Janicke going to the NTDP is not all that surprising given his brother played there. MG is still loaded for the next couple of years with their B2B Bantam AA titles.

2 Gentry kids making the NTDP roster will make for great marketing material for that program.

Or a nail for the coffin. Had the 2003 (15) team played Varsity next year they would have leaped St. Thomas & Cretin to rival Hill-Murray. Instead they remain Class A and maybe an option for Bantam players looking for something different from their association.

They would have been in the mix to win state. You can't say that about STA or C-DH next year. Maybe Hill. I like what they have returning.

This is all moot. Gentry’s top team doesn’t play MSHSL. They play tier 1.

I can’t imagine Gentry would have anything close to the depth needed for this to be a reasonable take.

3 lines deep with 6 D and a very solid goalie. I'm sure you are netting out a kid or two from out of state that would not be MSHSL eligible, but I do not know enough about their circumstances to comment.

A lot of attention on their top kids, but I was very impressed because none of them are weak at all. There's no drop off as you get to the bottom of their line chart. All the players past their elite high end are proficient.

If they have that good a team returning, why would they not decide to opt up like most other privates and top end small end schools...cough cough....

Blueblood, obviously the focus is not going to be MSHSL Varsity. Two players are signed to move to Plymouth, Michigan and it does make you wonder where others land.

Westie, yes. If the students at the school played MSHSL. They have the players enrolled today to be a power next season. That is obviously not the plan.

I asked several people during the season what was going on at the school and nobody could conclusively answer. I think it is still unclear as I was told the school was sold. Will they field non-MSHSL teams of HS age players?

agree they fir sure could be competitive in A class under that scenario if all tier 1s played mshsl , top 5 in state probably , maybe top 3

Suspect Schimek will end up at STA where brother just graduated , he’s already got his D1 locked up . Not sure about rest , couldn’t hazard a guess

I think, total conjecture, that the reason the top team is tier 1 is that those players want to compete together for a full season as opposed to the mid-Nov thru Feb schedule of MSHSL. Same reason as Shattuck?

Hardly unprecedented, those in charge were controlling and creating an environment to accelerate the advancement of their kids. Nobody will argue that is has worked fine.

Fair enough. Comparison to Shattuck was more-so in that some parents feel, right or wrong, the benefit is in playing the longer season. Definitely not a great comparison eligibility-wise.

Boarding school students are eligible to participate in MSHSL activities. Both St. John’s Prep and Winona Cotter have boarding programs and are members of the MSHSL. Shattuck actively chose to leave the MSHSL for hockey in 1993 in order to raise their national profile and become a magnet for hockey players (the school had been financially struggling), and only recently left the MSHSL for its other sports.

That was indeed a bizarre situation. I believe the distinction is that the Northern Educate players were staying with billet families, and not in housing on a school campus. Minnesota has so few boarding schools compared to other traditional hockey states, and the issue rarely comes up. (Coincidentally, one of my classmates growing up boarded at Shattuck and played when they were rebuilding their program.)

Steering the conversation back away from my boarding school tangent, three players from Minnesota must be one of the smaller groups of players from the state in some time. There are a lot of players from non-traditional areas, seemingly even more than in recent years.

Thanks for the research! I wasn’t in a position to look it up and made a bad assumption. 2017 was a real anomaly.
