Rivalries with private schools can be interesting. Although some are obvious public vs private, as with WBL and Hill. Some are private vs private, as with Blake and Breck and I think CDH and STA (although I haven't witnessed it first hand).

Nothing negative intended. Trying going to a random public v. private game. With few exceptions, there is extra energy in the building and in the stands when meetings happen, regardless of who the teams are.

Cretin and St Thomas have been rivals on and off the field for years, possibly longer than many of the schools in some of these other rivalries have existed. The last two football meetings attracted many thousands of fans filling both the stands at STA and UST.
The rivalry is alive for hockey as well. Despite not being the most competitive games in recent years, the stands are just as full as always and the game is played just likely any other. In 2006, both schools won state titles and next year they will likely be in the same section.

There are plenty of cross town/cross city rivalries around the state and my guess is that many of the people in them would claim theirs is the best. Seems about right to me

In the old, or pre-Class, Iron Range Conference, nearly every game played was a rivalry game. Falls-Hibbing, Eveleth-Virginia, Greenway-Hibbing, and on and . . . However, none of these surpassed Greenway-Grand Rapids for hatred and intensity. These rivalries still exist but not to the same degree as from late '50s and into the '90s.

I didn't think of STA vs CDH. I bet that one can get some St Paul blood boiling. This one goes back, but Mounds View vs Irondale late 70s early 80s.

I know down here in Rochester it verys from year to year......Some years Mayo Vs JM will be big some years Century Vs Mayo and some years JM vs century. It just kind of depends on how each program is year in and year out but if you want to talk history and a great hockey rivalry without a doubt its Mayo/JM no matter the record no matter the situation in recent years these two teams have put on a show.

And i also know if you wanna bring up public vs private i know a lot of people in rochester want to see the public schools play lourdes but we've already talked about that in anther topic

Edina East-Edina West was quite a rivalry while it lasted, but for me the biggie was always Kennedy-Jefferson. They both had a run of years with several great teams. Always seemed like one was stronger on paper, but you could throw that out as the games were always unbelievably close.

There used to be Eisenhower and Lindburgh...But that has pretty much turned into Roseville.

For all the people who like to bash privates, I remember Duluth Cathedral and benilde as a pretty good rivalry. Back when privates were not allowed in the tournament.

I'm in college so Im not old enough to know of the tourney back then, but private schools weren't allowed to play? What did they do for playoffs? Just curious

Everyone vs. Edina

I sure miss the rivalry with Rapids. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Greenway will ever be competitive enough to renew the rivalry. They'll be lucky if the school survives. The intensity of the rivalry is still there because a lot of Greenway people want East to win when they play Rapids.

Prior to 1974 they held their own independent state tournament.

Irondale- Mounds View used to be a big rival when I was in youth hockey and high school. Makes it tough to be a rival now however with Irondale Youth being in District 10 and Mounds View youth in District 2. The high schools being in 2 different conferences and sections makes it tough also.

I wish these schools played each other every year. It is the same school district they have 3 middle schools with one of the middle schools sharing kids having half go to Irondale the other to Mounds view. When I was playing for Irondale back in the 90's we had some great conference games with Mounds View. When I was in Middle school playing youth hockey there was nothing better than walking down the hall seeing your buddy who plays for Mounds View and talking trash during the day then going and playing against him that same night. Wish it was still as big as it used to be back when I played. However they changed those when they changed the districts and conferences.

I just wish Mounds View would wise up and play at the Superduper Rink too, rather than at that glorified garage they're currently playing in....Then maybe talk about an annual 621 rivalry game.

They are working on it but I believe they have a contract with Ramsey country and Shoreview arena. I have heard that they are pushing to build a locker room at the Super Rink and play home games at the super rink. They have also said if they build a locker room they do not want Irondale to play in that rink and Super rink has voiced their opinion on this and said no. But that is all rumors and I think it would be nice if they could come to an agreement and build two new locker rooms for both high schools and figure something out so both can play at the Super Rink.

Totally disagree, no rivalry at all. Trebil and Sats are both gone, players from Bloomington have been at AHA since they have had hockey. Saying this is a rivalry is like saying whenever AHA plays another team is a rivalry....

Rivalry may not be the right word but there is definitely a reason they have only played each other once in 14 years.

Another sneaky great rivalry of the '70's - '80's which included a few giant tourny games was:

Edina - Grand Rapids (North v. Metro).

Played every year before the onset of the Schwann's Cup.

True. I remember dad taking me to watch guys like Jim Malwitz, Tom Rothstein, Jim Jetland, and Jon Casey. Halloween Machine against the Edina West Cougars.

I thought those games sounded so cool. Rapids playing East and West on consecutive nights at Braemar, every other year. Too young to drive, and my old man didn't go to a lot of non-Hill games,I never got go. To me, it seemed like the Clash of The Titans, Godzilla Vs. King Kong. I'm not sure if I like being reminded of those games or not. At least I know I;ve missed very few Hill-White Bear games since 1984. Just some of the regular season contests when they were in the old Twin Cities Suburban, which was a great hockey conference. No one could take a night off. Well maybe against Coon Rapids.
