Awful coaching by Saterdal. By the time they *recognised* what Spehar was doing the game was over. Only Edina managed to not allow a Spehar breakaway.

I think when International Falls beat GR in section finals. GR at the time was at or near #1 ranked in 1989. IF really blew wind at state.

Most 7-0 wins are not upsets

Not only that Bader, but I think most clubs wouldn't mind a 4th place finish down @ the Big Show!

No doubt one of the big ones from up north. Here's some i can think of off the top of my head..........

-Eveleth 3-2 over I'falls. To make the two hour bus ride up to the canadien border and score 3 on Hjelle on just i believe something like 22 shots is impressive. These two teams played a month before at the Historical Eveleth Hippodrome with Falls winning 6-0

-Greenway 5-4 over Virginia. Need i say more. What happened? Greenway was up 5-1 at one point i believe. Another one i missed.

-Burnsville 6-4 over Holy Angels. Who can beat the Academy of Holy Angels was the question. These kids came in as huge underdogs and played with tremendous heart. This one gets mine for best of 06-07.

Columbia Heights shut out Edina 2-0 in the early 80's and their goalie had something like 60 shots. This was quite the upset.

1971 featured a Ram team that had Mike Broten on the first line which had walked through Region 8 outscoring their opponents 21-3. In the Championship game Edina forward Rick Wineberg picked up a loose puck behind the Roseau D on a line change and went in alone for the 1-0 game winner. Roseau appeared to have scored, only to have it waved off by the officials. This was only the second loss for that Roseau team. The other was to the Grand Forks Central Indians who went on to be the ND state champions that year.

Maybe not an upset, but having been shortly after the Henry Boucha incident, and that freshly in the mind of the fans, definetly a let down and much talked about game for the Met Center fans that year.

=P~ Look folks!

=P~ It's like a lotta folks were saying when the Rams beat the Spuds in TRF for the Section 8AA 2007 Title 1-0!

=P~ "That game was the real AA State Championship game of 2007"!

=P~ Not many thought that the Rams would defeat the Spuds prior to that day let alone shut 'em out!

=P~ Kurt Weston begged to differ!

=P~ And with the placement of Lee in goal the smothering Rams D had come of age!

=P~ Two great AA teams ranked in the top four in the state from the same section?

=P~ Section 8AA fans knew that game would have been a "huge upset" either way!

=P~ "Redskins", "Indians", doesn't matter much!

=P~ I wonder if the ACLU would have a problem if a team were to be called the "twinkies"!

=P~ As "unhealthy" as they are supposed to be for ya!

that was a good one, Faupel had a great game......But I'd have to say the 1999 state tourny when Hastings came back and beat Blaine, scoring 2 goals in the last 30 seconds.

Grand Rapids 4, #1 Greenway 3 OT

Brian Wickstrom from Mark Columbus for the winner. The Greenway team featured Gino Guyer, Andy Sertich, and Corey Carlson. The three combined would tally 211 points in the regular season.

That was Edina West in its last year before the schools merged. They were #1 in the state. Down a goal (I think 2-1) in the waning moments, they scored but were whistled offside. The Cougars never won a title. The saying went:

We skated fine
no one over line
West would've won
in Overtime

For another top-ranked-Edina-loses-to-a-hot-goalie, go with #1 ranked Hornets in the Section Semi to a thin Richfield team featuring Damian Rhodes in net. The state tournament was going to be won that year by Edina, Hill-Murray, or Burnsville (eventual repeat champions led by Bloom and Osiecki). Richfield had Rhodes, small Center Mark Johnson, super defenseman Tim Potter, rugged Trent Makowski, and the role playing Jutting twins and not much else.

They followed up the upset with another Rhodes gem in the final and made the state tournament by beating Minnetonka.

January, 1981.  Roseau Memorial. Roseau 7 Edina East 6 in OT. Edina led 6-0 after 2 periods. Roseau scores 6 in the third to tie. Game Over.

Columbia Heights did beat Edina in the 1983 state quarterfinals behind the goaltending of Reggie Miracle and the play of sophomore defenseman D.J. Haller. This was also the second year of the Edina schools being combined again. Edina West played in the tournament in 1981 - their last season as a school.
