Glen's recruits made it to bowl games when Glen the Great coached them.
Floyd would have been a good start. He was open to the U until the Catholics got a hold of him.

Glens conference record was 1-7and 2-6 his first two years.

I agree PB.
Even if it turns out that the Brewmeister is a great recruiter, He can't coach.
But it certainly looks like a severe downhill slope.

I think the thing that makes it even worse is that nobody was really surprised by this loss... many people picked NDSU to win.
I even found myself pulling for NDSU a little (if it was UND, I never would have done that). I like the way they play, and that win means far more for their program and fans than it would for Minnesota. This series is a lose-lose for the Gophers. Maturi blew it when he scheduled it.

North Daboofinkota. I like it.

Why is it that struggling progams always hire these guys who talk loud and seem fired up when they go to talk to the noonday Lions or the Rotary Club? I know, they are high energy guys on the exterior and they interview well. Here's a suggestion to AD's and University presidents everywhere, read the resume and tune out the dog and pony show during the interview.
Great coaches and leaders of people aren't always reincarnated furniture salesmen.

We decide to fire Mason. OK fine, we are sick of being average.
But we hire an unknown guy who has never been a head coach because he sounds like he can sell an icebox to an Eskimo.
Well, we got our wish because we aren't average anymore.

Unknown, that's exactly the problem. When "Coach for Life" got fired my only request was get someone who has had success elsewhere as the headmaster. Div II fine, Div III fine, NAIA fine, Ivy league fine, what do they find? A smooth talking, flesh pressing extraverted tight ends coach.

They hired a recruiter and we all knew it. I'm much more concerned with the quality of HIS recruits than the win loss record. If he can sell icebox's to eskimos everything will be fine. If he can't, get a rope.

I'd like to see how he sells a 1-11 season - including losses to NDSU & FAU, and barely getting their one win against an "inferior" team in triple OT.
Ice to eskimos may not be good enough.

If you cant coach, you wont be able to recruit.
But is the head coach that important in recruiting? Should he be?
Was Woody Hayes a good recruiter? Bo? Bear?
Its hard to believe that those guys made it on their recruiting skills.

I would've liked to have seen Woody Hayes's recruiting method.
Something like: "You better come and play for me or I'll kill ya!!!
You think?

Actually they probably did have good recruiting skills for the time. I don't know about Woody but I've seen clips of Bo and Bear in interviews and they seemed like guys who could hold a nice conversation in the living room with mom and dad which is the way they had to do it back then. Of course, they had great programs and could have 70+ guys on the roster so if someone didn't work out they could easily replace him.
Back in February or whatever Brewster seemed like an OK hire, a young guy with a lot of enthusiasm. Now he looks like Jim Wacker 2, except that Wacker actually had some success coaching at the college level prior to taking the Gophers job.
They'll have to improve next year because they can't get much worse. If they don't, Brewster will have to go as I think we can tolerate one year of horrific football in the hopes that things will get better but two years of this is more than anyone can stomach. So the third year will be the key and if we don't see some hope that Brewster can build a team with Rose Bowl potential the spotlight will have to swing to Maturi. Right now this looks like a terrible hire and Maturi should take the fall too if it doesn't work out.
Let's hope Tubby works out better for the basketball team...

If Brewster doesn't work out, Tubby will probably be what saves Maturi.
It's all about timing.

Chrisk, you crack me up.
You were a card carrying member of the "Fire Mason" crowd and now its "we cant tolerate this much longer ".
The "Fire Mason" crowd is now huddling in a corner mumbling something about how we should have hired someone better and looking to Tubby to save the face of U athletics.
Incredible. You couldnt wait to pull the trigger on Mason while others said "Maybe Mason is holding this thing together with bubblegum and spit and if someone else took over , we might go in the tank"
Now its "Fire Brewster".
Great. Thanks alot.

Let it go? Are you kidding me, its fuel for the fire for months.
But here is a qoute from our pal Chrisk on the subject:
Things have gotten so negative with Mason that a cardboard cutout of Vince Lombardi would be better........
A new coach would have a honeymoon period of a year or two to get things going. Look at the Vikings, the difference between the Tice-coached teams and this year's team, a good coach won't need that long to change the climate and start attracting talented players to come here...........
I think this Chrisk character, who ever he is, actually works at the U as an advisor in the ADs office.
Let it go Govs says. Thats a good one

What are you saying here packerboy, you want Mason back? Think about it, he had two of the best young NFL running backs in Maroney and Barber and the best he could do was a 3 loss season. The program needs someone who can give them a shot at the Rose Bowl and every year the Mason coached teams found a game or two to choke away.
The key to my quote was "good coach", Maturi needed to hire a good coach. He hired a good recruiter or so we've been told but right now he doesn't look like a good coach, though talent likely has something to do with that. Will he be able to recruit the talent and know how to use it if he gets it? Who knows, but this team will have to show a glimmer of life next year because they are flatlined on the table right now.

Oh no you dont. All of you "fire Mason" people are now running for cover under the "well, but we wanted Maturi to hire someone better" spin.
Thats why a lot of us were opposed to firing Mason Chris... because there was a whole lot of concern over whether it would go the other way.
There was no good reason to believe that we could get anyone better.
In the effort to "get a shot at the Rose Bowl" , the only shot is the one that is went directly into Maturi's foot.

So what you're saying is you were happy with the mediocrity that was Mason and I'm happy for you.
I know it was a gamble and there was a good chance the program would have a downswing but Brewster could total the car before getting it out of the garage. You can call it spin all you want but Maturi needed to make a good, careful choice. Instead he gambled on someone who was a good recruiter and it's not looking good right now. Now Brewster probably deserves a chance to get his recruits in but if things continue to be this awful next year I don't know how you can keep him on.

You want spin, here's some.
The Gophers are just as good this year as they were under Mason, the problem is everyone else is better, that includes those MAC schools they were playing when the weather was warmer.

winning games is one of the top components of recruiting.
hmmmm

People who didnt want to fire Mason were not , for the most part, in love with the guy nor were they happy with Dec 26 Bowl games.
But the idea that we could fire Mason and get a guy in here who was going to bring in recruiting classes that rival the USCs and the OSUs of the world is fantasy.
If you wish to engage in fantasy, I am happy for you.
But they just lost to North Daboofinkota and 2 MAC teams. The program has found a new low.
It could be as low as any Big 10 team has ever fallen.
How long will it take now to get back to the dreaded mediocrity that was Mason and , 30 years before him, Cal Stoll.
