From an article in the Mankato Free Press talking about the current coach who took over the baseball team in New Ulm: "taking over for coaching legend Jim Senske who retired in 2004 after 39 yrs. with 707wins , the most wins in the history of Minnesota baseball ", including a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in class AAA (large schools) :?: :!:
Black Ice, I have no idea what this "puuck" kid is talking about...
New Ulm is a dynasty in HS Baseball. I played against Terry Steinback & crew in '79 & '80, best team we ever played during my HS days...
Anyway... Back to hockey...
I think you hit on a key point about Southern Mn (SMN) hockey. There are some great athletes playing hockey on SMN teams, but do they get a majority of the best HS athletes to play hockey, I don't think they do today. Tradition. In Southern MN, winter sports such as Basketball & Wrestling are king...
Until Southern MN hockey can capture the majority of each school's best athletes, Depth will always be what will hold them back when they get to the State tournament. Yes, once in a while, a team or two from the South will put together some sophmores, juniors and senior leadership to make a run, but that will not happen consistently until they develop more talent depth, year in year out...

I can only speak for Section 1.

Bruggeman 1 goal against
Arentz 4 goals against
section 1A doesnt have depth like the metro teams because they cant transfer to another school that is 10 min away. Southern teams are usualy all home grown not to many transfers like the metro teams.

Another assessment from watching the entire weekend:

Goalies:
Casper
Fons

Defense:
Red:
Lapic - get a bungy cord - he forgot he was defense - good tryout

White:
Schmidt - glimpses of real player emerged - still looks hurt
Johnson - strong defensive player that makes good choices

Blue:
Leddy - best defense at camp, different than the rest, hands down
Alt - strong player and tryout
Montgomery - good decisions, strong tryout

Forwards:
Red:
Budish - horrible second game - still top 5 player at 54's
Birkholtz - good skills - one way player (his way)-work on this
Kohls - disappears from time to time but when he goes, he's good

White:
Persian - best white forward - consistent opportunities / playmaking
Walters - you have more - played one good period all wkd-against 16's
Voight - good tryout - strong team player with good vision

Blue:
Pitlick - missed second game and his team won big - not his best effort
Oliver - strong player not much more to say - maybe best for tryout
Rehkamp - solid tryout - strong player especially on offense
Skoog - strong tryout - well deserved to go to national camp

Other to watch:
Maetche - workhorse player with great speed, above ave. skill
Reilly - hard worker, good playmaker, good vision, limited with size...
Hennum - visible on the ice from time to time
Gaarder - unfortunately - did little without Budish-type around him

Surprisingly hard to notice during the tryout:
Zepeda
Friedman
Lovick

How can you give props to Casper. Probably gave up as many goals as anybody on the weekend, including several softies. I saw the kid hanging his head when they played Blue.

The goalie that should get consideration is Bruggeman. Had the best numbers from the winter of the six goalies coming into the festival, gave up 1 goal the first weekend, (least of any goalie and gave up the least amount during the second weekend which I believe was 3). Not a flashy goalie but stops the puck which from what i hear is what the goalie is supposed to do.

Lapic and D do not equate. Not a chance he will move to the next level as a D. If he moves forward it will be as a forward.

Leddy may be the top player in his class. Ala the invite to Ann Arbor.

Agree with you on Leddy. I thought he was the best player on the ice the whole weekend

I did'nt see Hotchkins name mentioned, did he not have a very good weekend, and also I would'nt count out the range kids, not because of how good they are, but because of the evaluators that are there, they made it through the first weekend section tourny. Would'nt surprise me.

Hotchkins a good player, What I noticed after watching him is he hardly ever gives up the puck. But that may be the nature of the beast at these events since the emphasis seems to be "all about me"

Hotchkins will be on the team. End of speculation. And actually he isn't a "all about me" kid at all.

I thought Pitlick would have made the National List. After all, he was a tryout invitee to Ann Arbor two seasons ago and I believe he had a good 07 - 08 high school hockey season for Centennial.

Did he have a weak tryout?
