Awful coaching by Saterdal. By the time they *recognised* what Spehar was doing the game was over. Only Edina managed to not allow a Spehar breakaway.WendyClark wrote:That was a beauty, one of the greatest days of my life, thanks for the memories AngusAngusYoung wrote:Duluth East 5

Not only that Bader, but I think most clubs wouldn't mind a 4th place finish down @ the Big Show!BIAFP wrote:Nostalgic Nerd wrote:I think when International Falls beat GR in section finals. GR at the time was at or near #1 ranked in 1989. IF really blew wind at state.
Most 7-0 wins are not upsets
No doubt one of the big ones from up north. Here's some i can think of off the top of my head..........roblee wrote:id have to say one of this years biggest upsets was when the eveleth golden bears made the long trip up to the falls and defeated a very strong broncos team, it was a big shock especially to us falls faithful
Reggie Miricle was his name I believe. A real miricle win.Hockeyguy_27 wrote:Columbia Heights shut out Edina 2-0 in the early 80's and their goalie had something like 60 shots. This was quite the upset.
And this is considered a big upset...underdogdave wrote:one thing real apparent in this tourny.the boys from up north can slow down the southern boys with there checking and great posistion play.
1971 featured a Ram team that had Mike Broten on the first line which had walked through Region 8 outscoring their opponents 21-3. In the Championship game Edina forward Rick Wineberg picked up a loose puck behind the Roseau D on a line change and went in alone for the 1-0 game winner. Roseau appeared to have scored, only to have it waved off by the officials.hm88 wrote:greenway1969 edina never beat roseau in the late 90s, in 1997 edina beat hill-murray in the semis and went on to beat duluth east 1-0. The other was to the Grand Forks Central Indians who went on to be the ND state champions that year.
Maybe not an upset, but having been shortly after the Henry Boucha incident, and that freshly in the mind of the fans, definetly a let down and much talked about game for the Met Center fans that year.
That was Edina West in its last year before the schools merged. They were #1 in the state. Down a goal (I think 2-1) in the waning moments, they scored but were whistled offside. The Cougars never won a title. The saying went:Fargo wrote:Reggie Miricle was his name I believe. Columbia Heights did beat Edina in the 1983 state quarterfinals behind the goaltending of Reggie Miracle and the play of sophomore defenseman D.J. Haller. This was also the second year of the Edina schools being combined again. Edina West played in the tournament in 1981 - their last season as a school.O-townClown wrote:That was Edina West in its last year before the schools merged. They were #1 in the state. We skated fine
no one over line
West would've won

For another top-ranked-Edina-loses-to-a-hot-goalie, go with #1 ranked Hornets in the Section Semi to a thin Richfield team featuring Damian Rhodes in net. The state tournament was going to be won that year by Edina, Hill-Murray, or Burnsville (eventual repeat champions led by Bloom and Osiecki). Richfield had Rhodes, small Center Mark Johnson, super defenseman Tim Potter, rugged Trent Makowski, and the role playing Jutting twins and not much else.
They followed up the upset with another Rhodes gem in the final and made the state tournament by beating Minnetonka.
What ever happened to Corey Carlson? Didn't he transfer in from TH...boblee wrote:December 7th, 2001
Grand Rapids 4, #1 Greenway 3 OT
Brian Wickstrom from Mark Columbus for the winner. The Greenway team featured Gino Guyer, Andy Sertich, and Corey Carlson. The three combined would tally 211 points in the regular season.
