Not being a dink, thought it may have had to do with some convoluted MSHSL rule regarding using replay or jumbotrons. They tend to make a mess of simple things

Passed by the federal government in the early to mid-seventies said that women would have equal opportunity to play sports or any other activity for that matter. Seperate but equal gender opportunities. One of the reasons the U is having trouble funding everything. The females don't pay their way as they don't really have a fan base for tennis, women's hockey, volleyball, swimming and diving, fencing you get the idea and are usually subsidized by the "glamour" sports usually Football is the big contributor for most colleges. I know this isn't really the PC answer women's athletics advocates want to hear but hey it's an opinion board. Anyone have a better explanation for the young gent?

Edited by: <A HREF=

girls in sports

When I was in H.S. in the seventies there was NOTHING for the girls. The boys had a team for all sports. The girls had after school intermural sports and that was it. There were no competitions against other schools at all. Title IX fixed this. You are right that girls don't bring in big admission bucks but so what? Are you ready to pit swimming against football? Track vs. hockey? There are some sports that pull in money and some that don't. People will pay money to watch certain things and won't for others. I'm glad, since I have a daughter, that she can play sports and isn't just offered a cheerleader spot. (Nothing against cheerleaders) I'd just rather have my daughter ON the field instead of cheering for the participants.

diskman - where does anyone say that girls should not be able to participate in sports. I dont think anyone has a problem with them competing, its just that they dont need to be playing at the same venues as guys because as we all know they cant sell enough tickets. Also the replay thing is dumb. If guys hockey can make enough money to have instant replay lete them have it. I wonder with all the issues in high school sports why MSHSL wastes there time worrying about replays.

I agree with diskman. My experience was very similar. When I went to high schools the girls cheered for the boys and didnt do much else.

I think that is the reason we end up with such things as Title IX.

The idea behind Title IX is a good one. The execution of the idea is where we struggle sometimes.

When some one claims that girls are entitled to play in the same venue as boys just because the boys play there and they want to also is a perfect example of such a struggle.

I think most people are bored with replay. I used to be in favor of it but after all these years of watching sports, I think it detracts more than it adds.

I graduated in the early 70's in a metro suburban school district in a class of over 500 kids (school had over 1,600) before Title IX. It was before girl's sports were added. (Well, there might have been in-house gymnastics) They started adding girl's sports right after I graduated. I'm not kidding when I say there was NOTHING. It's hard to believe that things were so UNEQUAL back then.

I would never agree that everything should be completely equal. The venue should be based on the fan base- period. The girls have no business playing in the Xcel - just my opinion. I don't think we have to trash Title IX to bring some common sense to it - that's all.

as someone who was in band in high school, id just like to say how angry everyone was that we had to go to equal numbers of all sports (yet we had to go to every home football game)

Hockey is the only sport the band kids actually wanted to go to. My freshman year at hill we went to about 15 hockey games, including tournaments. Now the band only goes to section games. The christmas tournament was so much fun (aside from one of our members playing taps after the loss to roseville!) The band should be required to go!

Nice posts diskman, I agree with your posts. I also agree with packerboy that title ix was a good idea. It's too bad it took legislation to allow the girls participation in these sports instead of it evolving, much like boys sports. Then once legislation got introduce and passed allowing girls participation into sports over zealous parents get lawyers involved to uphold the law and sometimes to create new laws (by judges who legislate from the bench). Once that happens all common sense, like air in a leaky balloon, escapes from the original legislation. BTW, I don't like lawyers. <img src=

I was just giving the origins of title IX for the young fella and added what has been talked about in the cities liberal rag we get up here. They are making it sound as if the U has had trouble funding everything everybody wants, is that a fair statement? I do recall pictures from the twenties and thirties of the local HS GBB teams but something went haywire I think they call it WWII and women's athletics kind of went by the wayside. Looking back at my dad's '59 Rambler it looks to me that cheerleading, music and VICA were the only outlets for the girl's they seemed to all have smiles on their faces maybe they just didn't know any better. diskman your tidy whiteys seem alittle tight; I don't think you have the corner on your household being affected positively with this as I have a female college athlete in the house but Knowlze has a good point - someone always has to try to take that second mile. What is good for the Goose isn't always good for the Gander. The Excel is I believe case in point. Finally, diskman the funding IS the issue; it isn't so what. Why should the MALE sports teams that are profitable have to fund the female teams for a school or any other activity, male or female? Is that fair and Title IX is supposedly based on fairness.

