I believe that 6 class A teams have larger enrollments than SPU

I know they beat Breck at least once each of the last two years, but haven't beaten Blake. Has anyone watched their new freshman goalie this year? I hope she's in net on Saturday in FL

I would think it is doubtful she starts...they have a senior goalie trying to be a ms goalie finalist...most likely would play against sibley, simley, Minneapolis, minnehaha

So lets break down SPUs first few games. Which means absolutely nothing really so early in the season. But here goes -
They played (looking at the Hub)
Rochester Mayo - 11-2 win. Not a power house. A solid program with a lot interest and numbers for the program. But doesn't offer much if your looking at them to judge SPUs road to the state title.
Holy Family 8 - 0 win. Again, Not a game we can judge their talent by.
Benilde 3-0 win. They have a record of 2-3 this year. An average team this year at best. Sure they will be in every game most of the time, but not an elite team like years past.
SSP 7-1 win. Tied 1-1 going into the second period. Starting goalie got hurt and went down hill fast from there. Losing a starting goalie affects the team and outcome majority of the time. Always strong be the end of the year.
Red Wing 5-2 win. RW record is 1-3-1 Lost the leading scorer and assist leader Reagan Haley, and a solid senior goaltender. Solid team, but rebuilding and still shoring up after losing some key players. A team to watch how they develope.
What this all means...SPU added a shortimer free agent senior that scored 30 goals from Irondale, not to mention and a few strong younger players as well. All wanting the gold medal I'm sure. Its too early to see if they are the real deal, like all the teams they have played above. Should they be a class A team? Personally they should put all privates in the same conference. But that's a different topic all together. No easy choice, or right answer that everyone will agree on there.
Enjoy the season. Its all good hockey.

Hub says the frosh goalie played the entire game against SSP who is in their section? Not sure your point makes sense? I definitely see a pattern of coaches/parents pulling their starting senior goalies against (on paper) better teams so the untested youngsters can get "experience." Are you saying that's just for Miss Goalie consideration?
And what do you mean by "free agent"? That term has been thrown around a lot recently. So she has an agent fielding calls from schools that need a proven scorer at X position? Free school lunch? A car service to and from practice? First pick of number?
And isn't everyone going for the gold? I told my wife we should have 4 or 5 more kids just to protect the futures of our association and high school programs. (Note - 1st sentence here authentic, 2nd sarcastic)

The number of students a school reports for classification with MSHS league is reduced by the number of students who qualify for the free lunch program...in some schools this is very significant...Rochester school district has even balanced their school boundaries according to free lunch numbers in the past.
FL is a stronger opponent than ssp and those listed..hence play stronger goalie and let her reap benefit of playing stronger teams
Unless they lose and she stinks it up...wins against weaker opponents won't open eyes to a goalie's play
Speaking of ssp earlier, guess how goalie got hurt...hint cheap slash on wrist...you had to see it to believe it..go to some games and watch

They got outshot 43 to 5, presumably without the graduated goalie's dad manipulating the SOG on the hub.
United hasn't had a quality opponent yet but they have done exactly what a top end team should do to those opponents. Forest Lake should be a good test.

"Go to some games." That's funny. I'm sure whatever mystery player you accuse of being cheap - "you had to see it to believe it" - cares more about what the refs think than what you do.
P.S. Hub says your team had 5 shots. 5. Can't blame any goalies or forwards for that. Let us know how they do tomorrow. FL has an incredible goalie.

Anyone know what's going on with Lakeville North? Injuries or illnesses perhaps? They started out ranked No. 7 but they're now 1-5, and no longer appear in the Top 20. Their last loss was to Eastview - who is not yet ranked - and it wasn't even close.
Hopefully the Panthers can right the ship and start to play like the people who do the rankings thought they were capable of.

A case of people voting on legacy and not watching and/or paying attention ..LVN has had a nice run of very strong teams,at this time, this team isn't measuring up to those past teams

Some teams reload, others have to rebuild. I think it's the latter for North this year. Caught a period and a half of their Hill game and all of last night's game against my new favorite team. They worked hard for a period then just flatlined. Strong at the linebacker position but not much else going on there.

