Wisdom" entry - which is represented by the average score of all 24 real (human) prognosticators, has a total of 8 points. "CW" was helped tonight by getting the (4-3) score right in the EP/Blake game.

With only 8 points so far myself  , and probably out of contention, my goal at this point is to finish AHEAD of Collective Wisdom! ;)

Andover goalie was incredible against Tonka. Last Tonka goal was empty-netter, but she kept her team in the game.

Roseville 2-1 winner over Edina.

Only one game in our contest tonight, and it looks like it was a very good one:

Roseville 2, Edina 1

Roseville got goals from Kate Flug and Megan Tragiai, and Brittany Boss made 35 saves to preserve the Raiders' win. For the game Edina had a big edge in shots on goal, 36 to 18, including 12 to 5 in the 3rd period.

Based on how our panel voted the win by the Raiders has to be considered an upset, as only 3 of 24 picked them to win. One of the three - Otter - did manage to get the score right and in so doing picks up the extra point. Hieronymus and Racki2016 were the only other two to predict a Roseville win.

With only three picking up points this evening our Leaderboard didn't change much at all, but the upset did break the perfect forecasting records that several had through Thursday.

1. backspin – 12
sinbin – 12

3. 36Guy – 11
oag – 11

5. Bison Buddy – 10
capitalpride – 10
D16Dad – 10

8. Nine tied with 9

17. Eight tied with 8  (the ONLY bright spot is Collective Wisdom didn't gain any ground on me!)

The score of the first of our six Saturday games has been posted:

Hill-Murray 2, Breck 0

Brittney Cusick broke a scoreless tie at1:54 of the 3rd period, and Sarah Bobrowski added an empty netter with 47 seconds left to seal a close win for the Pioneers. The Mustangs could not solve Alexys Woodward, who stopped all 28 shots she faced for the shutout. At the other end Sydney Scobee also had a strong game, stopping 33 of 34 shots by the Pioneers.

This game produced no drama in our contest, as everyone picked Hill-Murray to win and nobody guessed the 2-0 score.

In another competitive, defensive oriented game it was:

Eden Prairie 2, Wayzata 1 - in Overtime

Anna Gravelle scored the game winner with 53 seconds left in OT to win it for the Eagles. Charly Dahlquist had the first assist on Gravelle’s overtime tally and she also scored Eden Prairie’s tying goal toward the end of the 2nd period. For the game Eden Prairie limited the Trojans to just 12 shots on goal vs. putting 20 on net themselves.

In our contest the predictions were just as close as the final score. 12 voted for EP, while 11 had Wayzata and one other (oag) came very close to getting a predicted a tie. There was one correct score, that being by Knight7.

And in our third game of the day, and what has to be called the upset of the day so far, it was:

Hopkins 2, Edina 0

Jillaine DeYoung scored at 12:58 of the 3rd period and then proceeded to add another one just 50 seconds later on the power play to lead the Royals over the Hornets at Braemar Arena. Edina launched 36 shots at Hopkins’ netminder Erin O'Neil but could not find a way to score. Congrats to Miss O'Neil on a fine shutout win!

Out of our 24 contestants this week, just two saw this one coming: 36Guy and Bighead each pick up a point on the rest of the field. Nice call!

Still waiting on the Buffalo/Minnetonka game from this afternoon, while the final two games this week will be played this evening, after which I'll post the final Leaderboard..

Interesting game tonight at Pagel Arena in Minnetonka. Buffalo’s Katie Rooney scored twice in the first period to give the Bison a 2-1 lead after one. But Minnetonka's Laura Bowman scored her second goal of the game at 2:21 of the second period, to tie it up. She also finished with two assists in what turned out to be a four point afternoon. Amy Peterson contributed four assists to also finish with four points.

But the star of the game had to be Tonka’s Sidney Morin, who took over the game in the 3rd, scoring a pure hat trick. Up until 9:03 of the 3rd the game was still very much in doubt, with the score at tied at 2-2. So give credit to Buffalo for hanging in there and giving the No. 1 rated Skippers all they wanted. When the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read:

Minnetonka 5, Buffalo 2

All 24 of our prognosticators had Tonka winning, so everyone picked up a point each. There were many who ALMOST got the score right, off just a single goal either way, but nobody predicted the 5-2 final margin.

The final two games of Week 5 are now underway, and I hope to post the final Leaderboard later tonight.

In a battle of two of the top-ranked Class A teams this evening it was:

#3A Blake 4, #2A Red Wing 2

Dani Cameranesi’s two goals in the 3rd period propelled Blake to a 4-2 win over Red Wing. Cameranesi also scored in the second to tie the score at one, after Red Wing’s Nicole Schammel scored the first of her two goals. Shots on goal in the game favored the Bears 37-25.

Even though Red Wing was the higher ranked team coming into the game, our panel favored Blake to win by a 13-9 margin, with two predicting it would end in a tie. Once again, many came very close to getting the score correct, but not quite. So 13 get just a point apiece vs. the 11 who were blanked.

Now just waiting on the CDH/Mounds View result, after which the Week 5 Leaderboard will be posted.

Our last game this evening was yet another close, hard-fought defensive battle between two very good teams. In the end, Mounds View would prevail:

Mounds View 2, Cretin-Derham Hall 0

Mounds View’s Bella Sutton had a goal and an assist, and Kathryn Larson added an insurance goal midway throught the 3rd period for the Mustangs. And, not to be overlooked, Mary Dingman stopped all 21 of the Raiders’ shots for the shutout win. Mounds View is now 10-0 and will take their undefeated Suburban East record (6-0) into their game Tuesday night against conference rival Hastings (4-0-1 in conference).

In our final game of the week, 19 of 24 got it right in terms of who would win, but once again no one predicted the score. So this left us with a two-way tie for 1st Place in Week 5, between a very consistent backspin and sinbin, each of whom accumulated 17 points on the week. Both backspin and sinbin predicted the winner in 15 of 17 of this week’s games, and each also got two of the game scores correct. Pretty good in a week that included its share of “upsets”, I’d say.

Also kudos go to 36Guy who finishes all alone in 2nd place with 16 points (15 of 17 with one correct score).
Here is the final Leaderboard for Week 5:

1. backspin – 17
sinbin – 17

3. 36Guy – 16

4. Knight7 - 15
capitalpride – 15
D16Dad – 15

7. woogieboogiewoogie - 14
oag – 14
Bighead – 14

10. fishfreak11 - 13
Silent But Deadly - 13
Bison Buddy – 13
MNHockeyFan – 13 (respectable finish – enough to surpass my goal of finishing ahead of “Collective Wisdom”) :)
Otter – 13

15. Bleedinred - 12
FASTWHEATIE – 12
Rocketwrister – 12
Racki2016 – 12
SouthSuburban – 12

20. Five tied with 11 (including “Collective Wisdom”) :)

24. One with 10

P.S. Reminder to get your picks in for Week 6, no later than 6PM on Tuesday!
