Lets keep this one going.....I heard it's a UMD alumni's job to turn down...and not talking about a female alumni.

'CCO reporting student protest on campus this morning? That's kind of amazing that the non-hockey student body is invested in this decision.

Other than this women's coach and women's athletic program, what else is the school cutting? Which other coaches and teams face cutbacks?
Let the lawsuits commence.

I wonder if the students cared enough before this news to attend the games in large numbers...

Yes we can all agree women's hockey is not the cash cow a men's program may be. But almost every athletic program (at UMD or anywhere else) is not making money! They exist for a host of other reasons. Honestly, other than maybe football, basketball, hockey (all men's of course) which other college sports make $$? That's a terrible argument against the decision to replace this coach.

Good article from the USCHO site:

What does the end of Miller’s time in Duluth signal?

It might be a terrible argument against replacing her, but it's not a terrible argument against the fact that she was waaaaay overpaid.

Great question NTMH.

Not hardly.

I hope the players can refocus at UMD and continue playing well after the semester break.

Also, why have the " self-appointed" forum moderators not chimed in to get this thread moved to the college forum? :P

Maybe looking for reaction from the many MN high school and Tier 1 players this directly affects?
And nu2, lawsuits "not hardly?" Already in the works. Lots of factual in addition to opinion press out there today.

Not hardly? Every interview Shannon has given has the words "my attorney" in it! Not taking sides, I think Shannon got the shaft and it was handled poorly. In addition, the timing (Mid Season and finals week) was about as unprofessional as I've seen.

You think she's going to sue them for "mishandling" how they decided not to renew her contract? Everyone talks about suing when they get fired, it's human nature. Then they realize they have nothing to sue over and just go away.

My read on NTMH's post is that it relates less to her personal situation, and more to the Title IX issues that would arise from dropping an opportunity for women.

Reread the AD's interview....He mentions TitleIX compliance. It‘s ludicrous to think UMD
would expose themselves .

Not sure if the AD made a mistake in the firing/letting go, but he certainly did make a mistake with the timing. I would imagine he wants to keep his job, so he and the admin at large will be certain they don't violate any Title IX regs. That would be expensive for all concerned, both for careers and the University's pocketbook.

Sounds like the timing had to do with a 6 month notice in her contract. This is the reason they informed her now. This way they can work on a replacement at the end of the season, otherwise they would have had to wait until sometime this summer.

Correct...Bottom line is $$! So many qualified candidates (with a little different style) as assistants within the WCHA that could could be hired at less than half of what she is currently paid. Program could use a shot in the arm and Coach Fabian, Schuler, Johnson or the recently fired from UMD..McDonald would be a great place to start.
Good luck to the Girls & the Program the remainder of the year!

MacDonald? He would be a great choice and would further incense Miller. MacDonald was well liked and was the one on the coaching staff that would reach out to the local programs. Rumor last year is that he was the fall guy for the poor season UMD had.

No one has mentioned her recruiting budget. Have to believe she took a few trips to Europe each year instead of down to the metro.

I can't vouch for its accuracy, but this comment was recently posted in the USCHO Women's Forum:

"For those referring to the lack of recruitment of European players by Coach Miller, it is widely known that the recruiting budget and overall budget was drastically slashed when Chancellor Martin retired. There is also an extreme lack of cooperation in the admissions department getting the European players the tools they need to be accepted into the school. For multiple kids to miss passing their writing test by ONE point and the university forcing them to wait an entire year instead of coming up with a solution shows a lack of interest in women's hockey by the administration. One of the reasons this years freshman class is so large is because a few of those players were supposed to join the team last year but could not because of test scores."

If this is accurate, then apparently Coach Miller hasn't been able to take as many recruiting trips to Europe as was previously the case, which may in part explain the drop in the talent level of some of her recruits as well as the difficulty some of them have had getting accepted by the school's admissions department. It also sounds like she had a special relationship with the previous chancellor (Kathryn Martin), one that no longer exists with the new chancellor (Lendley Black).

This would explain a lot of things.

Another perspective, written by Brad Elliott Schlossman in today's Grand Forks Herald:

From Brad Elliot Schlossmans' post:

Privately, many in the athletic department have said for years that Miller is very impossible to work with. She has alienated a number of people there. That unquestionably has played a role in this decision.

........

By my count, the Bulldogs have had 10 players transfer out in the past two years as well, which can serve as a red flag to administration.

........

Miller has been very critical of the administration for not trying to find ways for it to work. Had the Bulldogs still been contending nationally on an annual basis, they probably would have found a solution. Had she not alienated so many in the department, they probably would have been willing to alter her salary and keep her on.

And this is what everyone was thinking.
