As far as Twin Cities sites I would have to say that Mariucci and Aldrich arena offer the best atmospheres. Even though Mariucci is not full, the sound seems to stay in the arena well. A good game at Aldrich always is fun. The Coliseum is a pit. I've been to many a Hill-WBL game and the arena just doesn't have the feel that it should for such a great game. It only has great atmosphere if your team is participating. My guess is BIG and Braemer are great as well but I haven't been there yet for the playoffs.

Up North, the Hibbing Memorial Arena is my favorite. Close to the ice and unbelievable noise level.

As much as I like the Coliseum, it's nice to be up against the glass at a venues like Mariucci and Aldrich.

We can all hope that the Halloween Machine plays the Tornadoes followed by Lumberjacks and Hounds!!!
What a great day of hockey that could be.
Full house at the DECC
That scenario won't happen. It will be East/CEC first, then GR/Anoka.

Anyways, the 1 seed vs. 4/5 winner is the 11:00 AM game. the 2 seed vs. the 3 seed is the 1:00 PM game.
Both GR and CEC need to step up a little or they will both be spectators at the semis.
I don't think the gap between them and Elk River or Flake is big enough to assume anything.
They best take it one game at a time.
Amen to that, GR better dig deep into there Tank!!!

It says on the MSHSL site that the games are at 10 and noon.. does anybody know when these games are for sure? I've heard a couple of different times?

10 and 12 are correct times. Both UMD men's and women's teams play at the DECC Saturday.

goldy....you must not have been at that game in 05 when jm played century. the place was actually packed and i sat on stairs. century's band was there and it was absolutely awesome. however the last two years it has been pretty week. would much rather see the game played in owatonna, much better atmosphere.

Mayo - Century in the Semis last year was packed - both bands were there. Quite an atmosphere, and quite a contrast from the Rec last Saturday when Roseville was in town. Matinee+Metro team+No band+Right before Valentine's dance = No good. But that's off topic.

Everyone has own preferences and bias on best "atmosphere" but here's where I'll be at and I'm certainly looking forward to some great matchups:

Tuesday 26th 2 ea. 4AA semi final games at the Coli
Wednesday 27th 6AA final and 2AA final at Mariucci
Thursday 28th 3AA final at the Coli
Friday 29th 4AA final and 5AA final at the Coli

Looks like a lot of Coliseum in my future.
What a great week it will be!!!!!

I was there in '05, no where near as big a crowd as was there when Century and Austin played, that's the biggest crowd to see a hockey game in Rochester and the most tickets sold since they left the Met Center.

Back when it was a single class tournament they played all the quarterfinals at 1 location and that location rotated around; Burnsville, Austin, Owatonna, Albert Lea, etc. The last year they did this it was in Owatonna and I officiated the third game in a swamp, not only wouldn't the ice set up, but it was melting away. They delayed the last game for about an hour. This was on the heals of the same thing happening in Burnsville the year before. As much as people get on the ice at the Rec Center, it was worse at these other places which is much of the reason they settled at the Rec Center. Owatonna, like most places, is to dependant on the weather being cold outside to help maintain the rink. I'm not a fan of the Rec Center's ice, but there aren't many buildings you can have 4,000 people coming and going and have playable ice through out an entire day, the Rec Center can.

but dont you think with the so minn express in town it will help out? the ice did get better over my last three years playing there. just my opinion.

No, the Xpress don't draw what Owatonna High did in the late '80's. It's not the atmosphere as much as ice quality anyway. The Xpress can play in front of a nice crowd, but that's only 1 game and people come and leave after the game. Sections have people coming and going all day, that's a lot of doors opening, if it's warm out most buildings can't take it, that's why they don't have year around ice. They need to be able to open doors or vents to let outside air in, and that only works if it's below freezing. You have to assume the worst, it's going to be 50 degrees, and hope for the best, 10 degrees. The Rec Center's ice isn't great but it is playable if it's 50 degrees out.

Good point Goldy. I think the temperature won't be the problem at the Rec this Saturday, but the 4 consecutive games might.

I would think for the first round games the Apple Valley/Eastview game at AVHS should be a fun one to be at to get things going. Should be physical and the schools can't stand eachother, should be a great atmosphere there.

No, just people who sit there throwing out blanket assumptions with no basis or knowledge of what they're talking about... much like yourself.

I get along very well with people who are able to get out of their little corner of the world to look at things objectively - it's just that there are very few bored members who seem to do that. Look past your "rivals" and see things for what they are, be honest, be able to take a joke and I'm the nicest guy you'll ever want to meet (well... maybe not  ).
