I agree with Puckranger.
In this day and age of instant gratification, the pressure to win every year is out of hand. You see it at every level in every sport.
We need a little patience to work through the inevitable lean times.
Unfortunately, patience is almost extinct in our society today.

Might want to go back and look at when the last time Greenway beat Grand Rapids? I think it is pushing maybe 8-9 years.[/quote]
I couldn't get how far back Greenway's onslaught on Grand Rapids lasted, and I don't want to throw any numbers I cannot back up, but I think you should do the same. Friday, January 30, 2004 Greenway 4, Grand Rapids 2. So really your 8-9 is more like 4-5, which is half of what you "thought". but I'm not saying thats good, I'm just saying its not as bad as you put it. Admittedly, at the rate the programs going it might climb up there. Puckranger, I 100% agree, I have been saying that for the last two years. The players would blame the coaches for their bad play and not themselves, and once a player starts blaming other people the need to improve themselves is gone.

Well we will find out Thursday, but the Raiders definitely are gonna be fighting an uphill battle, regardless of it being at the snake pit. Too bad Greenway couldn't save their big upset for rapids

You never know, it is always tough to play in the pit so there might be an upset brewing???

Greenway is playing better. Once again, they gave Virginia problems. Virginia seems to have a difficult time playing Greenway no matter how much better they are than Greenway. Maybe Greenway is starting to adapt to Anton as coach and therefore playing better hockey. Hopefully they will give Rapids a game.

I think before Rapids had this run, that Greenway had swept Rapids from 1996-2000. December 2001 it came to an end when Matti Korhonen was the goalie and freshmen forward Mark Columbus fed senior Brain Wickstrom in OT for the win. That was one of the greatest games I've ever attended. Greenway had Guyer, Sertich, and that kid that transfered from Two Harbors that was really good. Greenway was also ranked #1 in the state at that time.

Rumor has it that Greenway will not be playing Grand Rapids anymore.
They will be playing with them, if they can make the team.

Rumor is that if the Greenway school can't get out of the red, the state will close 'em up and break it up - Grand Rapids and I suppose Nashwauk to the north.
I hope it is just a rumor.

There has been meetings with mergining the Administration of Greenway and Nashwauk... They would be run under one Superintendent and School Board but still keep both schools open, so that would mean that the sports like football, baseball, etc etc will be merged as well, and I'm thinking if they go through with that then the sports where Rapids and Greenway have merged than it will be Grand Rapids/Greenway/Nashwauk, but I havent gotten information on that

And also, yea I remember that as well, It was a great game (even though my team lost) and its Corey Carlson you're thinking of, but I could only got as far back as 96 so i dunno what happened in the 95 and beyond years.

I have a hard time saying they are playing better as a team. Aranason is playing great, and that is keeping them in some games. Virginia dominated that game last night. Arnason stopped 43 shots and it could have very easily been a 8-2 or 9-2 type score. They still need a lot of work defensively and need more players to contribute offensively other than Mendoza, Estey, Orhn, and Hynek. The rest of the team has a grand total of three goals.

If the goalie is playing better then the team is playing better. I know Greenway is not even in the top half of A schools, but when the goalie starts playing better that usually starts to translate into more confidence for the whole team.

Agreed, it makes it easier to think offense if you have a goalie in the net that you can rely on and with Arnason playing as good as he is now as a Freshman, if Greenway can hold it together for a few years, we will see a great improvement in the team over those years.

Also a win over the Falls, a win over Two Harbors, and a one goal loss to Virginia is much better than what was happening before. Earlier in the season, Falls and Virginia would have put Greenway into running time and they would have found a way to lose to Two Harbors. Their game with Duluth Central will be a good indication if they are improving or whether those three games were the exception.

In the last few years Virginia has probably become Greenway's second biggest rivalry next to Rapids. Even the year Greenway only won two games I believe they played Virginia pretty close although I'm not for positive. I think they split their two games two years ago, and after the screw job with the referees last year in the playoffs, I don't think Greenway is very fond of Virginia right now.

Greenways always hasnt been very fond of Virginia, but its true that they probably have jumped up ahead of Hibbing. Plus you are correct it did go into overtime in 2006 (1-2), in 2007 they did split games after Greenway scored 5 in a row to make it 5-1 but Virginia did make it a 5-4 game, and in 2008... Don't get me started on that playoff game.

I'm not sure what it is, but it seems that Greenway goaltending shows up to play against Virginia. If you look at the past few years when Virginia has had the superior team (Not including last year as Greenway was very competetive last season). Greenway goalies have a 93% saves percentage and have stopped at least 31 shots in every game, and they were all one goal games, including a win and an overtime loss.
1-18-2005: Zac Preble stopped 45 in a 3-2 loss
1-24-2006: Tom James stopped 37 in a 2-1 overtime loss
1-23-2007: A.J. Underwood stopped 31 in a 5-4 win
1-28-2009: Erikur Arnason stopped 43 in a 3-2 loss
The odd thing is, that last year when the teams were more equal and the games were more even - the shot totals were even close - but the goaltending wasn't as good (85% saves percentage) and Virginia won all three by more than one goal. Go figure.

Heard that Greenway will finally have a bantam team again. I think its been three years since the last bantam team. They will have JV team too. With the inevitable merger with N-K, I don't see Greenway merging with Rapids for hockey. The numbers at the younger levels are decent and a concerted effort to get Nashwauk and Keewatin to buy into hockey would only improve hockey at Greenway. Greenway's and N-K's track teams are combining this spring. The details of the merger are far from worked out. But the geographcial area would make one high school impractical. If that were the case, the location would be a bloodbath. If located in Nashwauk, half of the Greenway school district would open enroll at Rapids. If located in Coleraine, most of N-K would opt for Hibbing. Heard Greenway is only graduating 75 students this year, less than 50% of what it was in the good ol' days.

Well hopefully Greenway stays with the Hockey Program. Like I said before it would be a sad day if Rapids and Greenway combined. They both have just to much tradition to combine. If it is money I will help donate $$$$ so that this doesnt happen.
