Great call.
While Roseau-Warroad may be timeless, several others are noteworthy.
In the 70s - Edina East vs. Edina West
In the 80s - Bloomington Jefferson vs. Bloomington Kennedy
For a while with Hau & Wahlin - Johnson vs. Hill
How about the rivalry that spawned the modern Holiday tournaments? Edina merged and won state in 1982 and 1984. Hill-Murray went undefeated in 1983. Somehow these two schools never met.
Over Christmas break in 1984 (1984-1985 season), Edina's AD at the time (Bud Bjerken) put together the big holiday tournament at Met Center. People saw better fields than the state tournament could provide and came out in droves. Probably 13,000 or more.
In 1985 (1985-86 season), Hill-Murray was up big (about 6-1) after 2 periods when Scott Bloom came to life for Burnsville. He nearly led them back before succumbing by a score of about 7-5. Three months later Burnsville defeated Hill-Murray for their second state title in a row.
For two schools that weren't playing each other, Edina and Hill-Murray was a storyline the AWA would have loved. Public vs. Private. Minneapolis vs. St. Paul. Silly mascot vs. a stupid one.
In the mid-80s the Lake South wasn't just one rivalry, the conference was downright sick. Edina (82, 84, 88 titles), Burnsville (85, 86), Jefferson (won a bunch just after that), Kennedy (won in 87 I think, runners-up before that), Minnetonka (lots of REAL good teams that just didn't quite do it, often bumped out in Sectionals by Edina).
For the old schoolers it was probably Eveleth-Virginia. For a while it was Grand Rapids and Hibbing, then Grand Rapids and Greenway. Mayo-John Marshall. Southwest-Washburn. Anoka-Blaine-Coon Rapids-Elk River. Hastings-SSP. That's the great part about HS sports. There are always some good rivalries.

Blaine and Centennial is a rivalry that seems to have grown over the past couple years. Centennial joined the Northwest Suburban Conference in the 2004-05 season. And now with both schools in the same section (5AA), I see this rivalry growing. I am definatley not comparing this rivalry to the ones lised above, but I think it's one to keep an eye on! It could get intense!

WBL vs Hill is your classic private-public matchup.

that truly is the game everyone wants to see. It would be a huge boost for high school hockey and people would come from all over the state to see it.

East-Cloquet is a bigger rivalry than East-Marshall.

completely agree. cloquet-east is nuts! and more recently rapids is adding a 3rd leg to the triangle of rivalries...but even with that, nothing matches cloquet-east

you're wrong, Marshall vs East would sell out any arena. The attendence would be way more than East vs. CEC. lets take a trip back in time to the last time East played Marshall. Marshall is down by two goals in the third, its not looking too good, until "Phantom" Phil Haney steps on the ice and nets a hat trick in 42 seconds to win the game.

Personally I'd still find East-Cloquet a lot more interesting, but that's just me.

I wouldn't walk across the street to see East lower themselves by playing a class "a" program. East has a fine tradition of playing the best competition and that does not include the likes of Marshall.

Because they would lose? Marshall is not to be taken lightly

Ah BIAFP, It's BSquad level not JV level. Geez.
So what if Marshall is better than East or any other AA school , if that can even be determined.
Get into AA and see what happens against the best during Lent. Then we see. Otherwise, its just a lot of jaw flapping like "yah, but we beat a couple of AA schools in November and December" and other such Class A drivel.
Get through a AA section to play at the Xcel. If Roseau can do it, why cant Marshall?

With the Dano Jacques a/k/a puckman22 and the balance of the Topper squad, this team could certainly challenge for the AA title(although Edina would smoke 'em). As long as pretty boy Flaherty is steering the ship, look for them to continue battling the has beens such as I. Falls, Hibbing, Eveleth, etc for the right to go to the A State Tournament.

Hill vs. WBL - The stands are usually packed by about 4:00 in the afternoon for a 7:30 game. Most of the kids from Hill just walk right over to the game right after school gets out.

You're not kidding with the 2010 in your name...you must be fairly new to this rivalry.
-I know it's one of the biggest in the country, but the only person there at 4:00 in the afternoon is the zamboni driver. I'd say by 7:30 it's packed.
-I'm pretty sure nobody walks from Hill Murray School to Aldrich Arena (over two miles) in usually 10 degree weather, especially when they can just drive in their Lexus' and Beamers.
-The game starts at 8:00.
