After one period of play it's:
St. Paul United 1, Alexandria 0
Alex had a few good opportunities, including a breakaway, but SPU had a decided edge in play and lead in shots by a 17-7 margin.

Alex had a much better period, even outshooting United 9-7, but still trail 0-1 after two.

Final score:
St. Paul United 2, Alexandria 0
SPU took a penalty with 46 seconds left, giving the Cardinals a 6 on 4 advantage with their goalie pulled. But they didn't win the faceoff and the United ended up with the empty netter. A fun game to watch, though, as both teams gave it everything they had. SOG ended at 32-23.
A much tighter game than nearly everyone expected, with most thinking the game would be lopsided in the United's favor. All but one - the same one - got the winner right but again nobody got the score. So everybody - but one - is tied at 6 points heading into this evenings lower bracket play.

Just tuned in to the Blake/Luverne contest, and as expected it's not much of a contest. After two periods it's 6-0, and the third will go to running time. Shots on goal are an unbelievable 51-0.

Blake let up on the gas some in the 3rd period, and for Luverne it mercifully ended 10-0. They did get some cheers from the crowd when they got their first shot on goal, then No. 2 a few seconds later, but that was all she wrote. Final shots were 60-2.
The 10-0 score did produce some extra points for three of our contestants: Knight7, massalsa and sinbin all got it right and they move ahead of the pack by 2 points.

At the end of one no score in the Proctor/Hermantown - New Prague game. So far the Mirage has had the edge in play, outshooting the Trojans 8-2.

Mirage leads 2-1 after two periods. A very competitive, entertaining hockey game. Gophers are getting a good one in Catie Skaja, who went end-to-end and made a terrific move to score the Trojans' lone goal so far.
13 of our 20 contestants are hoping for a New Prague comeback in the 3rd...

No score after one in the first quarterfinal matchup between Eastview and Edina. Edina with a slight edge in possession and offensive pressure, but Eastview is very much hanging in there and doing a good job of limiting the Hornets' chances to the outside.

A great period of hockey for the Edina Hornets, but still no score. In the 2nd they outshot the Lighting 13-3, and unlike the 1st period many of those came from close range. Eastview's goalie Emma Tschida is playing one heck of a game.

Final score in the opening Class 2A game today:
Edina 1, Eastview 0
Emily Oden's goal midway through the 3rd period was all Edina needed to get past the Lightning in a tight, defensive battle. Anna Goldstein stopped all 17 Eastview shots to earn her shutout, while Emma Tschida stopped all but Oden's tally, coming up with 34 saves to keep the Lightning in it until the final buzzer. Congratulations to Eastview on a very well-played and determined effort today.
Good broadcast today on prep45.com - always fun to hear the colorful Pete Wagoneer do the play-by-play.
Edina's victory was anticipated by all but two in our group, but nobody expected it would be such a defensive, low-scoring game. So 19 pick up 3 points each in today's opening AA quarterfinal.

Eden Prairie with a 2-1 lead over Forest Lake after one. SOG are 10-7 Eagles. The game started with each team scoring within the first three minutes, which was more scoring than we saw in all 60 minutes of the game before.

After two periods it's tied at 2-2. Up until the very end of the period the Eagles controlled the play, outshooting Forest Lake 16-9, but Kaitlyn VanTassel scored the tying goal on a late power play which seemed to provide the Rangers with a needed spark, and they finished the period very strong.
The third period should be a real barnburner - both teams are giving it their all.

Eden Prairie 4, Forest Lake 2
Another excellent hockey game, showcasing lots of skill both ways. Final shots were 35-21, so the Rangers had their chances. Eden Prairie's Naomi Rogge was the only multipoint player on either team, with a goal and an assist.
19 of 21 favored the third seeded Eagles to advance to tomorrow's semifinal, and there were three who guessed the final score: Sparlimb, MNHockeyFan and rascalbrock each get the bonus.
Heading into this evening's lower bracket quarterfinals, here's the updated Leaderboard:

After one Hill Murray leads Sartell/Sauk-Rapids 2-0. It took longer that expected for the No. 1 seeded and No. 1 ranked Pioneers to get rolling, but they finally struck toward the end of the period on a power play goal by Laura Anderson with just 1:51 remaining. Kate Smith then scored with just 12 seconds left in the period. Shots on goal were a dominating 15-3.

The Pioneers add two more and it's 4-0 at the end of two. Shots are now 36-7.

The Pioneers tacked on one final goal with 1.0 seconds to play for a 5-0 quarterfinal win. Though outshot 50-9, the Storm'NSabres never quit and can hold their heads high.
All but one () add 3 points and wolfman, JohnnyBuck and hockey21 each add 2 more for predicting the 5-0 score. I'll post an updated standings following the Lakeville South/Maple Grove game, one I'm looking forward to.

Maple Grove and Lakeville South are tied at 1-1 after the first period. Goal scorers were Halle Gill for Lakeville South and Lauren Kaufman for the Crimson. Shots slightly favor the Cougars at 15-12.

Still tied at 1-1, and shots are almost as even at 27-26 with the Cougars holding a slight edge. Five penalties called in that period, but neither team could take advantage.
I have a feeling that the next goal just might win it?

What happened, I left and it was 1-1 after 2. MG was much better but still surprised by final score. I will say though, that there was so much diving in the late game tonight I thought I was at a swim meet. I sure hope those refs aren't doing tomorrow night's game. My goodness.
Hill looked really ordinary tonight. I was thoroughly unimpressed with their effort. I know they thought they could take it easy tonight, but they will need to play much better to beat the Crimson tomorrow night...

Maple Grove 4, Lakeville South 1
Taylor Wente scored the winning goal at 2:08 into the 3rd period, and Lauren Kaufman added two more after that to give her the hat trick and send the Crimson into tomorrow's semifinal against top-seeded Hill Murray. Coco Francis played a big part in Maple Grove's win, stopping 31 of the 32 shots that Lakeville South put on net.
The Crimson's empty-netter at the end wasn't good news for the five prognosticators who had it as a 3-1 game, but it was good news for massalsa and Hansenbrother who correctly forecasted 4-1.
Big day tomorrow with lots of points at stake. Until then, here is where things stand:
1. Sparlimb - 26
JohnnyBuck - 26
MNHockeyFan - 26
sinbin - 26
5. massalsa - 25

Warroad 2, St. Paul United 1 after one.
The Warriors started fast, scoring on the first two shots they took, then United responded with one of their own on a 5 on 3 power play.
Extremely troubling for Warroad is Mariah Gardner, their top scorer (and according to coach David Marvin their best player) went hard into the boards and needed assistance getting back to the bench. If she's not able to return it spells trouble for the Warriors.
