Even if Cloquet makes it past GR or ER, they'll never beat East. Too many horses in the East squad - 4 different players scored - just not enough in the Cloquet squad.
It is what it is.
The way it's looking right now, there's a good chance Cloquet will get the #8 seed. Assuming they win their play-in game, they'll face East in the quarterfinals.
Here's a good one; the team home schedules at the Heritage website shows East playing their quarterfinal game there on 2/24. If their opponent happens to be Cloquet, would the place sell out?

In my opinion the only team in the section that could pull off the huge upset over East is Cloquet, and that happening would be a miracle and fueled solely on the intensity of the rivalry. As a Cloquet fan this is the first year I want East to succeed and if Cloquet doesn't go to state Im rooting for the Duluth East Greyhounds to win State! Its time for 7AA to bring the blue medals home for the first time since 1998. (That is of course unless Cloquet doesn't go which I hope they can pull it off

As referring to the 99'-00' team being the last team to run the table in 7AA; it was also the year before Cloquet beat East for the first time in 7 years dating back to 93'-94' (not sure if this year is correct?) in 00'-01'. I want to know what East's record against Cloquet from 00'-01' to 08'-09' (now) is? And what East's record against the rest of 7AA from 00'-01' to 08'-09' is?... If im not mistaken a lot of those years East's only section 7AA loss/es were to C-E-C. It's just a point to make, how well Esse has done against East.
Also, I have heard from multiple sources that Forbort and Esse are related?? Is this true? And if so does anyone out there know how their relationship is with each other??[/b]
Since Cloquet started being competitive with East in 00-01, the series record stands at 13-9-2 Cloquet. The vast majority of these games have been incredibly close; maybe I'll look up the scores when I have time later. I'm not the person to ask about before then, though.
Since 2001, East has been either the 1 or 2 seed in 7AA every year, and all but one of the 2-seeds were years when Cloquet was #1 (the exception is Greenway, 2001). I know East lost to ER in 05-06, but that's been the only in-section loss not to Cloquet over the past five years. I wouldn't suspect there are many, if any, more going back to 01.
I'm not a huge Esse fan, but I give him serious credit for getting his team to always show up against East, no matter what the talent gap might be. How long has he been at Cloquet?
As for running into Cloquet in sections, I'd still prefer that. I realize it's a far more dangerous first round matchup than anyone else, but if East is ever going to get over this little "Cloquet complex" that seems to be building up, they need to beat them in the playoffs. I'd like to see East earn their trip to state and prove they can exorcise all those old demons.

I wonder how long beforehand people would be lining up outside the Heritage Center? That could be quite the game.
And I'm definitely very, very interested in seeing how Elk River does against Centennial tonight. Things never end up being quite as easy as they originally looked...

My guess is if it was against cloquet it will be at the DECC. I thought they all were though.

Well, they have the Heritage Center listed on the schedule for the Section Quarterfinals. But, I would expect them to move the game to the DECC if it is CEC vs East.

I think the Heritage would work. In 1999, problems with the DECC (I think they had some Sports Show or Womens Expo or some such absurdity) scheduled and East played Cloquet in the 7AA quarterfinal game up at the CARC. I checked and Rinkfinder shows the CARC having a capacity of 1,300; I wonder about this because Heritage has a 1,500 capacity. CARC looks bigger but they also don't have bleachers at either end like Heritage does so maybe my eyes are deceiving me there.
Can you imagine the atmosphere for an East-Cloquet playoff game here at Heritage??

I think after Elk River's 4-2 win over Centennial tonight, those concerns are 100% legitimate.
ER's last 10 (Since losing to East): 8-1-1 record, wins over Blaine, Andover, Centennial, tie w/Maple Grove, close loss to AHA.
Looking back on their entire season, they've had a shot at winning every game they've played. In fact, most of their losses are two goal losses - many with empty netters. I think this is a top-ten caliber team right now.

i think cloquet's capacity is around 2500. I would like to see a cloquet east game at the heritage where you have bleachers all the way around with the exception of behind the benches. It also seemed that there was a lot less people at wednesdays game compared to the last couple years. this probably due to cloquet being down this year.

I think they could pull off an East/CEC game at the Heritage. Alot of the crowd for the semis at the DECC are other teams fans at the game before or after. It would be packed, but the atmosphere would be much better. They would definitely be going 3 or 4 deep along the SRO rails.

East lost to CEC in 05-06, I believe by the score of 1-0. The next year East lost to Grand Rapids 5-4 in OT. Both games in the semis.

You think I'd forgotten? I remember each of those in vivid, painful detail.
As for the comment on Marshall, even if Marshall does ever make the jump, it'd probably take a while for it to build up the importance of East-Cloquet. There's way too much history there.