Which explains SSP's current ranking as well. Worst team they've ever put on the ice.

You would think the demographics in Lakeville would be in their favor, in terms of the number of girls coming up through their youth program. But considering the rather dramatic falloff from where they were, maybe that's no longer the case. Oh well, thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.

. nu2hockey With a comment like that... you should stick to hunting.
So - SSP ranked at 14? They beat Hibbing (rank 16) twice last year according to the Hub. Once in a holiday tourney, and once in the state tourney. Then this year they skated to a 2-2 tie with Westonka (rank 12) this year For ease of math for you, thats two rankings above SSPs current ranking . SSP beat Northfield (rank 20) this year. So they should be dropped down to... what? Its not like they are in the top 10 here.
Over ranked -
TRF (rank 2?), Give them credit...They beat power house West Fargo ND, and Crookston, and power house Park Rapids twice. Then they come to the cities and lost 7-1 and 7-2 however...oops. Dang city teams. But the rankings said this should of been closer. Teams do have bad games though.
East Grand Forks (rank 6?) - Lost to Mound Westonks (rank 12th), un-ranked Hastings. But only lost to TRF by one goal... TRF and EGF played to a 2-1 final burning up that score board with those high powered offences from the north woods. Im sure that scoring punch is why they are ranked so high.
How about Alex (ranked 10th). They are beating power houses like North Wright, Sauk Rapids, and Sartell. Holy crap are they good. They did lose to Mound Westonka that is ranked currently in the 12 slot that beat SSP (ranked 14th). Which is slightly lower than their ranking of 10th currently , so that does makes sense. But these ranking are pretty accurate, computer glitch?. Mound Westonka (rank 12th) beat SSP (rank 14th) this year. No wait, they didn't beat SSP, my bad...but those rankings say they should of. Just going by what Bowhunter said that SSP is over ranked. Thanks Bowhunter you put me down the wrong path here. You must be messing with my mind. or you must be thinking of that deer you missed this fall.
Its still to early for anyone to draw conclusions on any ranking in my opinion. Though its fun to jump in on this, lets see in February were it shakes out.

Go back and read the entire thread...the comment was about the early ranking of Lakeville north.
They are definitely weaker because of graduation and other factors

Good points. Being ranked 6 through 20 in Single A is kind of like getting a ribbon for finishing 9th in a 10 person race. My apologies.

Heck if SSP can get to 8 wins this year they might keep their lofty ranking...Don't know if this is their worst team ever (lots of yrs to look at) coaching can only do so much, but they should enjoy it because next year

IFC...Most here know the proud history of SSP (aka title town)
My personal favorite part of SSP history is when the year after winning the AA State Tournament Palmquist drops down to A and wins that tourney the next year... Nice work!! Gutty way to defend title!! This team still gets more ink then most in paper and on The Hub purely due to history and coaches connections....Enjoy the old glory day memories because IMO they are over...
Enjoy the regular season!!

nu2hockey sounds like someone pissed in your Wheaties>..knucklehead? Is this where I say sticks and stones. Lets not make this a SSP thing. That's not my intention. The ranking system is a mystery to me, and that's my point in all this. Though it sounds like you have a personal issue with that program (maybe on the losing end I assume). I do like the dropping down point (AAADad). I found that a bit funny myself. But lets not get into that Blake/SPU/Breck/Hill argument about moving up , or down. I will say this, there is a lot of dynasties that we could pick on how they got there. You want more accurate rankings. I would look at the KRACH rankings. Looks like Spring Lake Park (AA 9th) could be title bound. Maybe its WB coming in at a 4 ranking just behind Hill and Edina>. None of these ranking formulas are too accurate this early. Glory days..not sure I follow that. Though Im not an expert on SSP history. They did have a state appearance last year. Is it over? One thing about girls hockey is that its very unpredictable, I think we all can agree on that I hope.
