Guess who has grounded into more over the past two years - Thomas or Kubel?
Kubel ABs: 638
Thomas ABs: 997
Kubel GDP: 22
Thomas GDP: 27
Average at-bats per GDP
Kubel: 29
Thomas: 37
You gotta be kidding me Govs... do you want me to do HRs too? (Kubel every 30, Thomas every 15)
You guys can talk about how before his injury all day, Thomas was a helluva hitter before he got old. Thomas is still a pretty damn good hitter which is exactly what the Twins could use.
And potential? If you are in the show, you should be able to show something. Potential is for the minors, in the majors you gotta produce.

Is Thomas in the show?
This whole argument has been for naught anyway... we were all proven wrong by Craig Monroe last night. That's the guy we need.

It might be time to give our buddy CarGo a day or two off as well. Let Denard roam around out in center for a couple of days, as PB says put Tolbert at the top of the order, and let Gomez get some time to figure out what's going on.
As bad as he's been recently, he may have reached a new low last night - if your leadoff man is fanning 4 times in a game and dragging his average down to .230, it's time to make some adjustments.

You will recall that it as suggested here that Cargo wasnt ready for the big show yet and that there was a concern he would be in over his head.
He is in over his head but if they need to keep him here, bat him 9th and take some presure off him.
Whether he is ready for the majors is open for discussion but he sure as heck isnt ready for the responsibility of lead off hitter.
Nice win for our boys.
Now they are all square and.................. let's see, what would rhyme with that...hmm, I'll think of something later.
How huge is it if Monroe can make a substantial contribution?

If Monroe goes 0x3 with a walk, they lose. It's that simple.
I'm not looking for gawdy numbers from the Twins peripheral players, just contributions. Monroe contributed last night.
Maybe tonight Lamb or Tolbert or Kubel can hit a gap with men on. Maybe Delmon can connect for a 3 run shot.
Obnoxious tears not necessary, periodic contributions by several, YES.

What about Delmon leading off?
Swisher has never struck me as a leadoff guy but he is doing a fine job for the Sox.

Nix on DY as lead off, at least for now.
He isnt that fast and he is a free swinger and he is being groomed for a #5 or even #3 slot. He may not ever be that but they will give it some time to see.
I always say put your fastest player with the best OBP there. I think that is Tolbert right now.
We talked about the inability of Cargo to steal first when they put him #1 and that has come home to roost. Its only 20 games but I would have a concern about Cargo losing some confidence. Get him in the 9 hole.
The other option would be Span which is how I thought they should start the season but then Cargo would sit and that isnt going to happen.

I don't know, it's why I'm asking.
Can you groom a guy to become a productive 3/4 hitter at the MLB level?

I think he already is. He was able to drive in just under 100 RBI's as a rookie for the boofin' Devil Rays. The kid has it. I don't particularly have the answer for what his problem currently is - maybe he's still getting acclimated to the new team and area, maybe he (or Vavra) is tinkering with his swing, maybe he's focused more and getting himself together off the field - who knows.
Like I say, he already has it in him to be a productive #3 or #5, but he just has to figure it out up here. It'll happen.

I think you can if he has the tools. The approach is a little diferent when you are in the 3, 4,5, spot so thats what I mean by being groomed for that. I dont think they want DY thinking like a lead off hitter.
But no, you cant groom Jason Tyner to be a 3,4 hitter.

They steal from us on a regular basis. Its shameful.
The good analysis and stuff appears here on the bored and then it shows up in the paper the next day or on some political button.
The big write up about last night's game in the Red Star today focuses on the woeful offfense and how inconsistent they are and especially vs average pitchers. Oh really? Where did they get that scoop?
Right here in the Cafe is where.

Most days there just isn't much to talk about as the boys are Ho humming along at 1 under.
Twins can't consistenly hit, they score 1 or less 29% of the time. When Boof throws well he gets zero support, when he throws bad they score 4-5 by the fifth. Hey, he's replaced Silva from last year.
This season needs some magic, some sizzle, some lead changes during the game. Tuesday was interesting, the Detroit game last week was a tough loss but at least there was some action. The Saturday game with CLE, what a snoozer, I'm sure the country enjoyed that one.
Go Twins.

Boof is 2-16 in his last 18 decisions. Why you ask?
The Twins have scored 3 runs or less in 27 of Boof's last 35 starts.

If you are going to put an team on the field with as many offensive holes as the Twins you better have Koufax, Drysdale, Gibson, Ryan and Clements for your rotation.
Mere "quality starts" are not good enough when you do not

HR's- 28th
Triples-25th
Doubles-24th
Runs-27th
Hits-23rd
OBP-30th
Slugging-27th
RBI's-26th
Total bases-29th
BB-30th (10 teams have double the number they do)

opposing pitchers have no fear of throwing balls over the plate against this lineup.
SB-4th yippee!
