Do you guys have a coach at Breck yet?

Yogi,

Joe is a very good player. Maybe not as good as Birk, but no question they are going to be a better team with all of the 10th graders and better goalie. It's going to be a fun year![/quote]

Guess the Gophers like "Birk" better too. Read it at the following link:

Congrats to Birkholz and the Gophers. He has really come along way and truly is a gifted player. To bad he couldn't get in to Breck and follow in his Brothers footsteps and had settle with being a BEAR!

Breck is still interviewing. Sounds like they have several quality candidates including the current Co-Head Coach. My guess is they will name someone by the end of September.

Starting a rumor that he "couldn't" get into Breck is NOT cool because it is 100% B.S. He wanted to attend Blake. The coach has a strong history of developing good players and getting kids into D1 programs. Its just simply a better school  Learning the Swedish language is not a requirement for playing hockey either. :P

 Wow. A little sensitive. It's not a rumor that he tried to get into Breck before landing at Blake. It's not Birk's fault, his brother was there, but there just wasn't a spot open when he applied. Blake's gain, Breck's loss. Good luck this year.

We all know how hard it has been over the years for Breck to get a good hockey player in.....

Since then, they haven't attracted the same caliber players. I believe that is what he was getting at. They no longer have the afore mentioned players (wheeler, dee, oldest fultons, mueller, etc.).

Never Ending Coffee Finisher Walt,

I think you're right. I heard the Birkholz had applied, but didn't get in because there was a bit of a backlash at Breck at that time due to so many previously mentioned hockey kids coming in during the previous 2-3 years, leaving a bad taste after several left early. i.e. Paranteau, Mueller, Wheeler.

The doors appear to have reopened last year as they had 10-12 new kids transfer in and another 3-4 this year. I think they will have 10 or 11 sophmores on Varsity this year (5 of whom are returning starters from the first 3 lines) and a couple of very good Freshmen as well. While they will still be young, this should be the deepest Breck team sinces 2005 when they had J. Fulton, Birkholz, Dee, Kettlekamp, Herd, Inderieden, etc... 8)

Agreed. But I still would give the edge to Orono or Blake this year for that very reason. (10-11 Sophmores). The coaching edge obviously goes to Blake as they are the only team with a incumbant coach and a very good one at that in John Hamre. He has to rank right up there in the State with developing kids for Division 1 play.

I agree Orono is probably the team to beat, but no way Blake. After Birk and Barnes they are weaker than a Britney Spears awards show comeback! [-(

That's funny! Orono DOES have some offensive talent. But do they have any D? How about a goalie? You guys are REALLY going to miss TP, as well as Brad Ryan. Good luck. This argument will just have to wait until sections to be settled.

What about?

What about Mound and Richfield? Anyone know about these two teams? Mound should have a pretty good team this year.

Who won between Blake and Orono last year?

Keep talking smack goldy. I think you may have left out a few good players (Doerring, Dressen, Devries, Brunettte, Sievold, McMahon, Johnson) but we will just have to wait and see. Are you the reason Wally left?

Orono won 3-0. Was a good game. They didn't lose to Spring Lake Park.

Agreed. Mound and Orono will make the section a tough one again.

Boy you guys are on a roll. Putting Blake and Breck into the old section 6, means Orono probably won't be back at state for a while.

Did Orono beat Breck last year? When was the last time it happened?

no it was a very good game but breck came out with the victory the youngsters on there team had very good games and orono's goalie didnt play very well.

I heard from sources that Orono was a much better team than Breck last year. Apparently their goalie had a rough day and than the coach pulled him quickly for the backup goalie which did not do any better. Was anyone at this game?

I would say this section is clearly up in the air.

Does anyone know if Richfiled is supposed to be a contender this year?

Richfield

I would not call Richfield one of the favorites, but they sould compete very well with the top teams in 2A. I would compare them to Mound. If they get any solid goaltending at all they could surpries a few teams, like they did last year!

It was a great game. The score ended up close but Breck totally outplayed Orono. A Breck Freshman who grew up playing in Orono with most of their sophmores had a big game and scored a couple of goals and assists.

(Doerring, Dressen, Devries, Brunettte, Sievold, McMahon, Johnson) Sievold is pretty good. The other guys probably are decent, but combined there is no way those seven scored close to as many goals as Breck's 5 Freshmen did, not to mention the older kids like Rehkamp, Weingarden, etc.. Were all these guys even on Varsity last year? Did DeVries, Johnson or McMahon even score a goal?