Edited by: <A HREF=

Profitable college teams HAVE to fund those that aren't profitable or else there would be no college hockey and really every other sport. How many D1 college hockey teams turn a profit? Not many, outside of UND, Minnesota, Wisconsin make any money at all. For instance, at Notre Dame football funds every sport, that's why they stay independant. A few years ago the NCAA put out a report about profitable sports and where the money goes, by and large given the NCAA's rules for how many schools have to field teams for it to be considered a sport there would only be 3 D1 sports; football, and men's and women's basketball. Football would have about a 1/3 less teams than now, women's basketball would have about 3/4 less and men's basketball would be about the same.

Did anyone else notice the Strib's article on womens hockey? It mentioned that average attendance is about 1,000, that's tickets sold, not butts in the seats. How can the Strib, or any other news outlet justify paying a reporter to cover them? Title IX doesn't apply to newspapers does it? I can't get a high school football score from a game where 5,000 people attend, but I can read all about the U of M women playing hockey in front of an empty building.

Renegade Ram -
I don't know why you would think that my whiteys are tidy (although I'd like to think they are fairly clean) I'm not sure why you would think my whiteys are TIGHTY either! My comments agreed with you. I think some common sense needs to be brought to the rule.

I stand by my comments about track vs. football or swimming vs. hockey though. I don't think you can base the value of the sport on how much cash it brings in. This comment has nothing to do with gender equity. I'm pretty sure that the boy's cross country team does not bring in big dough but I think that it is just as important to provide this sport as it is to provide a revenue raiser like football.

Obviously, you cannot provide every sport, choices must be made - common sense again!

Goldy, State Cloud State's men's hockey program should be included with the Division 1 hockey teams that make a profit. The profits from the men's hockey team help fund other college sports at SCSU....just wanted to clarify.

I suppose you ran around with an ERA button on to impress the chicks and peeked in on the bra burnings so prevelant at the time, you probably hid your subscription to Ms. magazine from your buddies inside a Playboy. My point is life isn't fair, if it was we would all make the same money, we'd all dress alike and we'd all have the same level of education - Pol Pot tried that it didn't work. It's a pretty sad testament about our society that FAIRNESS has to be legislated. Title IX revolves around legislated fairness and it ain't right.....I believe goldy is the one who preaches take sports out of the schools and keep them in the community. Would the car dealer who wants to pony up for the the 15 - 18 year old baseball team want or have to pony up for the same aged softball team - shouldn't have to if it doesn't interest him And if the local 15 - 18 year old hockey team that was sponsored by several businesses and actually may turn a profit have to share those profits with the local girls team of the same age, I don't think so. The problem is if these activities were taking place anywhere but the school system and they did exist in many successful forms prior to the godlike MSHSL's creation, this issue wouldn't even be discussed. Thank goodness for the MSHSL, they wrecked the best HS tourney in the World by splitting it to placate some gal from Albany and they caved to a bunch of Girl Hockey player parents from a team that didn't even make the tourney. Let's just give all the good little boys and girls a medal just for getting up in the morning, it's only fair....<img src=

I used to be in the GR band. One of favorite things in the world was going to HS hockey games. Man I have great memories of the IRC Civic center both being in the band as a high schooler and being a little kid in the seats. When they would hit the first note for "Knock on Wood" with that screaming trumpet part and smashing low brass... gives me chills even now.

Having said that... GR19 - Title IX had NOTHING to do with the band not being able to play all of the home hockey games. It had a lot more to do with parental pressure and what the school district thought was fair play. My source.... one Band Director. Now I'm not saying I agree completely. I never missed a hockey game, but I could have cared less to go to the Boys Basketball Games. I haven't been back to see a GR game in a long time, but my parents finally got rid of their tickets (they were originally my grandfathers and they've been in the family for years). One of their big reasons for getting rid of their season tickets was because the atmosphere is so different. <img src=

Nothing to do with it, how about I send you emails I got from the current band director and current A.D. Wayne Pender. Title 9 has everything to do with it according to them. The AD didn't say for sure, but suggested I would have to pay for the band to go to all HS semi-finals if I write a check for them to go to Duluth for the boys hockey semi-finals.

BTW, I love "Championship"!!!

I'd love to see them. I haven't seen Wayne in a while, but I'm sure I'll see him at the tree lot this year. I just talked to Gundy ohhh a month ago at the Irondale Competition. I mentioned it to him and it is about funding. They would love to go to all the games but it isn't feasible because parents of other sports don't think it is fair, not just girls' sports which when you say Title IX I assume you are referring to. Now if you are not connecting Title IX and women's athletics mea culpa.
