While I agree to an extent in regard to "you get what you put into it"....I know kids who attended when it was $16K per year and kids who attend now that it's free and each have said that the curriculum is not challenging at all. It's a hockey school, that's how it was started and that's how it is. It's fine if that's what you want for your kid but people are being intellectually dishonest if they say it's for education. If you're a college admissions office how are you going to view a 4.0 student at a Breck, Blake, BSM, Providence, H-M, SPA, Mounds View, Wayzata or Edina versus a 4.0 at....Gentry Academy.
How many people have told you they went there for the Education?
Who plays hockey at Hill-Murray "for the education"?

Who plays basketball at Hopkins "for the education"?

Who transfers to IMG Academy in Florida to play football "for the education"?

Obviously, many college admissions offices like the U of Minnesota and Wisconsin are fine with these situations, which don't even include kids playing junior hockey and taking HS distance courses.

Let's not be naive. It's 2021.
JG I do agree there are some who go to HM, et al just for hockey but I know a lot of friends who send their kids there because they would be sending their kids to private/Catholic school regardless...and the great hockey surely was part of the decision but I can say the private school education matters for people too.

It's about the kids and from what I hear, they have good kids that are playing great hockey. I'm looking forward to their section games and good hockey. GB

Hill and Hopkins are actually both very good schools in terms of education...I wouldn't trust any educational institute in Florida

Has anyone on this board seen this team play in person? Are they good enough to knock off Hermantown and all of their transfers and open-enrollees? It sounds like this could be a great game if these two meet up!

They are good enough to pull that off. It should be a good game if that ends up being the championship.

I'm pondering if we should combine the two threads, given the anticipated number of posts which cross over from one side (be it Hermantown or Gentry) to the other. We could always re-split the topics if/when one or both move up to AA.

:D I will do my best to keep my comments primarily Gentry-focused, as I know the penalties for not doing so.

Upon further investigation into the Gentry roster, I'm seeing Shoreview, Grand Forks, Edina, North Oaks, Lake Elmo, Maplewood, Minneapolis, Coon Rapids, and Stillwater as the hometowns of the top players. And the player from Vancouver is from Vancouver WA, not Vancouver, BC, so there goes the international angle.
Looks a lot like recent HM roster hometowns! :P

You'll be surprised at the quality of high school education. Districts are by county so the resources are vast. Within the bigger counties schools offer a magnet program open to anyone in the district. Just using Orange county as an example, here are the options:

4 Schools - International Baccalaureate
Edgewater - STEM
Oak Ridge - Entrepreneurship, Aviation, Digital Media/Gaming
Dr. Phillips - Drama & Music, International Studies
Wekiva - Culinary, Agriculture, Laser Photonics
Apopka - Engineering, Medical
Boone - Law
Evans - Music Production
East River - First Responders
Jones - Medical
University - Performing Arts
Colonial - Veterinary

https://www.ocps.net/departments/school ... t_programs

I know two families that pulled their daughters out of Lake Highland Prep, considered the top private school in the area, because they academics weren't as challenging as Orange County schools. One went IB at Winter Park and another STEM at Edgewater...which was a D-rated school at the time. Which is meaningless for the students in the magnet programs.

Stanton & Paxon in Jacksonville same thing. You can go around the state and find this is the case wherever people live.

Honest question because I do not know the answer...
Does Gentry still have a Tier 1 2003 team?
If no, are the 2003 tier 1 players who are still at Gentry now on the Gentry High School team?

No, several of the highest end players are currently at NTDP or in USHL.

Yes, some players from that Tier 1 team are now on the HS team.

Serious questions because I do not know the answers:

1. Is the current Gentry team likely to be the last really talented Gentry squad that will be able to realistically compete for a State Championship trophy? Or do they have a pipeline and strategy in place which will enable them to compete long term?

2. Or will they likely lose their best players, either to graduation or other developmental options, that their best will likely pursue, so that the team will likely take a step backwards next year?

3. Looking into the future, and considering academics, will Gentry continue to be a viable option for the best high school players who aim to play at the next level? (i.e. another Shattuck St. Mary's)

While Gentry might be doing everything "by the book" the whole concept still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Outside of them following the rules why should I not feel that way even once they're moved to AA?

If it's a Hermy vs Gentry final, I have a feeling a whole lot of people will be giving up their northern roots for Gentry. :)

Not sure if Gentry will make it.
They have Maht in the way.

But if they do, we can always hope they both get knocked off in the state semis.
Even if that possibility is low. :?

Everyone thought that with Hermantown/Alexandria three years ago. It can happen!

The Boys HS Hockey season is quickly coming to an end, and I still haven't gotten over to see my neighbor's kid play (for Gentry) :(

GA's last six games, and a projected margin of victory based on the latest (LSQRANK) computer rating profile on March 01st are:

by 10 goals vs. Simley (TUES Mar 02 @ TCO) 7:30 pm
by 11 goals vs. North Branch (THUR Mar 04 @ TCO) 7:00 pm
by 8 goals vs. St.Paul Johnson (SAT Mar 06 @ Phalen) 7:00 pm
by 9 goals vs. St.Cloud Cathedral (TUES Mar 09 @ MAC) 7:00pm
by 14 goals vs. Minnehaha Academy (THUR Mar 11 @ MHHA) 7:00 pm
by 9 goals vs. Southwest Christ/Rich (SAT Mar 13 @ Richfield) 7:00pm

Yep. Mike Max said it on 'CCO last night regarding the Chaska girls basketball team. From here on out, coaches and players have an incentive to not get tested because if they do, the quarantine rules will extend into Sections and cause teams to forfeit their season.

Congrats to Gentry on proving that when you recruit the top players from around the state and the country to come to your school just to play hockey, it ends up working out for you -_-

If you look at Mahtomedi's roster this year and the past few years, they also have players from several communities. So nice try with the blaming because they are private. A top program private or public, in both A and AA don't need to recruit. Players show up because they want to be a part of a winning program with strong players. Players leave top programs also if they are say 3rd line and move to communities where they will get top line action (see 2 transfers on Maht). The narrative on this forum of top programs recruiting is really old. Also the poor Maht sediment on this particular one is ironic considering the number of players that have moved in to play for this school for over a decade.

I don't think they're equal. I'm sure privates recruit more because they don't have a feeder program, but I also think public supporters don't want to look in depth as to how much public schools outsource. Having said that, it was AWESOME to see Mahtomedi beat Hermy last year! 8)
