packerboy wrote: But BIAFP, all the fans saw those teams......lose to Hill Murray. True hockey fans appreciate the teams that play the game with skill AND a physical presence. Dont you agree?
Of course BIAFP does not agree! He's the bored coward! He'd rather we watch the Nordern teams and their ringette style of hockey.

This was the best tourney ever if you only watched the Hill games. All the other games were boring (always are).

What's Slappy doin' on our bandwagon?

The tournament may have been interesting to see live. But watching the broadcast was brutal. Besides the crappy games, the atmosphere was dead and the crowd noise was pathetic.

Was it a little more exciting inside The X?

Benilde/Edina game was raucous, but other than that for both A & AA, pretty quiet... Especially A games, you could hear a pin drop...
Except when STA played, the uniform boys were pretty loud, and I have to admit, kinda funny/brought a smile to my face at times...

Roseau's 8-2 win over Blaine had the crowd buzzing, but when the little Northern teams win big, there is always a buzz in the building... just a fact over the last 35 years, probably be that way forever...

"The Great One" has always had an appreciation for great Catholic hockey players, having been one himself and still a respectable 5th line center on any team.

As far as tournaments go, the list of uninteresting ones is really long.

From 1945 to 1974 , for example.

Since so many great public school players are Catholic, and so many private school players aren't, this gets pretty fuzzy for me. Labels that is...

Here is a label that will provide some clarity regarding my and many others opinion of the so called high school hockey fans whose support of hockey's year end tournament depends on whether their kind of team wins it:

It was extremely exciting in the X. I was yelling so loud the entire AA final I lost my voice. My son and I high fived each other about 20 times.

You know, while I'm glad he's adopted The Pioneers I'm even more happy he likes to see high school hockey. It's unique in a way as we get so much selection of games to watch during the year and so many great matchups that sometimes don't include my squad. He happily sat through a bunch of games at the X 3 days in a row for the Christmas tournament. Now we're left to cheer on the Gophers as Alex Kangas tries to pull a Joe Phillippi in the playoffs and The Wild as they try to make noise in a loaded western conference.

Ya know what...

The worst State HS Hockey Tournament would be better than just about anything else in life :!:

I am the same as all you guys that post here, I love the hockey that the kids play year in year out...

I won't ever lose sight of that! :D

I may have to see to it that this young lad (if he doesn't already) receive some pioneer sportswear to show our appreciation for being "adopted" and for showing the Pioneers love when so many refuse. :-k

What did that make Edina last year?

I wasn't overjoyed with the outcome myself, however, they did muster one more goal than the team that got 2nd this year. :P

Yes, for a few reasons:
1) the officiating was bad. 2 of the guys there are considered below average when they do games here. The MSHSL needs a better way to pick it's officials than who you are and what position you hold in your officials association.
2) The skill level is going down, way down. Kids are much better skaters today than 30 years ago but they can't pass, can't catch a pass, move without the puck, back check, hit the net 3 out of 10 times with a shot, etc. The AA team that played the best team hockey won each game handily.
3) The BSM/Woodbury game was possibly the worst game I've seen in 30+ years. This includes some 1AA teams being beaten by 8 goals.
4) The A hockey side had the 2 best games of the quarterfinals, the AA side was ugly. The best AA QF game was Hill/South, if a 1AA team is in the best AA game of the day we have an issue.
5) the A hockey tournament has become a private school affair, not many have a problem with Hill, BSM, or Cretin playing AA, after all Edina picked up a key transfer too, that levels the playing field. However STA, Marshall, etc have a distinct advantage over most A teams.

On the other hand last years tournament was very very good so that may make this years seem so weak. Also teams like Centennial, Rosemount, and Duluth East were knocked out, letting some other teams get a shot.

I would disagree about the skill going down. We are having more kids drafted out of high school to play in the NHL than ever before. So I guess it depends on how you look at things. Its possible the skill level has gone down all over the world and that makes for more draft picks here, but I don't think that is the case. There are more high end guys who will play pro hockey in Minnesota high schools now than there were long ago...

This years tournament was "doomed" from the start because of the top heavy nature of the field.

The top 4 seeds were obvious and once the seeding was done, you werent going to have an entertaining Thursday.

But so what? We had 4 of the best 5 teams in the state on Friday night and 2 of the best on Sat. night.

I dont need a game to go into OT for it to be entertaining. I thought watching the way the top teams play the game was very entertaining.

The HM / Edina game was a highly contested game and much closer than the score. Just watching the way HM played was very entertainong and I say that even if they werent Catholic , maybe.
