Im not sure. It was the issue that ranked Edina the 9th best high school sports program in the nation. Still trying to track down the numbers though.

HM versus WBL... no contest... year after year, people interested in the HM/WBL game outnumber the entire populations of Roseau and Warroad, together.

i agree with Grand Rapids vs. Greenway as well. Wish it could be what it used to be, but there's always hope. I was trying to find a complete history of the rivalry on the internet but there is none available unless I just couldn't find it.

Another big one for two communities in Central Minnesota is River Lakes and Willmar


I agree about the coaches, but willmar's rival is without doubt litchfield, fights break out, things are thrown on the ice, and ppl get arrested. River Lakes is just a neighboring team

Just to throw it out there, it appears mound doesn't even have their own team. It appears to be co-oped with westonka. Or is that just the name of the school?

Mound-Westonka is the name of their school bud, its been like that for years. Mound and Orono have a pretty intense rivalry, go to one of the games and you will see why the rivalry is up on the board

Based on the posts on this board over the years, Roseau-Warroad and East-Cloquet are the two biggest. I was a little disappointed last year by the lack of name calling when East and Cloquet met up but for the most part it's been bad enough where Mitch and Lee have to block a couple of threads.

It's a bit of a conundrum for me to pick the best metro area rivalry, from the games that I've been to I'd say WBL-Hill Murray and Kennedy-Jefferson. I'd have to give the edge to the Bloomington schools, the game that I went to a couple of years ago had an edge and intensity that I haven't seen at many games. The true test of a rivalry to me is how intense it is when there's nothing else on the line.

A couple of others that I've found to be good are WBL-Roseville and Apple Valley-Eastview.

Well, if you want the rivalries between teams that have "nothing else on the line," go north then, as you say. Or watch any class A.

At the River Lakes scrimmages willmar went 4-0 defeating riverlakes, prarie center, marshall, and hutch also they beat wadena last night

I will bet you that a regular season game between Rochester Century and Rochester John Marshall get more attendance than any of the rivalries you have listed. I mean whats better than an inner city rivalry. And before someone tries tellin me H.M vs WBL gets more save yourself the argument because i have been to 2 of there games in my life and its not even close.

We are sitting here going back and forth on this and I'm just curious what everyone defines as a rivalry? I personally would define it as two teams where lots of people come to the games regardless of how good the teams are and they play often. For example, I would say Marshall and East (both Duluth) may be rivals in sports, but they can't be in hockey cuz they never play.

Rilvaries and either be old and never ending... (Grand Rapids-Greenway, Duluth East-Cloquet) or new and upcoming (Grand Rapids-Cloquet, Duluth East-Elk River)...at any rate...games where teams hate eachother, and a lot of people show up...

Breck- Blake its a classic, coaches are good, players are top of the line, fans are crazy, etc,

This might not be a huge rivalry YET, but anyone else think STA vs DM is gaining some big interest especially for A. 3rd place game at state in 05, Championship in 06, recent tie between #1 and #2, and who know what this years state tourney could hold if both teams keep playing the way they do. There is bad blood between the 2 schools.

Why u gotta rip on Class A? there just as goodof players as Class AA

Roseau and Warroad NOT even on the list. That is funny!! Those two schools have been battling with each other before some of the teams on your list even knew what a hockey puck was. Both rinks are packed by the second period of the JV game. Both towns shut down pretty much.

And to top that off you don't even list Greenway and Rapids wich is just as big as Roseau and Warroad. You city fellas should get up north and see some real rivalries.

yea thats one puzzles me why Warroad-Roseau isnt on the list also i could go as far as to say Hibbing-Virginia or Hibbing-Grand Rapids are some great rivalries.
