BOYS HOCKEY: Late flurry sinks Green Wave
By Tom Miller, Herald Staff Writer
Published Sunday, December 09, 2007

When Roseau called a timeout in the third period, the East Grand Forks Senior High boys hockey team was on the verge of a major upset. The Green Wave trailed defending Minnesota Class AA state champion Roseau by one goal.

It turned out to be a timeout well spent. Less than 30 seconds later, Roseau was on its way to another victory.

Tyler Landman scored three goals including two in a span of 11 seconds after the timeout to lead Roseau to a 4-1 win over Senior High on Saturday in the Civic Center.

"Basically, what I wanted to do was rest our power-play unit," Roseau coach Scott Oliver said of the timeout. "We just made an adjustment from what we saw them doing earlier in the game on the 5-on-3."

Oliver called the timeout when Senior High took a pair of tripping penalties to give Roseau a 5-on-3 at 5 minutes, 31 seconds of the third period.

The Rams, who improved to 3-0, made the most of the opportunity. Landman scored his second goal during the 5-on-3 and then scored 11 seconds later with a one-man advantage.

"We were able to get shots to create some rebounds," Landman said. "Then we turned the rebounds into goals.

"I was just in the right place at the right time. Actually, on all three of my goals that was the case."

Landman's flurry quickly turned Senior High's upset bid sour.

"It came down to giving up three power-play goals," Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. "You can't give a team like Roseau a 5-on-3. And it was the second time we had done it."

Michael Lukkason got the Wave out to a promising start in the third period. Lukkason corralled a turnover at neutral ice and put his own rebound past goalie Mike Lee 58 seconds into the period.

"Five-on-five, the kids really battled hard," Chupka said. "We had our opportunities. But we couldn't finish."

Senior High goalie Alex Christiansen finished with 25 saves, while Lee made 15 stops.

Roseau built a 2-0 lead with a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal in the second period. Landman scored 59 seconds in on a one-timer that sailed over the right shoulder of Christiansen. At 6:02, Adam Knochenmus scored on a 2-on-1 break with Nick Oliver.

"What I'm liking about us right now is we're not giving up a lot," Oliver said. "We're holding teams to about 15 shots and not giving up many odd-man rushes. Our offense will come around. We still have to get in game shape."

Oliver is a good coach. If the idea came from Billy, fine. Oliver is smart enough to know good advice when he gets it.

More importantly, I hope the boys get into "game shape" soon. (Oliver should have had them in "game shape" 2 weeks ago!!! Can you say "down and back?") They'll need to do better than this, if they are going to beat Moorhead. They should be putting up more than 4 goals against these teams!

Oliver gets a lot of good advice during the course of a game. :)

Let's not blame anyone about being in shape. Everyone knows that....how was it said. "Deer Hunting" is the only thing more important than the Rams hitting the ice at the begining of the season.

More than 4 goals???

Maybe 5th....just maybe,

But just maybe TRF and EGF are better than you think.

Roseau is a fine club, but give these teams their due.

I don't mean to disrespect anyone, but with all the firepower that Roseau has, there shouldn't be very many teams that can limit them to 4 or less goals. Perhaps TRF and EGF are just playing great hockey. I know the folks in TRF are really proud of the play of their goaltender...
