Columbia Heights over Edina in the first round of 1983 was a big upset. The Hornets won state in 1982 and 1984, and I suspect the 1983 was just as good.

I was surprised it took so long to mention the 1983 "Reggie and the Miracles" upset. That was the first state tournament I remember well, and Edina was a juggernaut that ran into one of the hottest goalie performances in tourney history. Columbia Heights had some decent teams during the 1980s, but the Hylanders even making the tournament was a shocker, much less knocking off Edina in the quarterfinals.

granted it handed Edina another championship by toasting the eventual winner Tonka, but for grueling, end to end all out action this is easily the game. The only thing it did not have was a classic amazing pretty winning goal, it was sort of a fluke .
The Tonka coach woke his players up early the next morning, "so they wouldn't be too tired". I'll never understand that. I wonder if he regrets that.

The winning goal wasn't especially pretty, but it was no fluke and was clean, without controversy.
HM-Tonka was probably the best hockey game I've ever attended. If I remember right there was only one penalty in the 7 periods. Wish it could have been won on a prettier goal though.

I remember for the quarter final matchup, Jefferson faithful showed up wearing shirts that said, "Bloomington Jefferson Hockey, Any Questions?"

After East gave the Jaguars a 5-0 beating in the quarters, the Duluth East faithful showed up the next day with shirts that read, "East 5 Jefferson 0, Any Question?"

This is another classic video. Poor Blaine thought they had it.
